I learned that the term "sawbones" will not survive into our future, greatly complicating the distribution of nicknames.

Yes, the complete misunderstanding of the origin of that nickname really irritated me.

I thought the name came from his favorite show "Bones" on FOX.   Huh, shows what I know.
And I thought it was because Kirk could get recreational Viagra under the table from McCoy....

Dear sir, you disgust me.   Turn in your library card immediately.

Also learned that even though Vulcan was a centuries old civilization and they not only had weapons in the original timeline before Nero shows up and kills Kirk's father - even to the point of arming Old Spock's science vessel for what was believed to be a peaceful mission - all of that is somehow changed and Vulcan doesn't have so much as a pea shooter with which to defend their planet.

I doubt it was a misundertanding as much as the term being outdated now, let alone many years in the future.

Kirk had antiquarian interests, though (see: Trek 2, 4; in Spectre of the Gun he knew all about the OK Corral, names which I don't even know outside that episode).
Yeah, so did Calgon.

Yes, but that was the Old Kirk who grew up in the timeline with his Dad still alive. In that timeline, Kirk's middle name Tiberius wasn't chosen because it was his grandfather's name - Nero's showing up somehow went back and changed that too - but because Dad was also a maven about ancient history and though highly of that Emperor.

This Kirk's interest in history probably doesn't go any deeper than the interest in old cars and how do destroy them.

Doctor Who?

#131
I have watched every episode of the old show and don't remember Kirk's middle name or how he got it even coming up.  Also if you are going to complain about that and give it as a reason for the movie being bad maybe i should point out that Kirk was James R.Kirk in one episode and it was changed with out reason at some point.

Doctor Who?

No I am talking about people who go after this movie and act like it is the worst thing under the sun because they didn't give the "Right" reason for Kirk's middle name and then act like the old show was perfect and there were no mistakes in it.  Sorry but I am a fan but even i can see that 90% of all Star Trek is dated a mistake riddled.

Doctor Who?

We need to just have a no sarcasm rule on this forum because it always leads to something like this.  What i was trying to say was that if the new Star trek movie is so flawed that it shouldn't exist or be enjoyed then old Star Trek shouldn't either because it is just as flawed.  Look at James R.Kirk for one thing.  That change was never addressed on screen.  Also the Kirk we met in the old show was 35 how do we know that his interest in old stuff didn't start some time between 25 and 35?

Doctor Who?

I'm fine with her not liking the movie it's just that she can't seem to go three posts between some sort of rant about it and she seems to think that if she keeps bringing up manor things that only someone who owns tons of Star Trek books cares about would notice those of us who like it will decide it was a bad movie. It's been almost a year since the movie came out and the hate is getting a little old.  It's getting near Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings levels.
