It was written by the author who gets abducted to be part of Ozymandias' "project," for one; but, also, the story is about a man who, in his attempt to combat the horrors wrought by the "ghost pirates," inadvertently becomes a horror himself. The witless interpretation of that is that it's an allegory for the Cold War, but, in my view, it's more about the atrocities Ozymandias has to embrace in order to "save" humanity.

Yup, what she said. I wonder if any of that will make into Zak Snyder's movie. Doubt it.

I think that in the case of trimming a 12-issue series down to a 2-hour movie, the pirate comic will be the first thing to go.  Maybe a little reference to it for the fans, but I don't really even think it would translate to other mediums very well.  I wouldn't be surprised if the boy and the news vendor aren't in the film at all either.

Tripe

No sign of Storm Saxon in V for Vendetta so yes I'd be surprised to see the Pirate Comic

Any word on casting? IMDB just has people as "rumoured" or "in talks".  I think someone suggested David Caruso for Rorschach, which I think would be perfect, but maybe not from a movie producer's point of view.  He's not exactly an "A-list" star.  I suppose they could surround him with big names...

Actually I saw an article a while back where Snyder said that when he submitted the script for Watchmen he included the Black Freighter script as a separate thing, probably as a dvd extra but he claimed to have an idea for putting it in it that would work well.

most online places say this:
Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan,
Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach,
Patrick Wilson as Nite Owl,

wile these two aren't as widespread:
Matthew Goode as Ozymandias,
Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre.

supposedly they'll be an official announcement at comic-con

That would suck, since the image of them embracing might be the most poignant in the whole series.

But yeah, nobody's going to be able to do right by Watchmen.  Too many intricate pieces fittng together to make a whole greater than the sum.  It might still end up a good movie, but it won't be able to touch the depth of the comic.

I'm not sure it matters what list Rorschach is on, since he's masked throughout most of the story.  Caruso certainly has the deadpan line delivery and the homeliness down, though.

Casting Caruso might be problematic, though, if only because I'm going to picture him putting on his sunglasses dramatically after every line.  It'll be worse if he breaks somebody's finger immediately afterwards and the guy screams.

Tripe

Let's not forget standing legs akimbo with hands on his hips.

Well this has been brought up so I figure I'll post it here, a preview of the upcoming Animated version of Justice League: The New Frontier, Co-starring guest riffer Neil Patrick Harris! as The Flash.

I'm happy to see a few sequences/characters I thought would be cut for sure are still in it.

This is gonna be, like, 3 hours long, right? I hope? New Frontier's one of my all-time favorite minseries. Darwyn Cooke can do no wrong. Dan Didio kinda scares me.

Looks like no one's mentioned Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier. (I linked to the awesome oversized hardcover absolute edition, also available in two TPBs.)

I FINALLY got to read New Frontier this week. Utterly outstanding.

Now, of course, comes the game we all play whenever someone does a movie adaptation of one of these: the What Plots Are They Gonna Write Out of The Movie Version? game.

Most likely omission: Challengers of the Unknown

Most heartbreaking omission if it happens: John Henry
