Doctor Who?

Also wouldn't they run out of cities or at least run into someone who had known they as high school students 20 years ago after a while?

But why?

It makes no sense, I mean why do they just pretend to be youthful looking twentysomethings? Or are they all just paedophiles?
And Emmanuel Lewis has looked like a third grader for decades....he hasn't been going to elementary school all of that time.  If you can fake the paperwork to get into school, you can fake that you've graduated already.

I think it's just a convenient plot device, guys. Edward has to meet the angsty teenaged girl or there's no story, so it has to take place in High School where all teenage drama occurs. This is one of the many faults of Meyer's writing, IMO. Convenient plot device or not, good writers can often mask it well enough that you almost don't notice it or, failing that, good writers can find better ways of explaining it or ridiculing it themselves in the narrative. Meyer? You can drive semi-trucks through the logic holes and she never even bothers to explain anything. Sloppy.

Logically, these vampires could go to college for a several years at least without anyone being suspicious. So why are they sticking with High School?

Because that's where her emotional development stopped?

That's not actually just a slam, though obviously it is at least in part, but something I've noticed with bad writers (especially in the bastion of all bad writing - fan fiction).

Bad writers can't truly become separated from their characters (which is why much fan fiction is written in the first person), the emotions and motivations of the bad writer are identical to the motivations and emotions of the characters themselves.

Like I said.  Hack writing.

Quote from: Doctor Who? on September 17, 2009, 03:06:29 PMCan we have a law that just out and out bans Tween and Teenage girls from buying books or going to the movies?  Sure that may seem harsh but think of all the pain we would avoid.

I know you're joking, so I'll abstain from mocking you for this statement.

Mocking is more fun

Here's something I've wondered:  did bad fanfiction exist prior to the internet?  Like, were people writing Simon & Simon fanfiction in the 80's?

Tripe

Oh yes, slash fiction was originally published in fanzines and the like. Not sure if there is any pre-net Simon and Simon stuff but you never know...

Don't usually like to quote Wiki but...

"The first science fiction fanzine, The Comet, was published in 1930 by the Science Correspondence Club in Chicago. The term "fanzine" was coined in October 1940 by Russ Chauvenet. "Fanzines" were distinguished from "prozines", that is, all professional magazines. Prior to that, the fan publications were known as "fanmags" or "letterzines."

Ever heard of "Filk" - folk songs written based on different sci-fi shows and books? Not parody songs. Stuff like those titles Kirk mentions in Star Trek V - "Moons Over Rygel VII".   I mean some people would sell their stuff on cassette and be listed as guest/performers at sci-fi conventions.

That's fascinating.  Does this mean there could be Maude fanfiction?

Sure.  One of my mom's friends passed around Star Trek fan fiction back in the 80's.  It was called "Dave Trek", and featured the author and his friends (my mom among them).  He passed around hard copies printed out and bound at Kinkos.

It's nice that the internet gave these people a home to share their...um...mostly crappy works of fiction with the world.

I guess there's a fanfiction saying "If there's a franchise there's going to be fanfiction for it." I'd searched up Love Boat fanfiction and 'lo there are fan written stories out there for the show even though it preceded the internet. I guess the scariest type of fanfiction would be the X-Rated porn fiction, of Twilight there is probably a vast amount out there. Scarily enough you can find porn for even characters who are not organic, like the Transformers, the 80's Transformers.
Being a genocidal maniac is not one of my turn ons.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

A buddy of mine wrote a Digimon porn-fic on a dare, about 8 years ago.  It's burned in my brain forever.  I could probably find it if you're curious.
