I'd like to take this oprotunity to thank Kevin Murphy- if he hadn't suggested the pay-for-a-more-deserving-movie deception in an interviw on the volume 4 (I think it was) MST3K boxed set, I wouldn't have thought to do it.

He also brought it up in his book, A Year At The Movies.  If memory serves me correctly, he also said something along the lines of "What I did was illegal.  Don't do it.  Or, in the very least, if you get caught, don't tell people that I was the one who told you to do it."
I've done that for years....

Thing is, I buy stuff there in the theater (if I'm only going to see one movie, I don't).   I also talk up any of the movies I see that are good and I know for a fact that every movie I've seen for free (except The Master of Disguise) I've gotten at least one other person to see it who wasn't even considering it.

And The Master of Disguise I didn't even mean to watch.  I just knew that the reviews had been horrible for it and I wanted to see if Brent Spiner had actually gotten himself involved in a movie worse than Dude, Who Stole My Car?.   It was one of those stadium seat theaters so I stood in the alcove for a little while....but everytime I tried to leave something would happen in the movie that was so stupid I got sucked back in to watching....ended up seeing all of it while standing there.

Good gravy, guys! I was reading through the posts in this thread and was SHOCKED :o to read that some of you actually go to movies BECAUSE you've heard they stink! Granted, you don't actually give money to these pictures by paying for better/more worthy ones, but still... are you into masochism? ;) My reasons for seeing some movies is rather simplistic, THE PREMISE OF THE MOVIE will sometimes get me into the theater. A few examples:
"Battlefield Earth" - CAVEMEN FLYING HARRIER JETS!!!
"Godzilla" '98 - A GIANT, CGI LIZARD STOMPING THROUGH NEW YORK!
"Transformers" - GIANT, CGI ROBOTS WAILING ON EACH OTHER!
"Dragon Wars" - GIANT, HOT, CGI DRAGON-ON-DRAGON ACTION!

These are just a few, but it gives ya an idea of what I'm talkin' 'bout. I'm rarely disappointed when I go to a movie with expectations as low as these, but I have been. "Dragon Wars" was more little, cold, CGI dragons-on-military action with a giant snake chasing a few humans. If I wanted to see a movie about a giant snake, I'd watch "Anaconda", DAG-NAB-IT! (A movie I went to because I wanted to see A GIANT SNAKE EATING PEOPLE!) Don't get me wrong! I'm not saying these movies are fantastic or anything like that! I had a looooong list of problems with "Transformers" (Bumblebee especially upset me! :grr:), but where else are you gonna get GIANT, CGI ROBOTS WAILING ON EACH OTHER! ;D
"How would I go about creating a half-man, half-monkey-type creature?"
"I'm sorry, that would be playing God."
"God shmod! I want my monkey-man!"

I saw Harry Potter because my girlfriend-at-the-time's little sister wanted to see it and I deduced that if I took the little sister to see a movie she wanted to see it would give me extra brownie points with my then-girlfriend. All I got was yelled at for not finding a way to get her out of work so she could go to.

The strangest reason why I saw a movie would be for these few reasons:

1. It was based on *insert name of favorite franchise here* such as Street Frighter, Mortal Kombat, Scooby Doo, etc. etc. I think you get the idea. What was I thinking that these movies were any good!?

2. I volunteered to go see CINO (Catwoman In Name Only) starring Halle Berry as the sacrificial "Ticket" bearer for a group of pals at a messageboard who didn't want to see it themselves but wanted to know what it was like. I was extremely bitter for several days afterwards but at least I didn't pay money out of my pocket since I got a free movie pass from purchasing the Batman TAS boxed set.

3. Which brings me to another of those free movie passes. I got one for the first AVP movie in the Predator DVD I purchased so just for the hell of it I decided to go see the movie since I wasn't paying for it with my own money.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

I didn't have a/c in my last apartment so on the hottest day of the summer I went to see Black Sheep (NOT the Chris Farly film) just so I could enjoy the a/c.  The movie was MEGA crap (to quote J. Jonah Jameson).
