I love how they're already giving us "opening weekend" numbers. THE WEEKEND'S NOT OVER YET!

That happens every week. The numbers usually turn out more or less accurate.

So you'll have to forgive a non-comic-reader, but what is so great about this movie? I'm not snarking, I'm seriously asking. It sounds like a good movie, but . . . A good comic book movie that makes a good profit, sure, that makes sense. $100 million in one weekend?  ??? Sorry, I don't get it.

It was hilarious, had an engaging story, and plenty of action. The acting was top-notch and it was just... fun. To me that makes it a good movie. :)

I'm betting because he was hoping to portray said character in the near future when he was asked.
Being a genocidal maniac is not one of my turn ons.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

I thought I'd read that somewhere and I think Lady D is right on the money on at least some of his motivation there. And who's to balme him?

wurwolf

Lady D, can I just tell you how much I love your venom sig? When we saw that on DVD my daughter and I totally cracked up at Venom driving a truck and honking a horn with his tongue flying around. It was the funniest thing! Sad that it gets cut off in your sig, though.

Okay: Iron Man. I'm agreeing with 99% of the people here and saying that this movie totally rocked the screen correct. Robert Downey Jr. really brought it, but I have to give a huge round of applause to Favs, who did an incredible job of directing. When you make a movie like this you've got to grab people right away. He started off with a great scene, one we've seen a million times nearly in its entirety in the trailer, but still an explosive scene nonetheless (and still made me jump like a little girl), and THEN went into the backstory. Brilliant, I thought. The first movie in a series is always about the set-up and I thought Favs deftly handled that, but I also think that there was the perfect balance between cool shit and set-up shit.  This is important to someone like me whose attention starts to wander if there aren't explosions every five minutes. I loudly applauded Fav's name when it was on the screen during the end-credits.

I'm not much of a comic book nerd (even though comic book movies are my favorite genre), but I think I am quite the Rifftrax nerd. I spent half the movie picking out potential riffs for the Rifftrax treatment that will surely come.

Is it just me, or did Tony Stark call one of his robots---Cambot?

I could swear that he did.

Hmm I didn't realise that was what it was in Lady D's sig,.

Just change the dimensions to 160 by 120 and it should fit. :)

Incidentally what was the brand of burgundy shades Stark was wearing? I want to find some.

QuoteFollowing a huge box-office performance of Iron Man over the weekend, Marvel Studios on Monday announced a series of Avengers films, beginning with an Iron Man sequel.

Iron Man 2 is scheduled for an April 30, 2010 release. Marvel's David Maisel said that the date will continue Marvel's tradition of kicking off the summer movie season. "We view that as an optimum time," Maisel said.

Thor is scheduled for a June 4, 2010 release and The First Avenger: Captain America for May 6, 2011, with The Avengers for July 2011.

Maisel did not list personnel for Iron Man sequel, but stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard are all signed for three films, and director Jon Favreau has expressed interest in returning.

"It would be premature to discuss any kind of detail at this point in time," Maisel said. "We're going to roll up our sleeves and get to work."

Maisel said Iron Man 2 will be used in introduced Thor. He also noted The First Avenger: Captain America is a working title.

Thor will be tricky to get right...  I get the feeling that these movies will be based more around the slightly more realistic Ultimate universe than the traditional one.

Tripe

Oh yeah they most certainly seem to be though I'd say the Ultimate Universe is a bit more stream lined and up top date rather than more realistic. :)

mrbasehart

Well, I did say "slightly".   :)  Though I'm still not entirely sure how an Avengers movie is going to work, are they going to dole out 100 million dollars in actors fees to get everyone involved, or are they going to get new people involved and piss off the fans of the singular movies?  Perhaps the future stars of these movies will have to sign up for the Avengers movie too...

Tripe

See Ann's already said she doesn't care about a Captain America movie, though she's looking forward to Thor.
