Watched an odd assortment of movies last night:

A Cinderella Story: Hilary Duff in run of the mill "tween" romantic-comedy.

The Ninth Gate: Polanski's adaptation of The Dumas Club.  Decent, but unintentionally funny in places.  Probably a really good book.

Man of the West: Anthony Mann western with Gary Cooper as a man trying to overcome his violent past.  Still don't like Cooper, but Mann's great, and the movie's pretty brutal for a late 50's one.  Lee J Cobb is - as always - brilliant.

Curse of the Golden Flower, Very pretty, really no 'good' people in it.

High Fidelity, was alright, the last quarter felt like a different movie though.

Sideswipe

Revenge of the Sith.  Non Rifftraxed, unfortunately.

I was bieng threated with death by wolf raping before it was cool!.

4 today:

Deathproof: Talky and overlong, but I enjoyed it.  The first half feels completely different to the second, even though it's basically the same premise.

Transformers: The robots were pretty cool, but the comedy and - eventually - the explosions wore me down into a stupor.  Megan Fox was nice to look at though.

Bedazzled: The only other film of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's I've seen is the risible Hound of the Baskervilles, so I was a little apprehensive about this one.  I was pleasantly surprised: Cook is excellent as the charming, but evil, Satan.

Liquid Sky: I really have no idea how I feel about this movie.  Aliens come to Earth to score heroin, but discover peoples' orgasms are more potent.  Its not porn, but it is very, very strange.  Kinda dull and interesting at the same time.

Thank You For Not Smoking: a lot funnier than I was expecting.

I love Bedazzled as I'm sure you could deduce from my signature line gallery. One of my favorite bits is this one:

When you explain it that way...

Oh and Eleanor Bron is lovely

Yeah, I love Cook's deeds of petty evil: there's one on a telephone poll where he disconnects people which is pretty funny too.  And on his lack of his inspiration: "The only thing I've invented in the last 50 years is advertising!"

Okay, as the past few days were non-work days for me, I got the following crossed off my list:

The Black Cauldron: Pretty, but that's about it.  Seemed quite similar to Lord of the Rings, but that could be the source material it's based from.

March of the Penguins: I think I've been spoilt by the fantastic work the BBC does on their series.  The footage was fantastic, but the narration was extremely annoying - the way the writers tried to anthropmorpise the Penguins seemed like a throw back to the Disney documentaries from the 50s.

Planet Terror: Rodriguez continues to disappoint the crap out of me.  He makes these awesome looking trailers, with great concepts, and then utterly fails to engage me.  Rose McGowan is not a lead actress.

The Wild One: Brando is good, Lee Marvin is great, but the rest is a little dreary and very dated.

Winchester 73: Another Mann western, this his first collaboration with James Stewart is about the rifle that apparently won the Indian wars (according to the movie).  Good throughout, with a strong ensemble and bit-parts from soon to be famous Rock Hudson (as an Indian!) and Tony Curtis as a lonesome Cavalryman.

Zelig: Great Woody Allen mockumetary about a man who so wants people to like him, he ends up taking on their characteristics in their company.  The whole is boosted by a nice degree of authenticity and an hilarious moment when Zelig finds himself as a Brown Shirt at a Hitler rally.

I recently watched Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Interesting film, maybe you've heard of it.

RoninFox

I think I remember that one.  Kind of a strange film.  Maybe they should riff it.

Dim of the Yard

Crossroads.  If it weren't for the fact that there's a RiffTrax out of this and that it would seem to be almost normal to be watching that movie on this forum, I would have given you folks permission to point and laugh.

Went to the theater and saw The Kingdom. Pretty good, I think: kind of slow in the beginning, but it picks up and gets interesting. My main complaint is that Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman's characters (the stereotypical Strong American Womyn and Sarcastic Computer-Using Chucklehut respectively) seemed a corny and unnecessary an otherwise serious movie.
