Finally got my disc today and guess what? It is a pressed disc and not a DVD-R!  The wait doesn't seem as bad now. I just hope they do it with the rest of them. I would pay for factory pressed discs over download to burns or DVD-Rs.

How can you tell? Is it the color of the burned side or something? I mean they specifically said it would be a DVD-5 (and I assume that was a typo meaning DVD-R, they're so close on the keyboard).  Or maybe that's what they do for their "normal" stuff, perhaps Joel got a deal on some professional burning. That would be nice...

I guess by DVD-5 , the meant the smaller 4.7GB disc, not necessarily a DVD-R.  I have a lot of older DVDs that are the single layer type.

Well, this is good news, a pressed disk will last much longer than a DVD-R, and will be more compatible with more players.

Maybe that's why they were talking about setting a record for authering?  For DVD-Rs I figured it was just hype since anyone these days can shoot something, auther and burn it in a day, but making masters and pressing out disks in such a short time would be impressive...

MrTorso

Yes the color is one way to tell. Pressed DVD-5s are silver and DVD-9s are gold.   When they refer DVD-5 on the DVD WAGON site I think they use it to try to sound better than what you actually get. Most people haven't got a clue about the DVD-5, DVD-9, nomenclatures.  It is just industry talk for approximate  capacities. You have DVD-5 which is your standard 4.7gb single layer discs. DVD-9 is the 8.5 gb Dual layer discs, then there are DVD-10s which are double sided single layer discs and DVD-18s which are double sided dual layers.

I am sure they had no choice but to send these out to a replicator due to the number of the orders. If it is going to be the norm for all CT releases I will pay the extra $3 and wait for it. I trust pressed discs to last longer than burns.

Well, if it EVER arrives (was not in mail today), then I guess I will be happy.

Yes, DVD-5 means single layer. DVD-9 is dual layer. Or maybe it just means it's five better. Did people just think they meant DVD-R?

It says DVD-5 for ANYTHING you put in the basket. They don't have an inventory of their catalog. You order anything else from them and you will get  a DVD-R they don't manufacture single pressed discs on demand. DVD Chuck Wagon couldn't handle the amount of orders so they simply went to a third party and had them stamped.

If they continue to have prefessionally pressed disks, I'd be willing to fork over the extra $2.99 and have them mail it to me... but if it's just gonna be a plain old DVD-R, I'll download it and do it myself.  Gotta figure demand for each release will be huge, so maybe they will continue to have them made...

I e-mailed them asking about the pressed discs and this is what I got back:

QuoteHello Ian,

We have arranged to produce pressed discs for Cinematic Titanic releases,
when they first go up for sale. So each time a new title goes online, our
DVDs are likely to be pressed. As time goes on for each title, we may
transition them to "burn on demand" which would be DVD-Rs. This probably
won't happens until the DVD has been listed for several months.

So as long as you order the titles when they are still new, you are likely
to get pressed DVDs.

I hope this answers your question, please let me know if I can be of
further assistance.

Regards
John

Now if they would just provide an official cover to print out.

I wonder how many disks they ordered in the first run?  Since most companies that do DVD production require runs of at least 1000 disks, it makes sense that after the order rate drops off they would switch to DVD-Rs.  Although once the master die is made additional runs should be cheaper, but then they would be stuck storing disks that might take a long time to sell...

Very happy to get a pressed disc, but I also want a cover I can print.
