There's a solution for everyone who is complaining that it's illegal. . .  don't buy the Rifftrax.  Oh wait, that'd be too hard. It's easier to complain.

I think you should go cry to George Lucas, see if he cares :)

QuoteHe wrote the Christmas special a long time ago,

He actually didn't write it-- he only gave a little bit of guidance in the beginning, as he was knee-deep in Empire, etc.  I don't think his name is even on the forward credits, not that I can blame him.

It does conveniently allow him to pretend it didn't happen.   ;D  I still remember reading his quote about this special one of the few times he acknowledged it's existence.  "If I had time and a sledgehammer, I'd track down every one of those bootleg tapes"

Is it really a bootleg if it was broadcast for free on TV?

AmandaGal

I generally consider a bootleg something that is distributed unofficially, without licenses and such.

That's the way it's always been referred to in music.  A "bootleg CD" is not necessarily illegally copied tracks, but tracks that were never released or concerts.  To me a television show would be akin to a concert bootleg. :)

Okay, so I'm a Bootlegger*. But I'm not a Pirate.

QuoteBootlegging is often incorrectly referred to as piracy but there are important differences between the two terms. Bootlegging is trafficking in recordings that the record companies have not commercially released, whereas piracy is the illegal copying/sale of recordings that are (or have been) available commercially or are planned/scheduled for commercial release.

..."Bootlegging" is sometimes also used to refer to the unlicensed file sharing of copyrighted music but the term piracy is usually more appropriate...

*And maybe I'm not even a bootlegger, I just went to a very popular search engine and clicked download. But even if I'm at the end of the bootlegging line, I can see how one would call it "bootlegging"

I stand by my earlier comment about you:

"You sir, are a steely-eyed missle man."

I can already see RVR II nervously looking at the calendar, seeing the date on his plane tickets and getting anxious on how fast I can get the DVD turned around!

I tried to burn the show with DVD flick, and I also tried using the FLV file and converting it to AVI
Both copies came out a touch pixelated. Am I doing something wrong or is it because the original is bad quality??

Since there probably isn't a chance of people getting these before the RiffTrax is out, I will go the extra mile and test its compatibility with RiffTrax myself before spreading it. (I may even insert the Google Video intro to it if I can manage that).

Its because your taking a highly compressed FLV file that is 320x240 and blowing it up to DVD resolution 720x480. Its going to look pixelated no matter what.
Considering the source is a multigeneration VHS tape and the Google video is highly compressed, we pretty much have to accept the fact it wont look all that great on a tv.

All these terms imply stealing. I like to think of it as rummaging through Lucas' Trash. :^)
