I thought you guys were kidding that you hadn't seen Firefly.  I don't know why you would go see Serenity without having seen Firefly.  That's why the movie didn't do as well in the theaters.  You almost had to already know what it was about before you want to see it.

I knew it was a spin-off from "Firefly" - I just never made it through an episode of that without wanting to blow my brains out.

I saw Serenity after seeing another movie (gotta love Multiplexes), so all it cost me was my time.  I gave it a chance figuring Mr. Buffy wouldn't actually make a movie that only the show's fans could understand because - regardless of how many DVD sets they sold - it's still a relatively small number of people.  Not enough to make a feature film financially successful (unless they all went back 10 times or more).

And I don't think that anyone who was starting from square one with this would have known what was going on - or cared, for that matter.

Worse, I knew something of the background of this and I found the "payoff" rather weak.

Add to that some of the dumb things going on in that film....

Serenity made Alien Resurrection look brilliant, IMHO.

I'll say this, Firefly was the only good Sci-fi on the Sci-Fi channel.  I don't think the show was good enough to make into a movie, and the movie isn't that great, but for the Sci-Fi channel to cancel their only good show was stupid.

"Firefly" was on the Fox Network.

Maybe you're thinking about "Farscape".  That was on the Sci-Fi Network.  They probably cancelled it for the same reason they did MST3K....not enough "crossover" to other shows on the network.

Unlike the wrestling they're showing now....    ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Junkyard

Sci Fi... Is showing wrestling? Plese tell me you are either joking, or that the show is about dinosaurs wrestling aliens.

mrbasehart

Nope.  They're showing ECW wrestling.  I think it's their highest rated show, too.

Whoops.....I don't have cable, but I thought it was on Sci-Fi for awhile.  I'm stupid.
I cancelled my cable right after they stopped showing reruns of MST3k, but the stuff on Sci-Fi then was terrible.  I think wrestling is probably a step up sadly.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think Sci-Fi showed it in reruns once.  Although if you cut off your cable service when you say, you wouldn't have seen it there.   :)

I watched Firefly from *downloading it* so maybe the files had the Sci-Fi logo on them and that's what screwed me up.

BathTub

Yes Sci-Fi aired it, including the eps that Fox didn't show.

Well... just when I thought I was going to be comfortable around here, I find a festering nest of stinking Firefly/Serenity haters.

I think a goodly portion of us are Serenity lovers. Whenever anything, good or bad, in the realm of cinema is brought up, one or two of us always stand up on the "Why do so many people like this?" soap box. It's part of the atmosphere around here. :^)

That's one of the reasons I like this place so much.  People have the courage to stand up for their own beliefs - no matter how wrong and boneheaded they are.   ;)
