You don't think they're just picking the razzle-dazzle moments to bring in people who don't know the novel?

There's nothing more internet forum that judging things before they happen, I'm happy/suprised to hear the positive feedback to the preview.  Looks fantastic to me, hopefully the movie captures the brilliance of the novel... if not I've still got the novel and a kickass preview.

I guess that's a better way of putting it.  It's just that damn visionary thing that got the warning bells going.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

meh, it's not like they're going to make a preview that says "from the guy who made 300 comes a comic you've probably never heard of"

Dim of the Yard

I enjoyed the trailer the first time I saw it yesterday, following the link that Chris offered up, and I thought it looked really neat.  I saw the trailer again last night/this morning before Dark Knight came on, up on the big screen, with surround sound and everything...

... And I was bored throughout the whole thing, after I got past the inital, "Ooo, Watchmen!".  The thing looks absolutely fantastic, there's little doubt about that, but there's not much else to it.  I was just lost.  I agree with ScottH assessment that they're using the razzle-dazzle stuff to entice people who don't read the comics, but the trailers don't really offer up much else to go on.

I have to say, for a trailer, it just doesn't get that much replay value for me.

BathTub

I love reading the comments from people complaining that the Blue Radioactive Demolecularizing Man doesn't look very realistic.

Shinigami

Does anyone else think it's weird that they used Smashing Pumpkins "The End is the Beginning is the End" from Batman and Robin for the trailer?

Relaxing Dragon

I was really excited to see this trailer, I've been waiting for it ever since I first heard about the movie (love Watchmen, great read). I think using all the action moments looked pretty cool (and I agree that it was probably to draw in people who've never read the it; everyone around me in the theater was wondering just what it was), and I think Dr. Manhattan looks great (he was basically unveiled in the trailer, right? I didn't see any of his pictures before it came out). I can't wait to see more from this one.

QuoteThe amazing trailer for "Watchmen" hit the net yesterday, and even if you watched it several times already, I bet you missed a secret easter egg that director Zack Snyder talked about with MTV News.

"[The assassin] has a gun," Snyder explained, remembering the difficult process of transforming his dark, R-rated film into a trailer for the masses. "So the MPAA said, 'Look you can't have him [holding the gun]' ... I don't even think it's one second. I think it's like 12 frames. He's pointing the gun at the camera, and they said, 'You can't do that.'"

For years, the MPAA has prohibited weapons from being pointed at the "viewer" in advertising, presumably for fear that it will freak them out. That's why you always see guns pointed at angles on movie posters and in film trailers.

"So we erased the gun," Snyder grinned. "And put a walkie-talkie in his hand."

As many filmgoers remember, Steven Spielberg famously re-released his family classic "E.T." in 2002 after using CGI to transform the gun-wielding federal agents into less-threatening agents holding walkie-talkies.

"It was a total Spielberg reference," laughed Snyder. "Because I was like, 'Well, it worked for Spielberg, so we should do that. Just put a walkie-talkie in his hand!' ...[The editors] were like, 'But then you cut to a real gun!' but I'm like, 'No one will ever see that; they'll think he had a gun in the other shot, so it's fine.'"

Take a close look and you'll see the two shots at 1:30 in. The first shows a walkie-talkie, and then we see the gun.

"I was thinking about it afterwards, and I was like, "Damn, we should have given him a bouquet of flowers, or a box of candy," Snyder laughed. "Maybe next time."

You beat me to it. Since that song was the exact one good thing about Batman & Robin, I'm not sure if it was a goof, or a bit of tongue-in-cheek ribbing toward cheesy comic adaptations.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.
Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

BathTub

I wonder if perhaps it had anything to do with the "crystal grown" lyric.

Doctor Who?

I saw the trailer before The Dark Knight but I couldn't tell from it what the movie was about or if it would be worth seeing.

Can anyone tell me Who are The Watchmen? ,What do they do?,and if they are the movie cellebrated comic books of all time how come I have never heard of them?

Thank you.

ScottotD

It was a graphic novel not a comic series like Spider-Man or something which is why you've probably not heard of it..

From wikipedia:

QuoteWatchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. Originally published by DC Comics as a monthly limited series from 1986 to 1987, it was later republished as a trade paperback, which popularized the "graphic novel" format. To date, Watchmen remains the only graphic novel to win a Hugo Award, and is also the only graphic novel to appear on Time Magazine's 2005 list of "the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present."

Watchmen is set in 1985, in an alternative history United States where costumed adventurers are real and the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union (the Doomsday Clock is at five minutes to midnight). It tells the story of a group of past and present superheroes and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own. Watchmen depicts superheroes as real people who must confront ethical and personal issues, who struggle with neuroses and failings, and who—with one notable exception—lack anything recognizable as super powers. Watchmen's deconstruction of the conventional superhero archetype, combined with its innovative adaptation of cinematic techniques and heavy use of symbolism, multi-layered dialogue, and metafiction, has influenced both comics and film.

Really it's about looking at the kind of people who would choose to put on a costume and fight crime and what would motivate them to do that...but it's way better than that makes it sound

Yes, you should be looking forward to the movie, but you really should just go and read the book.

Also Dr., don't let the title fool you, there is no actual team called the Watchmen in it.  It's a reference to "Who Watches the Watchmen"

I too, was thinking the same thing about Smashing Pumpkins.  I actually would not have gone with any singing in the trailer.

Also, I almost wish it was ONLY a trailer.  yes, it is a beautiful trailer and I liked 300 but Watchmen is a very subtle and intracate book and based on his past work I don't know if he has it in him.  It's not that I think he's a bad director, he just might be in over my head.  Still, despite my doubts, I would love to be surprised.  I knew he would have the look down.  Let's hope he can make that story work.  Also, fingers crossed for the Black Freighter!
