You could be right with Sally Hawkins, as I don't really see any standouts in that category and - from what I've read - the movie really hangs on her performance.

I'm not sure Meryl Streep will win for Doubt though, as there's been huge buzz about Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road.

Yeah the female performances (Comedy/Musical) mostly haven't been that great this year, so I think she does have a good chance actually. Like I said I haven't caught Revolutionary Road so I cant really compare the two. I've never been a big Streep fan but she was pretty good in Doubt. The Actor category really blows the Actress category out of the water this year, though. As for Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) I think Happy-Go-Lucky has a great chance. All of those other films didn't really compare to it for me.

The most galling thing about that entire list is that Mamma Mia! is on a shortlist for "best of" anything.  Wall.E should be there instead, not given a consolation prize of best animated feature.  Hell, I might even have it win that category.   :)

iv3rdawG

Yeah, no kidding. There are really a lot of stupid decisions made in these award shows. See my disgust with the whole foreign language category earlier.

QuoteMy sources say the Motion Picture Academy has reversed its decision to disqualify the score for "The Dark Knight." Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, who collaborated on the music, will now be able to compete in the best original score category. The Academy had ruled the score ineligible last month, saying there were too many composers--five, in all--listed on the music cue sheet. I can't get the Academy's executive director Bruce Davis on the phone, but I've seen an Academy release saying its music branch executive committee voted to change the decision last Friday. When Davis and I spoke earlier last week, he was still defending the decision, saying that the Academy's music branch "sees this as an award, like cinematography or directing, where you want to award a single creator. This isn't like visual effects. Except for extraordinary circumstances, it's an award that should go to one person."
They should disqualify it for being shit. There's a whole feature on the DVD about Hans "I Hate Music And Humanity" Zimmer's holy quest to find the most irritating sounds imaginable and play them all at once whenever the Joker's onscreen, instead of composing. And they didn't mention James Newton Howard at all. If that's the most interesting thing about the score, then what about it deserves an award?

So, everyone's predictions for the Golden Globes?

My predictions:

DRAMA - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
COMEDY - Burn After Reading
ACTOR, DRAMA - Sean Penn
ACTRESS, DRAMA - Anne Hathaway
ACTOR, COMEDY OR MUSICAL - Colin Farrell
ACTRESS, COMEDY OR MUSICAL - Sally Hawkins
SUPPORTING ACTOR -  Heath Ledger
SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Kate Winslet
DIRECTOR - David Fincher
SCREENPLAY - Eric Roth (Button)
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - (don't have a clue)
ANIMATED FEATURE FILM - WALL-E
ORIGINAL SCORE - Alexandre Desplat (Button)
ORIGINAL SONG - "The Wrestler"

In reality, I would love for In Bruges to win Best Picture.  But I don't think that will happen and that they will give it to the Coens.

It doesn't really matter too much anyway.  It's the Golden Globes. They are the biggest load of crap of any of the awards.  They only exist to give the studios a marketing tool, to give NBC a show with lots of hot movie stars, and to give the morons in the Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. a chance to get lavished attention onto them by the studios.

If it wasn't for the fact that I hope this will give some sort of Oscar rub to the seemingly forgotten In Bruges, I wouldn't even care about this show.

I liked Mamma Mia!, but I wouldn't have it as one of the best films of the year.  I'd have Tropic Thunder or Pineapple Express in there ahead of it.

Golden Globes are on Sunday. Anymore predictions just for fun?

Well, I still plan on basically ignoring the Globes (it's tradition), but here's a couple predictions (or rather, "in a just World this happens"):

Best Drama goes to Slumdog Millionaire
Best Comedy goes to In Bruges (It would be perfect if this film won)
Best Drama goes to Sean Penn
Best Comedy Actor goes to Brendan Gleeson
Best Drama Actress goes to Meryl Streep
Best Comedy Actress goes to Meryl Streep (OK probably not, but that would be awesome if it did :P)
Best Supporting Actor goes to Philip Seymour Hoffman (though it'll probably be Heath. Though if Ralph Fiennes got a nom for In Bruges, it would be all his)
Best Supporting Actress goes to Marisa Tomei (just taking a wild stab here)
Best Director goes to Danny Boyle
Best Screenplay goes to Simon Beaufoy
Best Foreign Feature goes to Waltz With Bashir (it's your own fault Sweden!)
Best Animated film is such a lock it's crazy to even think of predicting it
Best Score goes to A.R. Rahman (that's right, going for a Slumdog Sweep here)
Best Original Song goes to "Down to Earth" (kinda doubtful here, but still hoping)

That's all I got.

Trumpysgirl

Wow, for all of the giant egos being stroked and false modesty displayed tonight, there was still a surprising amount of genuine gratefulness. That's why I still watch these shows.

Sally Hawkins and Kate Winslet were priceless.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

Slumdog sweep, totally called it :P

While I was a bit annoyed at some of the winners (Vicky Cristina Barcelona? Seriously?), overall a good show from a bunch of drunken (and in Colin's case, probably high) celebrities.

Now enough of this fooling around, let's bring on the Oscars.

bratpop

So are they going to exhume Heath Ledger every time he wins an award, or are they going to wait and put them all in at once?
