The fans ruined the movie

Doctor Who?

I'd assume supporting since they billed Bale as the star of TDK.

I really hope Ledger wins something.

And sometimes you can get a best supporting nod for about six minutes screen time *cought*judidench*cough*.

Yeah but it was the Kentucky Derby of The Virgin Queen.  The six most exciting minutes of Elizabeth I on film.

Except for the whole of Elizabeth, with Cate Blanchett.  Or Flora Robson in Fire Over England.  Or Bette Davis in the Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex.  It's because of some these performances that it was easy for Judi to inhabit that character and be recognisable to audiences and the academy.

Anyone know how Warner (or whoever made TDK) is pushing Ledger, lead or supporting?
Supporting.  IMO, it's being done that way to be safer.  Y'know, less competitive that way.

Ruby Dee as the mother to Denzel's character in last year's "American Gangster" is the second shortest performance (at approximately five minutes) ever to be nominated for an acting Oscar, following that of the cameo appearance of Sylvia Miles in Midnight Cowboy.

Would you also include The Golden Age?  Because that sucked a fair amount of ass.

I really liked the BBC production The Virgin Queen from a couple years back in a really soap opera kinda way.
They had this guy as Robert Dudley and he was so emo it hurt.

It was probably in Bale's contract that the studio promote him for an Oscar nod as "Best Actor".   Even Patrick Stewart had the nerve to make it contractual that Paramount promote him for a "Best Actor" nod for (gag) Star Trek: Nemesis.  They even had a web page up at the time.

Also, there's the All About Eve problem.  Davis and Baxter both ended up being nominated for "Best Actress" in that film and ended up cancelling each other out.  Sometimes the studios make calcuated submissions to the Academy to make sure they get as many nominations as possible for a film - even if it makes it look like they're saying that one actor was lesser than another in the film.

Dare I say that Aaron Eckhart was at least as good as Heath Ledger - and possibly better since he had to go from good to psycho within the same film.  Ledger's Joker was the same from frame one of film.

Perhaps, but Blanchett was still excellent in the movie - though probably still too young to play Elizabeth at that period.

I've heard that before, but my biggest issue with the movie is that I felt the transformation was forced.  Just my opinion.  I've talked to others who feel the same way as you tho.

I did not know about that.  That's hilarious!  Are there any ads or sites you can direct me to that still show this?

Yeah Whedon's much better as an ideas man than he is as a writer, most of the really good Buffy and Angel episodes are by other writers.

I don't know if I agree with that. Most of my favorite episodes were written by Joss, such as The Body, Once More with Feeling, A Hole in the World, Boogerbritches' Final Stand. That said, not everything he wrote was brilliant (or even good), and he certainly hired some amazing writers (I love you, Jane Espenson).

No such luck - yet.  It was back just after the movie was released.  It was part of Paramount's "For Your Consideration" page and mentioned him, the people who did the Visual Effects and the Sound work.   Wish now I'd saved the page.

Erm, you can have TWO best actors from the same movie, you know. There's not a bat's chance in hell that Bale would ever win for playing fucking Batman. Even if he wanted to be up for "best actor" there's no reason why Heath couldn't also be, and nothing Bale could do about it. I just think it's STUPID to call the villain in a good vs evil story a supporting character. The villain doesn't support the story, he IS the story. It's a Joker movie where the hero decides to stop being a hero TWICE for very stupid reasons.

FYI There are industry magazines that have full page "for your consideration" ads. I saved some from Road to Perdition and Spider-Man. I can't remember for the life of me what the name of the magazine I had was, but presumably you could order back issues from when Star Trek: Flegmesis came out. I think they have names like "Hollywood, Woo!" and "You Go, Actor!"

Yeah, and in a lot of the commentaries, the writers say stuff like.  "I get people come up to me and quote lines from episodes that I wrote, but where Joss actually did the final dialogue pass."  The all praise him for making them look good.

I don't know, sort of sounds like they're sucking up to the boss a little, or being self deprecating. I mean they might not be but it sounds a little fawning.

bratpop

What they meant to say was, "That prick bastard butchered my line!"
