Here I am right on que, ready to interrupt another great argument, by saying!...

Giullermo, should do a good job, personally I wish Jackson could do it. But after he finished LoTR and King Kong, he was tired of directing big movies. So as long as he is producing I will be happy.

Oh, and to contribute to this fantastic bashing, I love LoTR, and I wouldn't consider myself illiterate in cinema. For goodness sake, I have the complete Buster Keaton collection, I have almost every version of the original star wars trilogy. I have the Humphrey Bogart collection, the Errol Flynn collection. And I still think that LoTR are three of the greatest movies ever made. Sure they have their problems, but every movie does...except Rocketman of course.

Oh and subtitled movies are a little jarring in the beginning, but my brain usually adjusts to where I don't even notice I'm reading anymore.

Oh and Sarcasm, Imrahil, I'm just going to throw out a suggestion for what your tag team should be called...The Fantastic Sarcastic Forum Finisher Tactic. It sorta has a ring to it. Of course you don't have to use it. But if you do, I release all copyright to you both. The only thing I want is the rights to the animated series.

I hate subtitled movies because I can't actually watch the actors ACTING, I can only hear them ACTING. I mean... I can't WATCH them acting, I can only HEAR them acting. And in a language I don't understand, which defeats the purpose. I can tell they're acting good. Just not really appreciate it. Movies are a visual medium, hence silent movies. However, there's no such thing as a pictureless movie. But that's what subtitles achieve. I mean what, are you going to argue that subtitles are the way a movie was meant to be seen? Granted, I would rather hear Jackie Chan's voice, but he only sometimes dubs his own movies. And for the record, I like reading, and I even knows how. Just not when I'm trying to watch a movie. Subtitles were never intended by Jesus.

actually i dont think we truly CAN tell if they are acting good (or well even).  the fact its in another language and another culture that we arent a part of, means that there is all sorts of subtext we dont get and etc.  Its why so few comedies ever come to the big screen from abroad.  drama and love and war people mostly get but comedy is something extremely cultural based.  and please spare me the indignation that you "get" some other cultures sense of humor.  How would you know?  You may think something is funny, but its hard to know without intimate knowledge of a language wether or not your really laughing for the same reasons.

While I agree that we lose a lot of subtleties in watching an actor perform in a foreign language, I don't think it's necessarily true that we can't tell about the quality of their acting.  If an actor can convey emotion to an audience, and affect them, I think that actor's doing pretty well, despite the barriers of understanding there might be.

but how much subtext do we lose due to those barriers?  we may get one feeling from them when they arent trying to portray that at all.  example.  A friend of mine was watching 7 samurai with me ( i was making them) and commented that EVERY line was spoken in an angry manner.  This cannot be possible but in a way the japanese language often sounds that way to our ears even though it may not be so.  im not saying we dont know anything about whats going on but we do lose enough subtext that to have an actual objective opinion on it is impossible.

Kevin Murphy would be smacking everyone up if he read this thread.

I don't really hate "subtitled movies." I just don't like subtitles. They give me a headache. The movies are fine. Maybe great. Probably better if you're not a stupid American like me. But I am actually content being a stupid American. It's my birthright.

Actually, they should just have Malcolm McDowell narrate all subtitles. That way you don't have to miss the acting, but you don't have to hear a bad dub either. Problem solved!

Phantom of Krankor

Very interesting. I liked Pan's Labyrinth ( I thought Hellboy was just okay... ), but I LOVED Blade 2. Toro is a great director. Let's hope he does a good job, and not go off on too much of his own visual style.
I am Ambassador Phantom, from the planet Krankor! I am rapidly approaching your planet... in the warship, which you have just seen. I will arrive tomorrow night at precisely eight o'clock. At that time I shall make my wishes known to you. You will obey them... or die! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!

bratpop

Huh... well you're free to like Blade 2, but it's something I think the media ought to stop using as part of del Toro's credentials implying he'd be a good director for The Hobbit. Yeah, it's a movie. And it's directed. But it's fairly ridiculous. And also it stars Ron Perlman and there really ought to be a limit on that kind of thing. If Ron Perlman plays Bilbo, I quit.

Quit what?  Are you working on The Hobbit?  Are you quitting life?  You must finish the contextual fragment... I MUST KNOW THESE THINGS!
