Strangest reason you ever saw a movie?

Zardoz!

I went to see "Superman Returns" and thought it was good. I normally wouldn't have seen it except for one thing:

Bill O'Reilley was saying it was a "lib'rul attack on superman" and that they were making him a gay, anti-american superman. Ann Coulter said they were making a feminist movie because Lois Lane had had sex with more than one man and was portrayed as a single mother.

I said to myself "Wow! if scum like Ann Coulter hate this movie I have to go see it!"

I guess seeing a movie because far right colostomy bags hated it was a weird reason to see a movie.

Likewise I saw "300" more or less because Iran was bitching about it and claiming it offended them. Hey, if something offends a fascist theocratic state that is ruled under 7th century laws and morals I'll go see it just to show support for people who make movies that offend people like that!"

So, sometimes I go see movies just because certain people bitch about them. Have you ever seen a movie for a weirder reason?
Everyone who believes in justice, racial equality and free speech should support Duane "the Dog" Chapman and boycott anyone who takes action against him.

Chaos

I recently saw the Pacifier just to see how bad it really was. Generally 60% of the movies that I see are seen purely based on morbid curiosity and a certain sense of sadistic, self-inflicted torment.

... I've got issues.

I let my friend talk me into seeing The Village because he was convinced it was about Pennsylvania folk legends, and he is arbitrarily proud of anything to do with his native state. About an hour and a half later I felt like strangling someone with my bare hands until I felt better.

I saw Chicago on a date.

That's strange enough for me.

:D :D  I'm pretty sure thats the same reason anyone else in Pennsylvania saw this movie.  My friends went to go see this and swore up and down that it was about this creepy community that had built a bunch of houses in the middle of nowhere, about 20 minutes from where we live.  Its all I heard for the next 3 months.

I see movies because of my life mission (it's in my signature).

I had to see Sharkboy & Lava Girl because my husband's family is fascinated by 3-D technology.

I remember it like yesterday: We drove up to the theater to meet everyone there, and my Father-In-Law (God rest his soul) handed each of us 3-D glasses that were gender specific. My husband got the grey "Sharkboy" glasses and I got the pink "Lava Girl" glasses. Right then, I felt this icey feeling in my gut and, deep within their eyes, I could tell my husband and Father In Law were getting the same feeling. It didn't help that the glasses were the standard red/blue lens fare. Quite unlike the glasses they let us wear to the Dinosaur 3-D show at the Smithsonian some years back which, despite the stupidity of the movie, was AWESOME 3-D and the glasses were fascinatingly completely clear. You could even watch the movie without the glasses and it still looked normal. Unlike Sharkboy and Lava Girl, which cheaply looked horrid if you took your glasses off.

So, needless to say, my poor Father In Law apologized profusely after the movie for making us watch it.

Other than when I specifically made a point of seeing Xanadu opening day because of how God-awful they said it was?

Maybe that I saw The Pirate Movie at a free advanced showing.  Some promotions guy came up to us at a mall and gave us passes and one-sheets for the film.  Figured it was worth a look.  It wasn't really.

Was on a date with a cute college co-ed at an age where I really should've been too old to be dating college coeds. After dinner, it was very chilly, and while waiting for the car to warm, we spontaneously started going at it. Both of us being too far away from where we each lived, and not knowing how far this was going to go, we decided to see a movie. It was the remake of Texas Chansaw Massacre. The theater was relatively deserted, and we were alone in the back doing stuff to each other that was arrest worthy, serious "dear Penthouse Forum I never thought these letters were true but something happened to me the other day and I just HAD to let you know" type stuff, then after the movie finally decided to get a hotel room.

Oh...STRANGEST reason you ever saw a movie. I thought it "most awesome reason." Sorry. Never mind.

Same here.  My college was doing a free showing of Disturbia, and when I showed up and hopped into line, they gave me a can of Red Bull and a movie poster.  So I essentially went to see a movie because I wanted some Red Bull and a movie poster that didn't actually look all that bad.

Halfway through the movie, I threw out the poster.  Man, that was a crappy movie.  The Red Bull wasn't even worth it, either.

Edit: I also recall a time when I went to see a movie with my sister because it was Free Popcorn Day at the theaters for everybody with a membership card with the theater, and she wanted to not only get free popcorn, but she wanted more points on her card towards a free movie ticket.  She paid for everything, so who was I to complain?

Cosmic Muse

No joke, I saw the first Scooby Doo movie because I had heard that Matt Lillard made an excellent Shaggy, which he did but the movie was absolute crap!
Being a genocidal maniac is not one of my turn ons.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

That's not really all that bad a reason, actually.  It's probably not too far off of the reasons people have for seeing some of the movies that they've stumbled on.  Hell, the only reason I saw Brazil was because Michael Palin was in it.  And as it turns out, that movie became the reason I started to actually think when I started watching movies, hence sparking my interest in "badness" and eventually throwing me into the MST3k fandom and without that, I never would have found this forum!

... Goddammit, Michael Palin.

... Sharkboy & Lava Girl ...

Yeah that movie is pretty horrid ... let that be a lesson to all Director / Writer / Producers ... your kids ideas suck and should never be made into movies!

that said, yeah I felt pretty dumb buying that DVD (for the Robert Rodriguez commentary obviously), even if the clerk assumed I was getting it for a child they must of assumed I had terrible tastes, lol.

When I was seven, I was invited to a focus group screening of the 1993 Dennis the Menace movie. Is it odd that the Dennis in the movie is 90 times more of a menace then he is in the comic strips?

A small list of movies i saw for strange reasons

1.) snakes on a plane to see how bad it was, with the intent of laughing at the movie.
2.) The Da Vinci Code because of the controversy it stirred.
3.) 300 to see the gratuitous violence, and bonus of extreme slow motion, with a group of friends, once again with the intent of laughing at the movie.

I get dragged to movies by groups of people, only because i know that if the movie sucks, I'll have a good time anyway.
