I think that might have been sarcasm, anais

Damn, my sarcasm detector is in the shop!

Not Clerks... Dogma. The only film with any kind of statement that isn't total BS.

Chaos

Clerks had a statement... having sex with a dead guy is traumatizing. :P

But you can't say that he's a bad director. Surely, his stories are more thought-out, moreover he is a more honest filmmaker than Joel Schumacher? Schumacher made the two most commercial, studio-approved, least artistic superhero movies of all time. And that's saying something! Tarantino's work comes from an honest love of film. Surely, you can't put him in the same train as Schumacher and Michael Bay.

Quote from: Nergol on December 01, 2008, 06:48:54 PMKevin Smith - Clerks. Many people have a great story inside them waiting to be told. Kevin Smith had one. One. And then he kept retelling it, over and over and over again. He hasn't had a fresh idea in 15 years, and yet they keep letting him make movies. Please, somebody send him to go write comic books, or something.

Define "fresh". Did Clerks or Mallrats feature a love story between a straight guy and a lesbian, or an abortionist tapped by God to save the world? Whatever you think of his films, he doesn't write the same thing over and over again. He has a specific style of humor throughout his films, but it's not the same movie over and over again.

No, we can totally say he's a bad director. He's just bad in different ways from Schumacher and Bay. And for the record, Jackie Brown was his only good movie.

Dogma is actually one of my least favorite Smith movies (above J&SB Strike Back and Jersey Girl certainly, but far below the others).  I love the message, but the execution was so broad and slapsticky that I just didn't care for it.

Nicholas Meyer - Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan The other movies ranged from so-so to awful....

Wait....Time After Time and ST: The Undiscovered Country were "so-so to awful"???  *head smack*

Ortega

I got dragged into seeing Phone Booth in the theaters, and was surprised that it was decent.

And then i literally did a spit-take, when the credits rolled, and it said: Directed by Joel Shumaker.

I didn't see it in theaters, but my reaction was pretty much the same.

Pak-Man

I'm gonna throw Transformers out there. I know I won't get a lot of agreement, but I'm throwing it out there.

If only the studio had thrown it (the script) out before they produced it.

Yeah, I didn't know going in that it was a Schumaker piece either (or I almost certainly wouldn't have seen it), but I thought it was a pretty entertaining movie. We actually considered doing this one for Riff Raff Theater, but ultimately decided it would be too difficult for people to write material for a movie where the scenery never changes the entire time (doable, but difficult).

Bad Boys II perhaps? I always enjoyed that one.

Explain why he's a bad director. Are the performances bad? Are there boom mics hanging all over the place? Does he not have a specific style of structure, storytelling, choice of music, etc.?

OK, let me preface this by saying that i actually enjoy most of Tarantino's films, so dial it back a bit.

However, some people find his style, (which is bascially re-creating scenes from his favorite movies when he was a kid), a bit hackneyed and dirivitive.  They think that he hides behind a venner of pithy dialouge to disguise the fact that he has no ideas of his own.  They think he gets called a genius for blantantly ripping of movies not a lot of people have heard of, and no one calls him on it.

That's the general idea i get from what people on the forum have said about him.  As i've said before, i enjoy most of his work, so there.........try not to spaz out.
