What about a freebee?

Since I have all the Rifftrax, there's nothing for me to gain from this suggestion at all, but there DOES seem to be some benefit to giving away free material to hook new customers.

Now that the Rifftrax library is fairly extensive, might it be time to pick a good Riff, something representative of Rifftrax's best efforts, and give it away for free? Give away one in hopes of selling the other forty-something? Just a thought I had and wanted to kick around a little. :^)

That might be a good idea, though the free sample clips might be enough to grab some.

Something like the Nestor riff, since it was so short, would probably make the best freebee for them, considering that one is only $.99 as is.  If they could find some kind of tv special that's been put on dvd and would be widely available and riff it you might draw in some people that way.

Well.. I'm a Firm Believer that 'You Get What You Pay For.." ::)

Just thinking out loud, it's not like they need to sell me on the idea.  You don't need to give the first one free to someone who's already a junkie.   :speechless:  Gimmie the riffs man, you know I'm good for it.

I Think this idea has some weight to it, but to someone who is more familiar with the MST3k style Riff's and not the MP3 synching way that it is now, the idea might back-fire a bit.

I don't remember us being told though....  I may have missed it but I found out after the fact while looking for something on ViewAskew

First I heard about that, since I only discovered Rifftrax this year over the summer.  But that does show that they've at least considered it.

Yeah it was some sort of cross promotion with Quick Stop Entertainment.

I think if they were going to offer a free sample riff it should be with some sort of public domain movie. One that's available on google video or something. Like Night of the Living Dead. Well, maybe not NOTLD. That riff was terrible. But something like it.

yup... they've done tons of specials here ... Halloween for free (w purchase of legend dvd), nester for free (when you clicked the Mike picture on the main page), cocktails .99 for limited time, star wars bundle, road house, fifth element, notld, plan 9 for cheaper price of 1.99 to early adapters (although road house and fifth element now cost the full price), ALL mike, kevin, bill rifftraxs for cheaper price of 2.99 to early adapters (although they now cost the full price)... not to mention the various exclusive autograph editions of mike's legend DVDs or the lowed cost of virtually all of their DVDs (which are now regular editions)

... the lesson can be a bit of a hard pill to swallow, basically you missed out on several sales. However if you subscribe to the email newsletter you'll probably be a bit more apt to catch the next sales.

my .02 ... 1. the free samples should be enough to help your decisions. 2. paypal makes the world go round ... i'm a bit surprised some people don't have an account yet.

.. geez that was a long rant, next time I'll just copy paste like I do my vcr rant ;) ...
Also, welcome to the forums ;D

edit... theres like 2 of these threads lol, I got confused... will post the quote in a sec

forgive the F-up on my part Pak ... but still same general idea... kinda

Hi Guys,

We loved MST3K and looks like we're going to love Rifftrax as well.  My wife and I viewed several of your samples and we were cracking up.

I was wondering if you've experimented with a lower price.  (I read the earlier thread about price for older movies.)  I would like to buy many of your riffs to play with DVDs I already have, and it adds up.  I would probably buy 20 if they were 99 cents each.  Maybe try selling one of them, not an oldie, but something big and modern like The Matrix, for a buck and see what happens.

There are numerous examples where people have cut the price in half for digital downloads and sold well more than twice as many as a result.

Also, you know, I'm just a little leery of paying through yet another payment system, etc.  I'm already up on iTunes and I would like to be able to buy Rifftrax through the iTunes store like I buy music and the occasional show.  It's painless, and easy to find and play as well.

Just a thought, I'll buy some in any case, and... good luck.

I've signed up for the e-mail newsletter twice.  Haven't received squat yet.

good point ... you had to be a forum member to realize some of the price changes (ie; when the mike, kevin, bill riffs went to 4.00) ... but hey at least you were an early adapter and saved money (which is more than I can say for karl (the person I quoted)

forgive the double post (hey if I didn't like discussing advertising and marketing I wouldn't have spent 4-years studying it ;) )

to go further on what Pak said... I definitely like the idea of a free trax promotion! I'm just a simple fan posting on the boards but the riff certificates obviously allow for this and giveaways to select groups would be an interesting experiment.

I just thought the way that Karl said it was slightly wrong in that it devalues the product, .99 is too cheap because I've always felt that 2.99 was the sweet spot in pricing. Also, a permanent free trax kinda devalues the price too. Sales should be temporary, thats why they're sales. Now that my foot is presumably out of my mouth I think I'll leave the pricing ideas to the experts at rifftrax to figure out, they do a pretty damn good job in my opinion :)

I've been a member longer than the $3.99 three-riffer price increase and the Star Wars prequel bundle, but was never notified by any newsletter.  The only way I knew about them was from the front page of the website or the forum.  So of course this now requires me to ask...

Has anyone ever received a newsletter?  When was the last one?

To remain on topic... I think the free samples and special promotions are plenty enough to convince someone to part with a mere couple of bucks.  If not, giving them an entire free RiffTrax probably wouldn't either.  It'd be like Homer at Hickory Farms.
