The missing scenes from Fritz Lang's 1927 black & white silent film Metropolis have apparently been found in a museum archive in Argentina.

So who's seen at least some this movie? Or even the anime version?

Action Batch

I've seen the film. The shots of the huge machine are impressive to date.

I am really, really, REALLY excited about this!

That's awesome, I wonder if Kino is going to take over the film's restoration. I chuckled when I read an old German movie was found in Argentina "I was in Argentina during the whole war, I swear it.".

This is great news!  I did have the chance a few years back to see the most recently restored print at the Fox Theater here in Atlanta with a live organist.

I'm sure Kino will restore the missing scenes.  It'll take a while for them to do the needed restoration work though.

I own this DVD from the 2002 restoration.

I certainly hope that the footage can be properly restored and integrated back into the movie.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

Metropolis is already a pretty long movie, and it just seems to be getting longer and longer! I think i've owned almost every version that has been released since the 1980s. But this is certainly a great announcement! I'm very curious about the newly discovered scenes involving Maria and the mob. I'm also interested in just what condition the film itself is in.

I'd be surprised if Kino didn't release this.

Let's hope it's now exactly how Lang intended, with Adam Ant on the soundtrack ;)

It was the 2002 Kino 35mm print that I saw at the Fox.  That was a brilliant restoration that they had overseen.  I would imagine that no matter how scratched the newly discovered footage is they will be able to do an amazing job with it.  Remember that they did the restoration work on the print of The Passion of Joan of Ark that was discovered several years ago.  I am very excited about this.  ;D

All we need now is for someone to find an original print of London After Midnight.

I saw one of the dvds of it out and I do remember being blown away by it, I couldn't believe that movie was made in 1927, it just wouldn't fit in my brain.  How does a sci-fi movie from the twenties look that much better than any sci-fi from the fifties?

Very excited to see what got found.

This just HAS to be a Criterion release, right?

No. The company that holds Metropolis' rights has gone with Kino as the DVD distribution.

Well, they better do a bang up job with it.   I have their 2002 restored version and I was impressed with it.
