One thing that wasn't quite as good as I was hoping was Michael Giacchino's main theme.  He's capable of much more.  Do yourself a favor and look up the main theme to Secret Weapons Over Normandy.  Contrast it to the theme to this movie.  SWON's theme is hummable and memorable.  Star Trek's... isn't.

I don't even remember a musical theme other than the jazzed up version of the TOS one....

And I'm a soundtrack maven.

It played during the title screen after the initial action.

I liked the main theme a lot. I thought it was really sturdy, and, like the movie, good at communicating a certain familiarity I felt as a Star Trek fan, without being a re-hash of something that had been done before.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.
Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

Count me disappointed also with Giacchino's score, though that was likely because I was expecting a lot.  Giacchino has a great facility for writing music in the style of other music:  his score for the WWII computer game Medal of Honor, his Bond-inflected cuts for the villain's lair in The Incredibles, his "Roar" from Cloverfield that was basically a parallel-universe Toho Godzilla theme.  Nuggets of true slack-jawed awesomeness.  At the least, they made you say "This guy gets it."

So I was expecting something for this movie that would successfully evoke the original Star Trek, while being good music in its own right.  But it didn't evoke, and his main theme had basically vanished from my mind by the next morning.  It wasn't a bad score, but it didn't hit the high mark I set for it.

And the re-orchestration of the original Star Trek theme was also just a little off.  It diminished the high marks he got for triggering all the nostalgia neurons in our brains right at the end.

And I think I'm done talking about the movie.  For now.

I'm not a movie soundtrack nerd, so I don't usually notice the orchestra music.
Before reading any of these comments I had already decided that for some reason I really, really liked the theme music.
I personally love that it doesn't SOUND like every other Star Trek movie.
There's something about it that just clicks nicely for me.

I like this track especially:

I didn't pay enough attention to the score, but I did really like the song in the bar toward the beginning.

Long time no post! I will give you my take on this movie, though -- I loved it. It was cast perfectly and they kind of opened up the possibility of doing multiple sequels with whatever stories they wish. I didn't mind the soundtrack for the film... what I did sort of mind was the constant lens flare that seemed to be attacking me in every single scene.

Whoa... welcome back J-Proof!

Yeah, i mentioned the shaky-cam and the lens flares to my friends, but no one else seemed to notice. Of course, they like to make fun of me because i was enjoying  the fact that i could drink beer in the theater during the movie.

But seriously, i remember one shot of Kirk and Spock where they were simply standing on the bridge and there was a bright blue lens flare streaking across the entire screen.

Yeah, I do hope he eases it back a bit as far as shaky cam and lens flares.  And, while I really liked the movie, I hope he goes with an antagonist that is better developed and has less retarded motivations.  Oh, and no Borg.  Seriously, do not include the Borg in any way.

Hey guys, have I posted these before?  They are from our roadtrip last August from Boston to Des Moines.

We were searching the map old-school style, and in red letters on Riverside, IA read "FUTURE BIRTHPLACE OF CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK"

It was lots of fun :D

Heh.  The Enterprise model is pretty neat!

The less said about the Chekov painting though...   :)

It could be worse.  It could be a painting of Chekhov in his Dutch Boy outfit from Star Trek III.
