D'uh...  ::)

I have both on my shelf.  There is a time difference.  The PAL version is 2:26:07 while the NTSC is 2:32:12.  Not sure yet what was cut.  In addition to that, they also used alternate takes any time someone said "Philosopher's Stone" or "Sorcerer's Stone" on screen.  Not sure if that adds to the time differences at all.  I haven't examined them close enough to tell you all the precise differences.

The Canadian version is NTSC and I'll have to check the runtime on it.

I'm thinking I'd better get the US version just to be safe.

Indomitus

Whoa... Is there the possibillity of an alternate NTSC cut?

gammer

I just checked and my "Canadian" copy of Philosopher's Stone is 152 mins.

This would suggest that it has the same runtime as the US copy of Sorcerer's Stone.

Anyone know if there is a difference between the Sorcerer's Stone (USA) DVD and the Philosopher's Stone (UK, Canada) DVD?
I'm pretty sure the only difference is the title, but just want to be sure. Don't want to find out the hard way like with Fantastic 4

That's certainly well within the time difference from just the NTSC/PAL conversion, so hopefully that's all it is, but I will be comparing the 2 anyway to see if there is any differences that I can detect that would significantly effect the timing of the riffs.

Not that I'm... uh... biased or anything (;)), but this may not have been a good idea for a riff, considering where RiffTrax wants to go with fan riffing. Stepping on the toes of a forum-run riff project that has been known about by several members of the staff, and in the works for months, is not necessarily the best way to get people excited about doing their own fan riffs.

Hey, you know, maybe it will work out, and everybody will want to listen to both to see the differences. Then again, it might just make nobody except for the contributors give a crap about ours. A few months down the road, nobody will remember that we were working on it long before you guys, and we'll be accused of either lameness or copying.

Ouch.

I'd be willing to bet that RiffTrax had this movie picked before they even realized there was a Fan riff being made for it.

Not according to BathTub.

Also, Chris has spoken with someone from the RiffTrax staff at length about the project. Quite a while ago, and just recently, too. They were not unaware of us.

I don't think the fact that a bunch of people on the forum were doing a film should stop Mike from riffing it, especially one that's been as requested as Harry Potter, it's obviously been on the short list for a while now.  I don't think that they are heading  as far into fan riffing as you think they are, Rifftrax will always be about Mike's trax, they pay the bills and keep the beer flowing

Not to be cold hearted but the fact of the matter is, not a lot of people cared about your riff in the first place...(wow, I sound like such an ass)
Most people are here for Mike & co's riffs only and a lot of them won't even bother with the Mike solo ones, they're not really going to bother with ones by a bunch of people they don't know...

I'm sure that you could get a few hundred downloads from people on the forums, but you've got to remember, most people buying rifftrax don't read the forums...

I'm not trying to make a big deal about this. I'm also not trying to say they don't have a right to riff whatever movie they want. It IS their company. I'm just saying it might not have been the best choice, given all of the available movies. It actually HASN'T been requested nearly as much as some other movies, but it was requested by the people on this forum that we from the forum riff it... so we did.

And let me just say that I know more about where RiffTrax is going with fan riffs, and leave it at that for now.

I don't think you sound like an ass, but you DO come across pretty harsh, considering I was just saying "I'm not positive this was a good decision." How would you feel if you had spent months working extremely hard on something, and suddenly FOUR DAYS before it is ready to be sent out, another company announces that they will be releasing the exact same thing two days later... but they only decided to do it a month and a half ago, and recorded it 2 weeks ago. Put yourself in my shoes for a second, and I think you'll be surprised how UNconfrontational I am being.

And yes, I'm well aware that it took us way longer than it should have to edit the thing and get it out (a process which Chris is getting way better at now that he has the right software and isn't using 4 separate recording tracks anymore - he finished the last 45 minutes of the movie in a single day), but that is the price you pay for only having one person doing the sound editing in their spare time out of love, instead of however many people RiffTrax has on staff who do it for a living 8 hours a day.

To be honest, I wasn't planning on giving the fan riff a listen.  If anything, I might have waited and seen some reviews of it before deciding to download it.  But now, I will probably download it and give it a listen just to compare it to the official Rifftrax version.

My prediction: Rifftrax = Awesome!, FanRiff = some funny jokes, but probably mostly lame.  Sorry, just not a big fan of "fan fiction"  I do have to give you guys credit for attempting this in the first place.  It is a pretty big fan project.

I don't think Mike was intentionally stepping on anybody's toes. (If I understand correctly, doesn't Mike have final say over what films are riffed?)

I just hope that there aren't too many jokes that are similar.  You would think that over the course of a 2 1/2 hour movie, there would be certain scenes that have obvious riffs that might pop up in both versions.  I don't wanna hear any "Mike stole my gag" comments.   ;)

Chaos

Well, considering that they recorded their riff 2 weeks ago, and the only people that have heard our riff so far are me, Chris, Brian, and Fig, it would be impossible for them to "steal" any of our jokes. It would also be petty of us to suggest that they did... not to mention foolish.

And yes, I think that at least some sections of the movie lend themselves to certain jokes, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are at least a few jokes that show up in both versions. I just hope that WE are not accused of copying anybody either. We specifically tried to steer away from "staple" RiffTrax jokes when we were editing the script and performing the riff, because we don't want to be seen as copycats.

But seriously, you should really give ours a listen on Sunday... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

I'm sorry.  I thought there was a work-in-progress version that was released at one point.  That was the basis of my suggestion that Mike might have "stolen" some of your jokes.

I will download and listen to it this weekend.   :)

You know what? I forgot all about how Chris released a beta sample. We've been so busy working on what comes next, that it completely slipped my mind. :)

I just got done watching the rough cut of the final recording last night. Some of the stuff changed since the preview, but a lot of it is still in there. I'm still fighting with Chris to try to get him to put back one particular ad-lib joke that got cut. ;)
