Tropic Thunder.  This is the greatest movie of all time and the worst movie I have ever seen. I can't believe everyone said it was so good and bad.

um... what?

Eight Pounds.

I cried like a little girl reading Twilight, not brilliant or anything but there's enough interesting film making to cut through most of the cheese.  I continue to be a big supporter of Will Smith.

Is that the sequel to 7 Pounds?  :P

dyslectic prequel to Eight Rounds.

Both prequels to John Cena's upcoming 12 Rounds, right?

The Lady Rommel

OK, this is bad, but there was nothing else on...Dragnet.  It was on HBO Family.

I'd seen it when I was young.  Wouldn't really call it a family movie though.  You have strippers, violence, a lot of sex talk, and an attempted virgin sacrifice.  I certainly wouldn't want my young kids to watch it.  Although I was probably 11 or so when I saw it and it did affect my life any.

Plus there's a Richard Kiel lookalike in it.

Really gotta get to the video store this weekend.  Try to get Tropic Thunder.
I don't see race.  People tell me I'm white and I believe them because I watch Antiques Roadshow.

Yes this dude:

This would be his most famous role:

He looks so feminine back then.

You see, everyone either said Tropic Thunder was great or terrible, and each group can't believe the other one said that because...

Oh forget it. Eat your Jello.

What did YOU think about Tropic Thunder?

I thought it was simply too long. Comedy can't be funny for two hours. That's why people were let down. It's gotta be fast and furious (but with less Vin Diesel). Plus, you expect too much if you expect anything from a Ben Stiller movie. I dunno if the Netflix version is extended or not. If it is, they need a "taken away from the director" cut. Otherwise, it was plenty funny. Not brilliant and not terrible. Just too long. Comedy should leave people wanting more.

One thing that really struck me is that Ben Stiller is not good at character reveals. Nolte is first seen in the shadows. So, not seen. RDJ is shown as his character without any reveal, before you know it's him and that he's a white guy, and he doesn't have a hilarious first line, it's dry. Tom Cruise is seen too clearly in TV clips before he has a line so you have time to wonder if it's him before you know. I hate that. If you have cameos like that, you should milk the surprise. The Austin Powers movies did that perfectly (also had a Tom Cruise cameo). As a result, I actually thought Nick Nolte was Josh Brolin doing a Nick Nolte impression (because he rather unfortunately kind of looks like him these days), which would have been way better. It ruined it for me finding out it was just Nick Nolte.

THE QUEEN!!!

Tales from Earth Sea by Goro Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli)
I'm a little traumatized by this. I'm a huge Ghibli fan but I wasn't ready for how heavy this was going to be. I was expecting Castle in the Sky or Spirited Away--Princess Mononoke at the heaviest. I wish I'd known it was going to be heavy as Graveyard of the Fireflies. Phew! I had to watch some Pixar Shorts before I could go to bed. I was pretty freaked out.
That being said, I found it pretty well done, and I did enjoy it. All I'm saying is I wished I'd been mentally prepped for how heavy it was going to be.
Critique-wise, i thought it was brilliantly animated as usual--no one can do backgrounds like Ghibli--and the story was captivating, but it wasn't as well written as I'm used to from them--some story points weren't thought out as well. It's still better than a lot of movies you see these days, but I see why Hayao Miyazaki was disappointed, he being a perfectionist.
But I do recommend it. Just be in a fantastic mood.

Saving Private Ryan. I thought I should see it once before Rifftra... *muffledscream*

Frogs (1972)

This is the first movie I've ever seen based just on its poster

Sam Elliot ends up on an island with a rich man and his obnoxious family.  Then the animals start killing everyone is ridiculous ways (for example -  knocking over bottles of poison in a greenhouse).   And it might be the end of the world.

Fully half the movie is shots of frogs, snakes, lizards, and other animals looking all pissed off.

A far as bad movies go it was only okay, though I am going to have to buy that poster.

I saw Fanboys last night.  I've been waiting since 2006 for this movie and, thankfully, I enjoyed it.  It wasn't a masterpiece by any means.  There was a cameo every 5 minutes or so but the story was okay, the Star Wars trivia bit got a little old of course.  After all the debates and pushing the release date back again and again and again I'm glad they kept the cancer story line.  The movie really wouldn't have made a ton of sense otherwise.  If you're a Star Wars fan I would definitely check this out if you can for some light comedy and a love letter to Lucas.
