God, Neil Patrick Harris sucks. If he hadn't picked Willy Wonka to riff, the remake would have been a shoe in for Rifftrax. Now it'll probably never happen because it would be too redundant, just like the movie was. Really, I have never seen a more pointless film. The only new stuff was in the flashbacks, which were fairly boring. Also Deep Roy is just disturbing as all hell. He sounds like a porn star and he looks like Peter Lorre in a Felini film. At least Planet of the Apes remade a movie which looked dated since it was basically an entire movie based on the color tan. Sure the original is a classic and the remake is not, but at least you didn't see there going, "Damn, I sure miss the 'Monkeys Do It' musical number."

I hereby condemn Neil Patrick Harris to appear in the next pointless Tim Burton remake of a good movie.

So, just in case you're serious, you're holding it against NPH for not requesting to riff a film that riffs itself?
You know, overall, I don't LIKE watching really bad films, with or without a 'trax. At least not films that I'm embarrassed to be seen renting.

And odd choices are kinda a trademark of guest riffers- Willard got a black and white, Bridgette got Gray's Anatomy, and Weird Al got Jurassic Park, which Mike may or may not have been avoiding due to it's "fan riffed" status.

I'm holding it against NPH for requesting to riff a classic whose remake needs to pay.

And it's not "really bad," it's just entirely pointless if you've seen the original, which damn near everyone has. You know pretty much everything that's going to happen. Except they replaced the golden geese with squirrels so they could make a testicle joke in a kid's movie. *sniff sniff* Sorry, thought I smelled Steven Spielberg.

Chaos

No, they "replaced" the golden geece with squirrels because they were squirrels IN THE BOOK. The only reason the original movie didn't have squirrels was because it would have been too hard without the wonders of CGI to film them and have them doing what they needed to do.

Do try to keep up, old chum.

(BTW, Willy Wonka is one of the 3 best RiffTrax EVER. I've never laughed so hard.)

Hated the Tim Burton version.

My Willy Wonka didn't have "daddy issues".

Dude NPH kicks ass. The fact that we wanted to be a guest riffer is awesome. Don't blame him for Tim Burton making a piece of crap. There are many movies that need to be riffed, that doesn't mean i blame others for their not getting riffed.

MSTJedi

I loved the Willy Wonka Rifftrax and Harris did a great job. Sure, his lines were probably for the most part already written for him, but he read them as if they were his own. Besides, gotta love any actor who was in Starship Troopers (another movie that deserves a Rifftrax). Or maybe that's just me.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is not a remake. Burton made a film that was a lot closer to the book than the first adaptation was - thus, a much better film. Tim Burton's film wasn't "pointless". It was much needed.

Another thing, both Planet of the Apes and Wonka were based on books. You know, those paper things with writing in them. Ever heard of 'em?

I think they changed a lot of things for no reason. I think they were really, really high throughout the production of the film. Just look at the boat ride scene.

No matter what anybody thinks, Willy Wonka deserved it. It deserved it badly.

Uh, technically, the version they riffed was the colorized version. There were a few "blue woman" jokes toward the end of the film.

Wonka has a special place in my heart for being among the first rifftrax i've seen... and for being good, and the movie for being downright awful.

By the way, your mandelbrot is backwards...

Huh. You know, sometimes we don't know about the book for a REASON. And maybe everybody has seen the original movie for a REASON. (It wasn't that good and it was that good, respectively.)

I meant more that it was a black and white ERA film. It's the oldest film to fall under the Rifftrax designation, I believe, unless Legend commentaries count. It seems that Willard wanted to kick it oldschool MST3K style for his visit.

It's not a mandelbrot.

Any visual relation to a mandelbrot is a result of smoke and mirrors.

Nothing to see here, move along...

The makers of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory butchered Dahl's book. And they had the nerve to give him sole credit for that mess of a screenplay.

Look, have you seen "Airplane!"? It was a funny movie that parodied a movie called Airport.

Now, some people have heard of Airport. Some people know it's connection to Airplane. Some people have seen it, and some of them have even enjoyed it.

But they remember "Airplane!"

If we could go back and have it re-done, I honestly don't know if a true- to- the- book Willy Wonka movie would have been better than what we got, but I'm pretty sure i wouldn't blindly trade the one we got for that one. Because the one we got was unique. In it's weirdness and wit, it outshined the book it was based on, at least in the general public eye.
And mind you, I HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK. You may be right! In fact, you're PROBABLY right! But true to the book or not, it's a classic. It's part of our culture!

Of course, I'm a big fat hipocrite, as I'd have Frankenstein remade to be more like the book in a SECOND. Thank you, Universal, for turning one of the most complex and tragic characters in literary history into a fuggin' ZOMBIE.

To call Tim Burton's Chocolate Factory closer to the book is to be dead wrong. Sure, it has squirrels instead of geese, but in the book, Wonka was a nutty but smart old man. In the movie, Wonka is an annoying manchild. Plus, there was none of this hokey backstory with Wonka's father in the book. I'd even go as far and say the changes made in the 70s Chocolate Factory (Charlie drinking the Fizzie Lifting drink, Slugworth, etc) actually improved the story, changing it from Charlie winning the factory in a deadly reality show-style game to Charlie earning the factory by his own means.

I really don't mind if people liked Tim Burton's Chocolate Factory, just never use "it's closer to the book" as a reason.

Not to nitpick but the fizzy lifting drink was in the book too.  I know because when we read it in fifth grade I had to read the swear word and here everyone giggle.    "Come down from there you silly ass."
