Army of Darkness was the first movie I paid for that I thought was flat-out stupid. I know people like it for some reason, but everything in that movie can be found done better in other movies. It didn't really add anything to cinema. It just combined a lot of different crap from other films. I guess some people think that's "cool." It's pretty much the formula Tarantino uses.

Um, based on how you define it, the whole of human creative enterprise could consist of things cobbled together from other things. Joseph Cambell certainly made the case that were was nothing in any film you can't get from other films.

I mean, cripes, all matter uses electrons, neutrons, and protons as components, but there's a world of difference between sulphuric acid and a cheese sammich.

Wow, good point. And you didn't even have to use hyperbole to make it.

The snooty academic version of this discussion is, "You can't write anything new about Egypt." :)

Doctor Who?

I started to hate Lucass at the age of 12.
You're trying too hard to convince us you were that cool. Sorry, I don't buy it. You were probably first in line to get the "Greedo Shoots First" action figure.

Nope.

I was really upset by that.

I was so looking forward to it and then well we all saw what i got to see.

I stuck with my old non SE VHSes and latter got a Laserdisc player just so i could watch the non SEed movies in Widescreen.

XP well, I'm a hyperbole-using guy.

I just think that army of darkness has the trademark Splatterstick that isn't very common, and lots of skeleton warriors. Maybe there are some other things in existence that combine supernatural evil and comical use of violence and pratfalls, and to be sure skeleton warriors are 100% original, but AoD is the only place I can find them in such abundance.

There's nothing in AOD that isn't in Evil Dead 2, a Harryhausen movie, or a Three Stooges short, all done better in the originals. That, and it's just stupid to have an R rated horror movie with no gore, no nudity, and a guy acting like a stooge for 90 minutes while the audience is pelted with outdated special effects. There wasn't a movie as brutal as the original Evil Dead, and there wasn't a movie as brutally funny as Evil Dead 2. That's why they were unique. Army of Darkness went halfway with the horror and the humor, so it was a big half-assed mess that plays like an adventure movie for kids. Whether you like it or not, it's still a brutally stupid movie.

Chaos

Yeah, that's where Shemp came from, right? They forced Curly to swallow a tiny clone of himself, and Shemp grew out of his shoulder. That was my favourite episode. :P

I found Evil Dead II scarier and Evil Dead 3 funnier, and I like the fantasy/adventure angle. However, I can understand where the film fails in your eyes, and I admit that it doesn't seem like much of an R movie.

Plastic Self-Cleaning Duck

Some movie with Paul Newman about Formula 1 racing - don't know the name of it.

I was four or five and my family was up in Orlando visiting my Aunt and family.  The only way the older kids could get to see movies was to convince the adults that all the kids wanted to see the same movie....so I got stuck at this thing because my eldest cousin, Wayne wanted to see it and bullied his sisters into saying they wanted to see it too.

Until then, I never knew that movies could be boring and pointless.  Cars driving around and around in real life is bad enough....

I'm pretty sure it was The Screaming Scull on MST3K. I watched when I was little.

Well, we finally agree on something...

My Dad and saw the Italian rip off of Jaws "Great White" in the theater before it got yanked by the Spielberg/Universal injunction. The effects were so bad we were just laughing. I was 10 years old.
