Tripe

I think because he's a great ideas man but then falters on completion.

There is a story he tells about having lunch with Carry Grant everyday for a week because Grant loved The 2000-Year-Old Man and was working on a movie in the same lot as Brooks.

So at first Mel's really excited to be having lunch with this big star and relishes the chance to chat with hi, maybe bounce some ideas off him. By the end of the week Mel's petrified by the thought of running out of things to say to Grants and takes to hiding under his desk and instructing his secretary to tell Grant he's left town.

I think it's a good story (which I've not done justice to not least because when Brooks tells it he does a great Carey Grant impersonation), but it shines a light on Brooks attention to things and how his interest can wander to the point of something that starts great falters at the end.

That kind of reminds me how critics lampooned The Producers for being a two-hour comedy, and so out of both humor and spite, Mel Brooks deliberately made Blazing Saddles drag on for no good reason after the obvious ending, which I thought was hilarious   It definitely seemed like
it was in response to the critical reaction to The Producers.

Actually I like the "weak" ending of Blazing Saddles best of all. I love how they get of their horses and get in the car.

Me too, that's why I said it was hilarious.

J-Proof

The two most hilarious moments in Saddles, imo, were 1.) Lilly singing "I'm Tired" and 2.) The entire Jim meets Bart sequence in the jail>>

"What is it that you like to do?"
"Play chess....screw....."
"Let's play chess...."

And not only was that classic, but Jim telling Bart to catch the chess piece before him.....insanely hilarious.....

Personally, I would much rather watch Mel Brooks films than 99.99% of the so called Comedy films out there.

QFT.   Even in his current geriatric state, he's still one of the funniest men in America.

I only thought the ending (the part in the tower) was weak.   I like the endings of all the others.

Well, maybe not History of the World, Pt 1....but most all.

Yeah, I just don't like the preceeding 5 minutes, where there's the massive brawl.  It wasn't particularly funny in Casino Royale (the original) and it wasn't funny here.

And the whole "building a fake town just up the road to fool the bad guys" schtick didn't work to well in that episode of "Enterprise" that stole it....

But I digress.   ;)

Junkyard

I like how the movie broke the fourth wall, then proceeded to break down several other walls during the course of the brawl.

Principal_Skin-trade

I really like the ending of Robin Hood: Men in tights:
Robin Hood: Ummm... darling?
Marianne: Yes dear?
Robin Hood: The key won't open the chastity belt...
Marianne: WHAT?!
