I just want to learn how to land a spaceship so precisely that I can impale someone right through the middle.

(Also, who else thinks that would be a pretty kick ass way to go?)

I suppose it goes without saying, but I love how Army Of Darkness deals with the cliche of the "dumb character guy thinks the monster's dead and he goes up to touch its corpse and then suddenly the monster reveals that it was only faking and attacks the dumb guy character".  I refer of course to the part where Lord Arthur is about to touch the witch's corpse and Ash grabs his hand saying: "It's a trick.  Get an axe."

I use that quote all the time in my daily life.

BOSS: Time for the weekly sales meeting!
ME: (To coworker) It's a trick.  Get an axe.

WAITER: May I take your drink orders?
ME: (To date) It's a trick.  Get an axe.

MOTHER: Merry Christmas, sweetheart!  Your father and I are so glad to see you again!
ME: (To sibling) It's a trick.  Get an axe.

POSTMAN: If you could just sign for this...
ME: (To cat) It's a trick.  Get an axe.

Been watching the Sam Jones Flash Gordon?   Or Star Trek Nemesis?

I'd try that postman joke with my dog, Edison, but he's always too busy freaking out at the mailman to help with a joke.

Plus, I don't want to have th epostman hear me talk about axes while my dog is threatening to rip out his throat. Not after what happened last time.

Fortunately, the jury bought your story even though the judge knew you were lying through your teeth.

Look, I was just cutting some wood, and the dog had just gotten into my Ritalin! I know it LOOKED bad, but....

Save it for the appeal. You don't want the story to sound trite from too many retellings. ;)

Could you imagine someone on the bench shrugging his shoulders and just saying, "Eh, wrong place, wrong time."?

By the way, could extreme close ups during trial scenes be considered cliche?

I've seen a few cliches lately that really grate on my nerves.  They're small, but they're used a lot, and they're things you'd never see in real life:

1) A character places a small item or keepsake in another character's palm.  He then proceeds to push the guy's fingers closed around the item, usually very slowly.  Like the person has no function below the wrist and needs assistance grabbing the damn thing.  Have you ever done this to someone?  Anyone done it to you?  Didn't think so.

2) A character is about to leave the room, run off to save the day, catch a plane, whatever.  Another character yells after them, "WAIT!"  He then says, "You take care of yourself, ya'hear?"  Have you ever heard anyone actually say this for any reason, EVER? No!

Hmm... I've actually done both of these.  But I should mention that I did them because they are movie cliches and entertaining to put into a real life situation.

surely.  But I don't think anyone has done this because they meant it.

A killer combo would be to do these two things simultaneously.

I had a friend who used to insert leading comments on the value of a dollar trying to get an insurance commercial to start. He'd then look around expectantly. I forget what he was referencing. It never worked, but it was entertaining.
