Doctor Who?

You would think these people would try to think out side the box once in a while.

For the past decade or so it seems like the same movies keep winning again again,no wonder no one watches the awards any more.

Actually, I think there's probably 2 reasons why audiences are declining:

1. The show's too long! People don't want to see technical awards for a couple of hours to get to the important stuff.
2. The popular movies are rarely nominated, so less people care.

This article breaks things down by actual numbers (Best Pics' total grosses).  It's very fascinating because I suspected things started splitting at Weinstein's hijacking in the mid 90s.  It's actually in 2005 when things took a drastic turn.

True story, the day the nominations were announced, I overheard a girl on the el say that the Sex and the City movie should have been nominated and it was sexist that it wasn't.  That was the day I began to hate my gender.

Ah, yes. I've learned that anyone-anyone-who dares criticize Sex and the City is automatically a misogynist. So, Courtney, anias.jude, Trumpysgirl, Hebs, Dim of the Yard, ebeth and Plastic Self-Cleaning Duck, I hate to break the news to you like this, but it turns out you're all horrible sexist woman-bashing vagina-loathers.

Isn't it sexist to nominate a movie not based on its merits but by its gender?

Doctor Who?

Movies have genders ???

Still I guess in Sex and the City's case that would have to be true.

To me any way it seems that Sex and the City it's self is pretty sexist,I have never seen an episode but from what I can tell from the adds it shows all woman as being shallow and only being happy if they are shopping or on a date.

I'm starting to think I probably care more about the Oscars than anyone else on the forum.  In any case, I found this Mac vs. PC spoof about The Studio Movie vs. The Indie Movie from FunnyOrDie.com.  The first and last ones are the best.  The last one is tres apropot for this year's Oscars (could somebody help with embedding, please):

#1: Crew
This one contrasts the two go about making a movie

#2: Synergy
This one exposes how crappy remakes happen

#3: Funding
This one shows the pitfalls of raising money for both sides

#4: Awards
This one is just spot-on about competing for awards

This is a double posting and I can't find the "delete" link for this.

They're okay.  A little obvious, but not bad.

I don't mind the Oscars, and I like seeing certain people getting recognised for their work, but it's too damned long! :)

Relaxing Dragon

Having finally seen The Wrestler, I can say two things. One, Roarke did an outstanding job, but I still think that statue should end up with Penn. Two, why the hell isn't Bruce Springsteen's song nominated for Best Original Song? Seriously, that's really bizarre. The Academy usually has no problem filling up that category.

Yes I wish they dispense with the dull things like best actor and picture and bollocks like that and really recognize those who really make movies happen; the technical folks.

Has it never occured to anyone that getting a golden statue from a secret group of unknown individuals is kind of creepy? People act so honored, and they don't even know who the hell "the academy" is. This does not happen elsewhere in life. Yet this suspicious act is accepted because it is "tradition."

QuoteThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), a professional honorary organization, maintains a voting membership of 5,829 as of 2007.

Actors constitute the largest voting bloc, numbering 1,311 members (22 percent) of the Academy's composition. Votes have been certified by the auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (and its predecessor Price Waterhouse) for the past 73 annual awards ceremonies.[16]

All AMPAS members must be invited to join. Invitation comes from the Board of Governors, on behalf of Academy Branch Executive Committees. Membership eligibility may be achieved by a competitive nomination or a member may submit a name based on other significant contribution to the field of motion pictures.

New membership proposals are considered annually. The Academy does not publicly disclose its membership, although as recently as 2007 press releases have announced the names of those who have been invited to join. The 2007 release also stated that it has just under 6,000 voting members. While the membership had been growing, stricter policies have kept its size steady since then.

You are aware of the Technical Oscars, right?  It's a full-out awards event... it's just not televised.  (And yes, they're the official Academy Awards kind).
