Well the knee-jerk LUCAS IS THE ANTICHRIST mouth-frothing has started a few times...

He brought that on himself years ago, and you know it.

I think the movie was written to be like a 50s b-movie, which involved aliens. Just like the 30s ones were written to be like Republic serials.  Relax, guys. Nobody's raping your mothers, it's just a movie.

I'm sure my mom would agree that Indy could rape her anyday.   >:D

* SPOILERS BELOW *

I would have been fine with the whole alien thing had they taken the time to really explain any of it. As it is now, virtually nothing made any sense... or at least, there was no motivation for why these aliens did anything. I mean, this is what i could gather from the film:

Hundred and hundreds of years ago trans-dimensional aliens landed near Peru and taught the natives how to create a civilization. Who knows why they did this or for what reason. It didn't seem like they really had much patience, or were the nicest of aliens.

These aliens zipped around the Earth stealing artifacts from other cultures. I assume that they did this to obtain knowledge. But apparently they needed to take this stuff with them and horde it in order to learn about it.

Eventually the natives built them a throne room made of gold where they sat and rotted away. This was built inside their spaceship and rigged with booby-traps for some reason.

Even though they rotted away to just their crystal skeletal system, they could still communicate and move somehow... even though other crystal aliens that crash landed on Earth really, actually died for some reason. Oh yeah, and their remains are magnetic. Huh?

At some point, someone managed to sneak past all the booby-traps and snap off one of the aliens' skulls without pissing off the aliens, who just sat there apparently, even though they could still communicate and move. And i guess they reset all the booby-traps as they left.

The crystal skull easily snaps back into place, and allows the skeleton to move around a bit. And for some reason this also allows all the separate aliens to spin around before combining into one single alien, complete with muscles and skin and stuff. So were there always multiple aliens, or was there just one alien? How do they decide to split up or join together, and why now?

Finally they leave Earth and cover up any evidence that they were ever there. Because now they care about leaving a footprint, whereas before they had no problem starting a civilization, stealing artifacts from other cultures, and jotting around the world.

I'm not just nitpicking... Okay, i'm nitpicking a little bit. But as i was walking out of the theater, and my suspension of disbelief was fading, none of this stuff made any sense. I don't mind filling in a few plot holes with my own imagination, but this was all just too much. The movie didn't provide any rhyme or reason for it's own conclusion. So, it kind of let me down at the end. And that's the feeling i was left with as i left the theater.

Sometimes i had a lot of fun while i was watching the movie. But like i said, after you leave... you can't help but think "What the fuck was that all about?"

It's hard to argue with anything you said...so I won't

There was a nice beat in the otherwise god-awful comic adaptation where Indy looks around all the collected artifacts and says "They were Archaeologists" and has little smile.

Indeed, that was one thing that didn't really bother me at all.  Okay so they hoarded artifacts for themselves, how is that different than a museum taking something from Egypt or wherever to put on display for the benefit of its own people?  The whole aliens that survive as a hive mind despite rotting away didn't make much sense to me, but as for what they were doing there I kind of assumed they were marooned here on their whole archaeological mission and were waiting for all of them to be present and intact before returning to their "home" via the hidden ship that they convinced the local humans to help them build/repair, with the process being interrupted by the removal of the one skull.  Doesn't make total sense, but that's what I came up with in my mind.

It's just sort of a tired ax to grind.

Mmmmm.... no.

Get back to me a few years after he dies, we'll see where I stand.

That's completely true. However I reserve the right to beat that dead horse whenever the mood strikes.

Finally saw it!

YAAY!  Flawed, but I enjoyed it :)

Shia is a really great actor, just as an aside.

The scenes in New Haven were super cool, and of course, because we're idiots, Andy and I didn't even know they were filming last year when we were down there.  We were like "Hey?!  Weeeird, 50's style cars everywhere!"

Alright, apparently this stuff is a lot more obscure than I have ever thought it was. A whole lot of mishapen skulls have been found over the years in South America from cultures that intentionally bound the skulls of their children in order to "imitate the gods". Naturally, this has led to conspiracy theories that those gods must have been aliens. This is also supported by the art of those cultures that sometimes seems to depict things that could be spacecraft and aliens in space suits.

That's where the whole premise that was quite obvious to me from the start came from. They did a lot with it that ultimately made very little sense but that is why I thought anyone who was the least bit surprised by the aliens, especially after Area 51 and all the crap, wasn't paying attention.
