Meaning, in your opinion.

Quote from: doggans on February 14, 2008, 05:46:42 AMit was unnecessary, and cheapened the character

No, it didn't. Cheapening the character would be to have his personality rapidly changing as if he were bi-polar, and sticking him in crappy cartoon commercials for really bad candy.

You know, I really don't think those commercials are canon.

And the opinions of most people I've discussed the film with. Not everybody, but most people. But, yes, this is just an opinion.

Quote from: Isaac on February 14, 2008, 06:05:17 AMNo, it didn't.

As I just said, that was my opinion. And this is your opinion, which you are presenting as fact.

Again, I liked the film, but I didn't like the backstory. I'm willing to admit not everybody will agree with my view of the film or the elements of the film. I'm willing to agree to disagree, are you?

A handful of viewers is not "most". If a few people said that the whole back story of Citizen Kane was pointless, that doesn't constitute "most".

And I'm not comparing the back story of the 2005 film Charlie to the Kane back story. I'm just saying, a few people is not "most".

Quote from: GregMcduck on February 14, 2008, 06:14:18 AMGood job taking him completely out of context.

I don't think that was out of context. Out of context would be if I took out the "not everybody".

I said most people that I've discussed the film with. Not most people in the world. And, again, I acknowledged that it wasn't even everybody that I discussed the film with who agreed with me.

But it is the most. The most of the people he's discussed the film with.

You took him out of context to make it seem like he was refering to most of everybody in the world.

The backstory is pretty stupid once you realize... it doesn't have a resolution. Okay, his father fucking hugged him. So what? Is he living in the chocolate factory now? What? Is Willy no longer a freak? What was the whole point? I mean, if you have the same ending as the original, he lets Charlie's family live there too, then why did you need to have a backstory to explain why he doesn't like families? Just have him LIKE families and you don't need to explain anything. It's phony suspense to pretend the audience will think Charlie isn't getting the factory, like Bill thinking Gryffindor wouldn't win the house cup. It would have been better if he'd locked his father in the factory basement, put a big metal contraption on his head and made him eat chocolate all day long.

There's your plot for Saw V right there. :)

Ooh, he could make somebody eat a ton of chocolate to make the contraption with the NutriSystem Advanced package come down.
