About the Rifftrax movie choices, and related stuff.

As someone who also re-authors my own discs and experiences the same cost factor mentioned above, I don't think it's fair to put that back on the RiffTrax crew.  Re-authoring is a personal choice... it's not the only way of enjoying RiffTrax.

Although it is the best way.   :)

Hi Bill.  I don't really have a question.  Just a comment.

My main complaint with you guys riffing new movies is how much more money it costs me in the end.

I re-author all of the Rifftrax you guys put out (Meaning I take the mp3 file, sync it with the movie and burn that onto a DVD-R for easier hassle-free viewings).  To do this legally I have to actually purchase the movies you guys are riffing.

So, when you guys riff a new movie that I don't particularly like on it's own (like I Am Legend) it kinda bugs me because I'll have to put down $15.00 to $20.00 for the DVD plus the $4.00 for the Rifftrax.  Ouch.

On the other hand when you riff movies like Glitter it only ends up costing me about $12.00 total for both the Rifftrax and the DVD.

Also, I think you guys tend to riff movies that really don't have a lot of riffing material.  I personally thought you were desperately stretching for good jokes on movies like Bourne Identity and Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Which shows me that just because a movie is popular doesn't mean that it should be riffed.  I realize that Rifftrax is a business but shouldn't the riffability of the movie be your number one priority?

Let me just say that I've purchased every single Rifftrax you guys have done up until Cloverfield.  It just astounded me that you guys thought that would make a hilarious Rifftrax.  So, I didn't buy it and I don't plan on ever buying it down the road.  I'm kinda glad I didn't buy it because from what I'm reading people seem to think you guys were stretching for jokes on that one too (which is exactly what I feared would happen).

Anyway, I'm sorry for being long winded.  I just figured this might be my only chance to let you personally know how I feel about this whole situation.  Thanks for reading this and caring enough to start this thread in the first place.  I'll always support Rifftrax but I hope that this philosophy of riffing movies just because their popular goes away.  Thank you.

James of L --

As we discovered on MST3K, tastes vary greatly.  And what one person loves is often something another person thinks is a stinkburger.

I'll just say we never set out to make a bad riff.  And believe it not, there is no simple formula for riffability. (If you know one, I'll pay good $$$ for it.)  We've been surprised in both directions.

And your post kind of demonstrates to me that you can't make everyone happy, much as we'd like to...

THE BOURNE IDENTITY was a few years old.

RAIDERS was many, many years old.

CLOVERFIELD was brand new, but it was quite different, for better or worse, than stuff we'd done before.

So we have two older movies, and one that isn't a standard sci-fi superhero movie (a flick some people hated, and some liked a lot, granted, but not the same as most blockbusters)...

And not one of those three fall into the exact category that started the angry forum guy off today.

What's a riffer to do?

(smiles, forgetting.)

That's such a SELLOUT argument.  :)

How feasible would it be for  you and Kevin doing a Rifftrax on your own?  By that, I mean, writing and recording away from San Diego.  Would the problem be in the recording process?  I have no idea how much it costs to rent a studio and whatnot.

That may be possible in the near future.

I know that we'd love to get more titles out there, and faster... but we also don't want to churn 'em out so fast that they're hack jobs.

I just noticed that today's threads have bumped me into Big Montana territory.

Something good has come from the day's zaniness after all.   :D

Soooo... I should keep holding my breath for DUNE??

I've turned 4 shades of blue already..

I'm even finishing up a script of the movie to ease you guy's pain :)

Re DUNE -- yes, it would make a great Rifftrax.  It's certainly not a matter of it being painful for us, since we're battle-scarred.  We did BATTLEFIELD EARTH, remember!

But alas, DUNE probably wouldn't sell very well.    And that's based on a lot of analysis of previous sales, etc.  Never say never, but...it probably won't happen soon.

Sorry to send you off to Mexico with a broken corazon.  (<--- high school Spanish)

BUT in terms of you writing a script for it yourself -- remember, DIY is always an option.  A lot of people who post here have proven that, and have their own viable riffing operations.   More power to anyone who does that, say I.

We're switching to All Spanish by 2009.   Taking a Berlitz weekend course to prepare.
