To the best of my knowledge and searching we don't have a post on this.

Last week in my Film History class we watched two Italian neo-realism films: The Bicycle Thief and Umberto D. Both awesome movies (Umberto especially blew me away), and it got me thinking about what foreign films that you guys have seen and loved.

For me it will always be The Lives of Others. What's yours?

Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

I thought about this (probably too long) and defining "foreign" might be a good idea. Is it anything that isn't made in the US, or non-English, or non-Western culture, or made in the US if you aren't American? Leaves a lot of room if you're thinking globally...

I love Australian films so of course my favorite foreign film is: Breaker Morant (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0080310/).

Edward Woodward is awesome, the story's very compelling (and true), the screenplay is well-done, the acting is superb. Exxxxxcellent movie. ;D

I think of all time, my fave foreign film is Blue starring Juliette Binoche

That's my favorite of Kieslowski's films.

Me and Tripe are foreigners technically still.  Does this mean we gotta pick American movies?  What about our friends across the water?  ;D

Anyways.  I pick Ikiru or Chungking Express.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

Aww man, there are so many foreign movies that I love.  I couldn't possibly pick one.  Criterion put out some really great ones though, like The Battle for Algiers or Wages of Fear.

Bob

Yeah, you could probably spend several months strolling through the Criterion DVDs and find winners.

I am partial to Yojimbo and Ivan the Terrible.

I love, love, love the comedies of Jacques Tati.  Monsieur Hulot's Vacation is almost perfect.

Concurred.  I also have to say Amelie, Cinema Paradiso, and The Virgin Spring.

Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain

It will forever be my favorite movie and is absolute magic. It plays as a huge inspiration in my life, and some of its many nuances can be found in what I'm working on creatively too.

That's a friend of mine's favourite movie, too.  Her daughter is called Amelie, in fact.  :)

Good call on both, especially Wages of Fear.   A lot of directors can definitely learn a thing or two about building and sustaining tension in a scene with that movie.

Double Vision, although I have a soft spot for Inside Information.

Oh, foreign films. Sorry. I read it as something else.
