The Quiet Earth?

That's the one.  :)

It's really good, but it falls apart in the final third.

Martial art/stunt movie - Ong Bak (or anything with Tony Jaa in it), and any OLDER jackie chan film (police story, operation condor, etc..)

Favorite mob/con-man film: Nine Queens

Favorite fantasy: Pans Labyrinth. Beautiful and disturbing film.

Bollywood: Lagaan, Dil Se & Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Silent film: Cabinet of Dr Caligari (original) or any 'silent' chaplin films

Favorite Egoyan Directed film: Sweet Hereafter and Exotica (yes he deserves his own category IMO)

Military Film - Das Boot

Best what the hell was I watching movie? : Persona (Too complex for my brain to fully comprehend)

Best unhappy happy ending (it makes sense if you watch it! : Old Boy.

Best Creepy movie: Devil's Backbone

Best Love Story: The Road Home, Princess and the warrior....  these are very atypical of that genre.

Best Heart Warming movie :  Children of Heaven,  Not One Less, Shall We Dance (japanese original)

Favorite Horror: Three Extremes and a slew of other japanese films. The japanese know how to do 'em right. Too bad we botch up their work.

And lastly, favorite film that hollywood destroyed. Insomnia. The original was superb.... the new version was a hacked version with horrible over acting.

These are just a few off the top of my head. I could go on forever. I think this thread should have been A LOT more specific. I'll definitely be checking out other people's recommendations here.

Since you have Holy Mountain up there... I think El Topo deserves a mention. Also another good one by that director. Kind of love or hate sort of movies. Good stuff though. I never saw the vanishing remake they made. The original one was awesome though.

Yep, thanks Rude, and yes fair point basehart :)

The Seven Samurai.  I'm surprised it took until the second page of this thread for someone to name it.  A film so great, it got churned through the Hollywood Remake Machine, and was still good.

I will also have to name Pan's Labyrinth as another favorite. I could watch that movie over and over and never get bored.

And just for clarity, let's say that "foreign film" means any film does not use your native language.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."
