Does anyone else think it's weird that they used Smashing Pumpkins "The End is the Beginning is the End" from Batman and Robin for the trailer?

You beat me to it. Since that song was the exact one good thing about Batman & Robin, I'm not sure if it was a goof, or a bit of tongue-in-cheek ribbing toward cheesy comic adaptations.

I liked it, but I'm a pretty die hard SP fan and that's one of my favorite songs.  So I'm probably biased but I thought it worked and was really cool.

I haven't read Watchmen before, but I'm curious now.  After seeing the trailer I'm definitely tempted to pick up the graphic novel.

Do everything in your power to not have the ending spoiled for you.  It's still amazing if you know it (like I did, unfortunately) but it'll be all the more rewarding if you don't.  I also heard the suggestion that it's best read one chapter a night.

One cool thing to note that I found out recently: the fifth chapter is a sort of a visual palindrome.  Start by looking at the last panel, then the first, then the second, then the second last and so on.

Doctor Who?

Also Dr., don't let the title fool you, there is no actual team called the Watchmen in it.  It's a reference to "Who Watches the Watchmen"

I too, was thinking the same thing about Smashing Pumpkins.  I actually would not have gone with any singing in the trailer.

Also, I almost wish it was ONLY a trailer.  yes, it is a beautiful trailer and I liked 300 but Watchmen is a very subtle and intracate book and based on his past work I don't know if he has it in him.  It's not that I think he's a bad director, he just might be in over my head.  Still, despite my doubts, I would love to be surprised.  I knew he would have the look down.  Let's hope he can make that story work.  Also, fingers crossed for the Black Freighter!

So it's not about a team of superheros who go around fixing broken watches?!

What a rip off!

I was  going to see it until you said something, thanks.

I may check it out but first tell me is this one of those depressing comics were the heroes are as bad as the villains and everyone is the USA goverment is evil?

It sounds like it could be and if so I kind of had my fill of that kind of stuff with Civil War last year.

It sounds like it could be good but I am kind of burned out on that type of story and would like to know before I spend $20.

Sorry for all the questions but the trailer looked good but with ticked prices going up every time I go to the movies I want to find out as much as I can.

Ok I think you might find yourself bummed out by this story. What you're asking about isn't exactly what it's like but it's close enough. For one thing there really aren't any Supervillains per se, just...

It is significantly better than Civil  War though.

Ok thanks.

I will give it a try but i think I will wait a few more months.

I normally enjoy that type of story but Civil War was just so bad it left me feeling burnt out.

Thanks again for your help.

The trailer look good I have to say.

Funny you should mention Watchmaker though.  There's an entire chapter about that.

Agreed.  I just don't think Zack Snyder has it in him based on his previous movies.  It's a given that he'll deliver a good looking and entertaining movie but he needs to get some John Travolta type phenomenon brain tumor to develop the skillz to do something layered and not superficial.

He may surprise us, though. Based on previous movies, a year ago I thought Heath Ledger was an odd choice for the Joker, and here we are, a year later. :^)

If someone wants to try something different, my instinct is to let him and see what happens, rather than immediately predict their failure.

Yeah, I guess I'm being too pessimistic.  When it comes down to it, I want him to surprise us, I hope he can capture as many layers of the story as possible and not just the action beats.

Off on your tangent:  what was your previous exposure to Heath Ledger that made you think him an odd choice?  I was the opposite, I thought him to be a most inspired choice.  Have you seen Lords of Dogtown?  From that relatively small role, I can picture a direct line leading right to his Joker.  And then there was Brokeback Mountain which I absolutely loved.

Honestly, I'd never seen either one, which is probably why I felt like I did. I had seen A Knights Tale and the Brothers Grimm, which is probably an unfortunate selection of his library. :^) Still, going from oscar material to comic book movie seemed odd at the time (Until it turned out that this comic book movie is oscar material, but that's a topic for another thread. :^))

My wife was reading an article shortly after his death about this very subject. Apparently what happened is that his agency was trying to make him a certain type of actor with a certain type of career (the whole pretty-boy teen heart throb thing), and that's why he was in all of those horrible, horrible movies. Then he got sick of it because he wasn't happy with being the type cast sort, so he fired his agency and started representing himself. His first movie out from under his agency was... Brokeback Mountain.

So there you go. He had it in him all along, we just didn't know it because his representation was stupid. :)

I also like the fact that Snyder chose to do it because he reasoned it was going to happen with or without him, and he could perhaps keep it from being totally fucked up. That fear may serve the resulting movie well.
