Wow... I really, really like both Waking Life and The Exorcist. Saw 'em both in the theaters and own 'em both on DVD. It's always interesting when people hate the movies that i like, go figure. Oh well... i'm not gonna' loose any sleep over it! Just thought i'd chime in though~

ditto to Waking Life.  I like the cool animation like he did later in A Scanner, Darkly, but it was just too pretentious.  I never finished it.

I can only remember one time ever walking out of a theater in the middle of a film. It was 1986, and I got free passes for the new Burt Reynolds movie Heat. It was awful.

Can't actually say I hate Waking Life because I haven't seen it.  Maybe someday I'll give it a shot.  I don't mind Exorcist.  Nothing special far as I'm concerned, but I can watch it.  Best part of that movie for me was hearing the story of Alice Cooper going to see the film with Linda Blair, and ending up sitting behind some idiot who wouldn't stop talking.  Imagine being back in the day when people were still scared shitless by that movie, being the rude guy annoying everyone in the theater, then suddenly getting a tap on the shoulder, looking back, and seeing Linda Blair's face an inch away as she growls "SHUT UP!!!"  Bet that guy wet himself   :D

I normally like linklatters films even slackers but me and my mate came out of waking life like shellshock victims.  ;D

We had to go see panic room after as a sorbet to clear the pallete.

You know my sister did that to the friend of somebody she babysat for.

The parents and their friend returned home and my sister was watching VH1. The friend sat down a said "Hey this song was the big song at my school disco just before I went to university"

My sister responded with "Hey I was born 5 years after this song came out" :D

I have a nearly preternatural ability to make it through the worst movie, and have never walked out at a theater.  I've been known to laugh, albeit at "inappropriate" times, in turgid dramas, andcetera, but walk out?  INCONTHEIVABLE!

I've gonged a couple movies at home though.  The first that comes to mind is GLITTER.  Words cannot describe how #$%!ing much I hate that movie.  My friend Josh and I brought it back from the video store we worked at and watched it one hungover Sunday morning thinking it would be SOOO bad that it'd be amazingly funny and wonderful.  Inadvertently great like COOL AS ICE or KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM, but IT WAS NOT.  Just plain old sucks.  My quick review?  It's like someone puking into your mouth.

Imagine my horror when the riff was announced.  I swear, I almost cried.  And now?  Well, now I own a copy of that steaming pile.  Curse you Mary Jo!  I blame you!!!

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."  I got fifteen minutes into it and I just couldn't take it anymore.  I got further into "Heaven's Gate,."  "Hudson Hawk," and "Waterworld," disasters all, but when  Gilliam falls, he falls hard.

I think Fear and Loathing is one of those movies that doesn't work unless you've read the book.  Which might just be a sign that it's not a good movie. That said, I loved it.

Meh, I haven't read the book, but I still had a lot of fun with that movie.  I just thought it was well-made.  (I'm also an unabashed Gilliam fan, so my bias is pretty clear.)

I fell asleep during 300.  Yeah, you heard me right.  Three.  Hundred.  Suck on that.  I also kept falling asleep during Yojimbo, but that might have more to do with how exhausted I was and less with how bad the movie was.

I turned off my DVD Player during Wedding Crashers, as well.  It's one of my friends' favorite movie, and we sat down and watched it late at night together.  She fell asleep with one hour to go, and I tried to pad through it, but when she was asleep, I came to the startling realization that I loathed this movie and did not want to watch a second more of it.  I switched it off during Will Ferrell's scene of overacting at a funeral.  Just could not stand it.

I downloaded Caligula a few months ago, and I was determined to make it through.  I watched that filth in ten minute blocks every day, since that was about all of Caligula I could really take.  The movie couldn't make up its mind as to whether it was a porn, an inaccurate historical film, or just something that wanted to shock audiences.  Frankly, if I wanted those, I'd watch an actual porn, Life of Brian, or Jackass, respectively.

That is not exactly true, there are some movies out there that were very good and still required you to have some knowledge of the book. An example of this comes from the Film Noir era. Most of the Film Noir era in the 1930s and 1940s had to compensate for the Production Code that was created on March 31, 1930 (at first it was not strictly enforced until June 13, 1934 due to fears of a United States government censorship and the pointing of Joseph Breen as head of the Production Code Administration (PCA)). There were three guidelines or 'working principles' that came to the production, which were the following:

-No picture should lower the moral standards of those who see it.
-Law, natural or divine, must not be belittled, ridiculed, nor must a sentiment be created against it.
-As far as possible, life should not be misrepresented, at least not in such a way as to place in the minds of youth false values on life.

At first, these guidelines were not enforced at until the installation of Breen as head of the PCA in 1934. After his installation, movies were forced into these principles or faced denial of being distributed in the United States. Well the Film Noir era had to deal with this by insinuating that acts of violence. An example of this came in the movie The Big Heat where the scene of the scalding of a person's face took place off the screen, but the film eluded it, which was perfectly fine with the film guidelines. While this worked for this film, other films like The Big Sleep had issues with doing that while following the code, which resulted in obscurity in the movie which can only be understood by people that read the novel, but the Big Sleep was still a really good movie, in fact its in the top 250 on imdb. Just because a movie may require you to read the novel, doesn't mean the movie doesn't work.
