If someone wants to edit out just the commercials, convert them and get the files to me... I'll insert them into my DVD copy of the original program, and make sure that the length works properly with the Rifftrax once it's released.

At least that way, the quality of the Holiday Special will look alright. The commercials will still be pixelated of course. The other option is to sort of shrink the commercials to a size where they don't look too horrible. The switch between the show itself and a small commercial surrounded by black space may be a little distracting though.

Anyway, i'm really just more interested in watching the goofy thing. So the whole reauthor is going to have to sit on the backburner 'till after the holidays. But if anyone wants to wait until i get my act together, i'd be happy to share then.

Its because your taking a highly compressed FLV file that is 320x240 and blowing it up to DVD resolution 720x480. Its going to look pixelated no matter what...Considering the source is a multigeneration VHS tape and the Google video is highly compressed, we pretty much have to accept the fact it wont look all that great on a tv.

I used DVD flick and the .mp4 file from Lake Video. The DVD came out better than I expected. It doesn't look pixelated as I expected I watched it on a 35 inch SDTV and a basic DVD player.

Yeah, I used a DVD on the special without the riff and will be using another on Monday. Brand name blanks ones are about 25 cents each and I needed to replace the one I had (which wasn't working for some reason, I don't think I ever watched it)

Just so you know...there is no difference in quality between the FLV file and the MP4. I think some folks are under the impression that the MP4 file is better quality. It isn't. Both the FLV and MP4 for SWHS are approx the same size and both are 320x240 resolution.

MP4 is actually an AVI file and the MP4 is its 'container'.
MP4 filename is popular because of QuickTime.

I know, I was just too lazy to go into my temp folder to get the .flv file. I just wanted to accurately describe the steps I took.

To everyone that I am sending DVDs to:

They are going out today. You all should have them by Monday.

I stand by my earlier comment about you:

If the DVD copy I get has the same commercials and better quality, I'll try to add the scroll and synch it with the Lake Video copy.

The moment I see "DVD burner" or "FLV file" my brain shuts down, and as far as I know reauthoring something means that your name appears twice on the cover of a paperback novel. @_@

Did we get confirmation that they are, in fact, riffing the fan-made opening crawl?

AmandaGal

The product info mentions the crawl so I assume that even if they aren't riffing it, it'll mess up the synch if not there.

Then again, you know what they say about assumptions :)

I don't know if anyone has done this yet, but If someone started a Rifftrax Trading topic or something we could see who needs a copy.

I just got the dvd of the version they riffed, with crawl and commercials.  And i have no problem sending a few copies out.

My best guess is that they used the scrolling text as an indicator for when to pause/unpause (as soon as the scrolling text leaves the screen press pause on your video player). This would only be important for those who watch the video and rifftrax separately. For those who re-author, its not going to make a difference for syncing.

AmandaGal

I was hoping it was something like that Gammer.  The scroll isn't that interesting.  I really can't see them "riffing" it persay.  Hopefully the higher quality edition will work just fine.  I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I was also surprised with the end quality of my conversion from mp4 to dvd using Nero Vision Express. It looked like an old VHS tape, with very little pixelization.

Wouldn't it be easier just to re-enact the entire broadcast, commercials included, and put that on DVD?
