San Francisco...NOT

I have lived in Frisco since the late eighties (and yes, some people here are starting to call it that again, but I always did anyway) and I find it hilarious that when you get to the end of The Room you find in the credits that it wasn't even filmed here at all!

Not that I couldn't tell beforehand. It  would be obvious to anyone who's spent any time living here at all that the apartment building would have to be located on Alcatraz to have that view of the skyline at that particular distance, so the scenes from the roof are backgrounded with stock footage or a scrim screen or something. Sheesh, couldn't Wiseau have even afforded to shoot on location in the City if he was going to throw in all those establishing shots?

And someone mentions someone having ended up in a hospital on Guerrero - of which there is no such thing.  ::)

Merry;

Try retracing Johnny's route home and see if you can figure out where the hell he's supposed to live (and work). As far as I can tell, he works in the Financial District (if he works for a bank), but comes home (presumably to someplace west of Van Ness) via Embarcadero Center, Grace Cathedral, and the Richmond District (assuming that the flower shop was on the way home from work). All of which is close to a cable car line.

Damn, I just KNOW there is a pub crawl drinking game in there somewhere.

I certainly realized the rooftop scene was not in San Francisco, the green screen work on that was awful! Almost as bad as in Feast 2. Apparently he loved the city as much as he loved Lisa. And the city loves him as much as Lisa loves him.

Well, someone on imdb.com says they did some research - looking at street signs in the film.  That they found and visited the flower shop (ex - it's a coffee shop) and the coffee shop (ex - it's a pizza place)....

Now that the interiors weren't shot in SF - god knows that's happened before and since. Doubt very much that Ironside or Streets of San Francisco were shot there when LA is so close.

wait, wait, wait... so you mean movies are sometimes not filmed in the place where they are set? that's blasphemous!

That doesn't bother me, but what does is the thing that The Room seems to do, and a lot of movies seem to do, where the characters are supposed to go on a five-minute drive from A to B, but anyone who even modestly knows the city where the movie is set can tell that they passed locations which mean they would have had to have driven back and forth across town about fifteen times to have been all the places they were. You know - movies where characters drive from Yankee Stadium to the George Washington Bridge via the Empire State Building, Coney Island, and Flushing Meadows Park, or from STL to downtown via St. Charles, Alton, and the Poplar St. Bridge.

Though egregious instances of this probably deserve their own topic...

Ha ha.  People who've never been here seem to think we have cable cars all over the place.  When in fact there are only 2 lines that I know of, the Powell line and the California Street line.  And no one uses them but tourists because they cost twice what the MUNI costs.

That and the lines are ridiculous.

He loved the City the way Lisa wished he'd be loving her: from a far distance.

It sounds like he knows the city about as much as he knows about acting. And directing. And writing.

Still amazed they're around when you consider what frivolous lawsuits did to British buses....

Streets of San Francisco was definitely filmed here.  But I invented a good drinking (or toking) game: watch Streets with some friends (it really only works with other people who live here or used to) and drink or do a hit every time there's a police call/dialogue line that mentions an impossible intersection or an address that could not exist.

My favorite was the one where they had a chase through the unfinished construction site of a new-fangled thingy called a BART Station.

I used to see things on "Miami Vice" like Crockett standing in front of an art deco hotel on Miami Beach and supposedly having a face to face conversation with Tubbs who was shown standing in front of the Opa Locka City Hall.....which are 15 miles apart.

And my mother used to tell me that on "Barney Miller" everything happened on streets with numbers higher than existed in Manhattan.

It happens.
