I'm just pointing out what I (and others, it seems) see as the fallacy behind your logic so that people can take that into account as they read your posts.  "Consider the source", so to speak
You know, not naming the specific fallacy is in itself, a fallacy(A  red herring I believe it's called). Secondly, I have read what you have all said, and I just still don't buy it. I point out something it seems like everyone comes up with some convenient excuse. I have a right to say what I say without being scrutinized just because my opinion isn't popular, and let's face facts... why isn't anybody taking my side at all? Politics. Aliens is popular (God only knows why because I don't understand the appeal), and people will defend it to the death, so to speak even if I come up with what I see as plot holes. Seriously, Bishop is a super-advanced android and he didn't notice the 20 foot alien or hear it at all??? And Ripley even with her constant nightmares and recurring paranoia didn't notice it either??? In my opinion, there is just NO way around that. No way at all. Why can't you so much as say you understand my point of view? I've tried to understand yours only to find it just doesn't work. You have got to admit there is room for compromise.

You hurt your arguments pretty bad with the "show it" line...

So now it's the not noticing it up in the well....  There is a point there, in the scene of them walking under the drop ship it does seem like the drop ship is way higher than we ever saw it before.   Seems like the landing gear was extended in that scene just to put the alien up higher so they wouldn't notice it.

A dark alien up high in a dark recess in a dimly lit landing bay, and people walking and talking to each other underneath....  Not a huge plot hole that they didn't look up.  I would have, but most people don't, I'm always the one pointing out interesting stuff up high to people, most people walk around with tunnel vision.  If the ship had been lower, like all the other times it was shown, I think it would have been hard to slip the surprise in there.

I'd say the plot hole is that they didn't smell it (at least Ripley should have, don't know what kind of smelling Bishop could do).  It was injured, dripping acidic blood, the landing skid should have been chewed up from the acid and the area should have smelled pretty bad....   But I guess that could be explained away by Bishop not being designed with smelling ability and Ripley had just spent a lot of time using a flame thrower to toast a bunch of aliens, that probably overloaded her nose a bit.....

No science fiction movie passes all tests, some stuff always has to be overlooked to maintain the feel of the movie, in this case they wanted a surprise, and obviously they wanted the battle with Ripley in the lifter vs the queen, so some artistic licence was used in how the queen gets into the landing bay.

Back to Avatar, maybe I'll see it next week.

I strongly disagree Marty, mostly because James Cameron saw fit to show us every other damn thing and every little angstrom of the trip up, and back down. Therefore, my request that he "show it" is not without its merits.

Wow, if that's not flame bait, I don't know what is!

Doctor Who?

So just because Janet Leigh was shown getting into the shower and tearing up the note means that Hitchcock was a bad director for not showing us Perkins dressing up as mother.  It's called setting mood.  Cameran made everyone think the movie was winding down and then BAM! you have the shock of the queen killing Bishop.

Tripe

Wow.  ???

Um....we weren't supposed to be afraid of the Marines.  Therefore, we want to see that.  Showing all of that 1) heightens the tension 2) shows us how well these people are trained and armed so that when they meet the aliens we feel like they have a chance and 3) knowing how well they were prepared highlights how deadly the aliens are when they kick their asses later.

So were Lucas and Kershner guilty of showing us "every other damn thing and every little angstrom of" the Rebels preparations before the Empire attacked them on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, too?

No...that's someone saying what everyone else is thinking.

About the "Aliens plot-hole" - while I think you could probably make a case that it's not explained anywhere or that it seems unlikely, I think there are two things to consider:

1.  The reason it's not shown is because it would deflate both the triumph of getting off the planet and the shock value of Queen reveal.  There are certain moments where it is wiser to show than tell, but clearly not in this case.  Why it's not explained afterwards? There's really no need to pad out the ending with tying up irrelevant loose ends.

2.  To paraphrase a famous saying, "repeat to yourself, it's just a film and you really should relax."

Doctor Who?

Every Jame Bond movie suck because they don't SHOW us everything that happens.  I hope the next jame Bond movie starts with him getting up in the morning, getting ready for work, driving to work in real time, and ends just as he enters his office in MI6

You know it has taken a while but i think we have finally found our new Isaac.

Didn't one of the mods suggest calling someone Isaac should be a ban-able offense?

Aliens is my third favourite Alien movie (waaaaaaaaaaaaaay after Alien and slightly after Alien 3) and I don't agree with you either.

Just saw this, loved it.  During production I was thinking this would have an issue similar to 'Chinese Democracy' where people would be so caught up in the cost and time they couldn't see past it however anyone watching Avatar thinking "is that it" needs to re-examine themselves.  Sure it's overlong, clunky at times and self-indulgent but it's a James Cameron movie so I expect those things.  I'll definately be seeing this again on the big screen because I know watching it at home will lose a LOT of the impact.

Did you see it in 2d or 3d?

Yeah, dammit...how dare Goldfinger start with him just arriving at the drug lord's compound....  They should have show us everything starting with Bond taking scuba diving lessons...
