The fans ruined the movie

There are many movies that are hard to watch (or depending on when you first saw it, re-visit) because the fanbase became too vocal and worship-y.  I'm trying to think of all of them.  Like...

Titanic - Y'know, it's hard to admit, but it's a good, well-done movie.  James Cameron gives his audience the goods.  The fact that every 13 year old girl saw the movie 15 times and melted if you even began to say Leonardo DiCaprio is what helps put it as a groaner now.  Plus "Biggest Movie of All Time" added onto that.  Strip away all these things and come to the movie as it is.  Hard to do, ain't it?  I know most here will support its suckiness, but I think Cameron remains a master filmmaker.

The Little Mermaid - Single-handedly rejuvinated Disney.  It was the injection of Broadway-style songs that helped pioneer Disney to unsurmountable success, and it can be all traced back to this one gem.  Think back to when it first came out (if you can).  The biggest Disney animated hits in the past ten years were "Oliver & Co." and "The Great Mouse Detective."  They're fine as niche entertainment, but they're not what brought Disney back.  Now... the movie is relegated to 8 year old girls.  Its little-girl title helps perpetuate it.  "The Princess Bride" and "Little Miss Sunshine" suffer the same poor naming problem.

Napoleon Dynamite - Do I need to elaborate?

Rocky Horror Picture Show - Again... do I need to elaborate?

I'd like to introduce The Dark Knight?  "Sacrilege!"  "No!  You can't!"  And that's the very reason why.  Now, I personally love the movie, the rabid fans give it a bad name.  Enough so that I think it could hurt its Oscar chances.  The same thing happened to "Titanic."  It was due its gold, but the hype hurt its name after several years to what it is now.  I believe TDK has the same potential.  And this is probably not the best forum to discuss this either, but I'm going to say the Emperor has no clothes (even though I think the movie is near perfect and the sight of a naked Palpatine will leave me in a coma for months on end).  While it still seems great now, I really wonder how it will be viewed ten years from now (TDK... not Naked Palpatine).  I am really hoping my prediction is wrong... for Palpatine's modesty at the least.

I know I'm leaving other movies out.  But that's all I can think of right now.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail-
Still a good movie, but it's been too oft quoted, so the impact of the jokes are lessened.
From XKCD-

Trumpysgirl

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Sequel - We all remember those days, when morons who thought that they did a good Jim Carey impression would mimic his every line like they were the comedic god that came up with it. I was so close to punching someone in the face back then, and I was only eight at the time!
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

Austin Powers:  Sure the increasingly bad sequels didn't help but even before they came out, fans were ruining it.

I love Dark Knight but I agree that saying a movie is untouchable in it's greatness tarnishes it's reputation.  And not to slight Heath Ledger, but I'm more of a Mark Hamill fan.

The Star Wars franchise.  It's all YOUR fault we got those crappy prequels.  :)

I guess this is as good a thread as any to admit this....

I actually haven't seen The Dark Knight yet.

Neither have I.  I've been patiently waiting for Santa to give me the Blu Ray disc.

RobtheBarbarian

The Lord of the Rings movies.

It's not the "nerds" that can point out Minas Tirith on a map of Middle Earth with memory alone that bother me. It's the teenagers who learn Elven phrases and jump up and down in the theater every time Aragorn does something. To this very day I reflexively punch whoever's next to me at the time whenever I see Orlando Bloom's Legolas.

What?!?!?  If Fox had had it's way that movie would be rotting in a storage unit somewhere.  It was the fans in NYC getting a theater to show it at midnight once a week and word of mouth that saved it from obscurity.  I've seen more than one interview with Richard O'Brien where he says that the audience participation is great - and not just because of the money he makes from it all.  That Rocky Horror was meant to be theater to start with and what is the participation but theater?

Doc Steve

Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings.  I don't think I need to explain.

Rocky Horror is a great movie. The fans are idiots. I mean they clearly like it, they want to be the characters more than any straight or sane kid has ever wanted to be Luke Skywalker. Yet they make fun of it. And they don't seem to realize they're making fun of it anymore because they're too hung up on the movie itself. Don't get me wrong, these guys invented riffing. But it's not a bad movie. It's supposed to be as ridiculous as it is. I don't see the point in making it any weirder by throwing shit at the screen and adding MORE obscene dialogue. And it's definately not good enough to watch twice a week. You can't really like this movie as a piece of film history and disassociate yourself with the "fans."

I couldnt disagree more about Monty Python being quoted too much, and I also disagree with stansimpsons opinion about the dark kinnnnnnnigit!                                                                                    ni!

You disagree with hoping my prediction is wrong?

Ohhhh, that must be why Caddyshack isn't funny.

Wait, no... it was never funny. (Excepting Bill Murray's scenes, but that's like a whole other movie anyway.)

No. No, you do not.

Although in my opinion, that film was ruined the moment Bakshi signed on as director.
