QuoteMoviehole got the chance to speak to director mink (Into the Sun) revealing that the upcoming "Mortal Kombat" movie is a "re-invisioning" of the franchise and is still in the early stages. "The Producers are working out their deals with the studio and arranging their financing," he said.

"Today's audience is a savvy involved group so the film must be A plus plus in every area in order to capture the magic of the first film," mink continued. "It is taking the entire concept to the next level across the board in every area visual design, story, cast, FX, photography and most importantly the fighting scenes. The original Mortal Kombat game was born a child of many visual loves by the creators at midway so this latest version borrows heavily from that pioneering spirit and must be thought out and executed at the highest level in order for it succeed in today's market place. This is no overnight task."

The director also stated that casting has yet to begin, making the rumor that Christopher Lambert would return as Rayden just that, a rumor. "First things first, is the way these larger projects need to be done. It is still in the business stages but once that is squared away all casting options will be explored along with the continued development of the best story line."

Magic of the first film? I must have missed it somewhere. Still, anything they make will probably be an improvement over that cesspool of a sequel, MK: Annihilation.
Killing me won't bring back your Goddamned honey!

Despite the fact that Paul WS Anderson directed it, I thought the first Mortal Kombat had some cheesy goodness to it.  The second one is rubbish though.  Casting Christopher Lambert in the new one? That's shooting for the stars...  ::)

I consider "Mortal Kombat" the best video game movie ever made ("The Wizard" notwithstanding).  Some might say "Tomb Raider," but I'd rather see MK ten times before watching TR again (and indeed I have).  And MK:Annihilation IS a TERRIBLE movie.  A "re-envisioning" of MK has potential I suppose.  Then again, I suppose anyone with ideals set as high as they're talking could potentially make anything worthwhile.

I hope they aren't just blowing smoke up our butts and are actually trying to make a good movie this time around. The first MK movie was pretty good even though they did take some license with the back story. There's some pretty interesting story elements in the past few games, so any movie will have to at least surpass that.

Looks like there might be some progress being made on this...and there's definitely more than just a little re-envisioning going on:

Okay, this just surfaced and it doesn't seem to be finished film (done by the guy who did the "Fame" remake, I think) so it could be a teaser, a pitch for a new game, a pitch for a try at the series or something else but wow. It looks very slick. (I think that's Michael Jai "Black Dynamite" White and that's certainly Jeri Ryan in the clip, so whatever it is, it wasn't made in a garage.)

I just watched this and was headed here to post about it when you beat me to it.

Very slick.  I wonder if this is actually being made into a movie, or if they made this to try and get some buzz going and some studio backing to finance a film.  A serious, gritty MK film could kick all kinds of butt.

...Wow. That was impressive. I'd go see that.
