Yeah, I was watching Hammer horror with my uncles when I was about 6 which lead to me being the only 8 year old to dress up and Freddy Kruger for dress up day... school councellers where called  ;D

When I try to decide if I should let my kids watch something based on violence/language/innuendos/gore I compare it to what I watched as a kid.  With how strict my parents were, I still watched a wide array of movies, and I think I'm somewhat well adjusted as a grown up.  I always think about Raiders.  There is a lot of gore in that movie, especially at the end, but I watched it all the time.  So I usually let my kids go to about the Indiana Jones point, but no further.  Based on that, I'm typically okay with stuff like X-Men or Lord of the Rings, but I still have to cover their eyes at a couple parts.  I did feel bad after taking my oldest to see Blades of Glory.  Since then, I'm a little more strict with the language/innuendos.

People don't care about the quality of adult films either.

um... wait... I mean.... adult movies... um.... er... mature cinema... uh.... grown-up pictures...

So why would the arena of children's entertainment be different?

Childrens movies are more reliable cash cows for the studios, so they can hire whatever hack will do the producer's bidding.

My mother only really forbade one film until all of my siblings reached a certain age (12 maybe, I forget) and that was Jaws, I'm still not sure why, especially since I'd been reading the unexpurgated Grimm Brothers from about 6 or 7.

It was a little like her thing about not allowing us coffee I t5hink; when I finally did drink the stuff it wasn't anything special and I still can't tell the difference between qualities of the slightly burnt tasting fluid.

Me too.

I rarely watched Tv with my friends when I was a kid because they were all into Ninja Turtles,Power Rangers, and Pokemon.  I liked Hitchcock,John Wayne and Roy Rogers Westerns,Star Trek,Sherlock Holmes, and Jeeves and Wooster when i was a kid.

Don't get me wrong there was some kids stuff I liked(Mostly comic books and Reboot)but I never had time for the popular stuff because for as long as I can remember I found it kind of dumb.  Kids can tell good from bad.

You sound just like me. I too loved Jeeves and Wooster and other british comedies, and other kids my age didn't get it, and couldn't even understand british accents. Philistines! I did like some good kids shows like "Doug", but my favorite show as a kid was "Mary Tyler Moore" (still is). And my favorite movie as a kid was "The King and I".

And the thing with showing Hitch to kids is it's up to the parents to teach them "this isn't good behavior". I must have had good parents because I saw Vertigo at 4 and I've never done anything morally wrong or illegal. Heck, I don't even drink or cuss.

So, yeah, kids can tell the difference between good and bad movies and TV. Kids are smarter than people expect. We don't need to talk down to kids, like Barney, we can treat them like rational beings, like Mr Rogers.

Doctor Who?

Yeah Mr.Rogers was great.  Of all the kids shows on PBS he was always my favorite.  As I kid I never felt like a was being talked down to when I watch him. One thing I think I should point out is when i did watch adult things like Hitchcock or Red Dwarf when I was a kid I was never watching them alone I was always watching them with my parents and they would always make sure i knew not to do or repeat anything bad in them.  The King and I is one of the few musicals I can stand.  I remember Doug being a good show too,I didn't watch it much because my parents strictly controlled how much tv I watched a day and most Saturdays I used up all my TV watching time on The Bugs Bunny and Tweety show, and Reboot.  Also my friends didn't get me when I was a kid because I would choose to watch stuff like Ken Burn's Civil War and Newton's Apple?  Anyone else remember that show?  People would write with science questions and they would answer them.  It doesn't sound like much but it was great when they would show you stuff like how pilots learned to fly.

don't remember Newton's Apple, but I did watch Bill Nye the Science Guy.  I loved the Bugs and Tweety show! We had it so good as kids--classic looney tunes in syndication! that was also back when the Disney channel was more like TCM, showing making-of shows and classic cartoons like the old Jiminy Cricket "I'm no fool" cartoons and "the old mill". Plus we had good shows like Animaniacs. Those were the days.

And I too watched all those grown up type movies with adult supervision, and my tv watching was monitored.

There were only four channels when I was growing up (well three until I was seven).

I did watch Johnny Ball doing all the science shows though. :)

Oh yeah i remember Bill Nye! He was great.  Why does it seem like the four stations we had when we were kids had more verity then the 300 stations we have now?

I think a better question is: Why is it that when an actor says they took a movie role for their kids, it always proves that they hate their kids?

Doctor Who?

You see actors instead of grounding their kids when they do something wrong just make a really bad movie that their kids will have to pretend they like.  Got to do something to keep the kids inline.

Maybe it more a long term thing. Instead of abusing their child physically to scar them for life, they appear in a bad movie so their kids will always have that nostalgic association.

I wish I had the source, but I'm pretty sure I once read that Sylvester Stallone sometimes punishes his kids by making them watch Stop or My Mom Will Shoot!

All this talk about kids being in to quality programming came to my mind yesterday when I found out that my 6 (nearly 7) year old nephew Wade recently became a fan of Monk.  He put some of the Monk DVDs in his Netflix queue and was watching one at my parents' house yesterday.

He'll probably be enthused when he finds out I have all 7 seasons on DVD

Parents take their children to see all this crap because it's the $6.00 babysitter. They get quiet kids, peace of mind and "family bonding" all in one neat little package!

I made up my mind long ago that when I have children I will teach them to respect the art of film; to appreciate the quality when it's there. That doesn't mean that they can never see any fun movies, but movies can still be fun without executives trying to appeal to my children through fart noises and booger jokes.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!
