Max Havoc: Curse of the Dragon
Feature film · 2021

Look, when you name your kid Max Havoc, you can’t be too surprised when he grows up to kill a man in a kickboxing ring.

With Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett

Look, when you name your kid Max Havoc, you can't be too surprised when he grows up to kill a man in a kickboxing ring. The incident is so traumatic that he retires to become a famous sports photographer, which of course brings him to the epicentre of the professional sports universe: Guam!

There he meets his love interest, Dancing With the Stars Season 9 fourth-place finisher Joanna Krupa. She's a triple threat: Maxim Cover Model, Real Housewife, and Breasts Haver. Her sister is on spring break studying to become a heart surgeon, something her patients will be relieved to learn she mostly did in a bikini. When they come into possession of a stolen dragon that contains a Yakuza's ashes, things get crazy very quickly. In fact, you might just say the havoc gets cranked up to... a level far above the standard level of havoc.

Richard Roundtree and David Carradine co-star as guys who wanted a free trip to Guam, though Carradine insisted they get separate hotel rooms for some reason. Join Mike, Kevin, and Bill for Max Havoc: Curse of the Dragon!

I enjoyed this, but it's not as over the top as you might think. It's more low budget slow, but there's also coherence and competence behind this. Albert Pyun is one of those guys that does solid work with horribly low budget stuff. I actually enjoyed his 'Mean Guns' movie with Ice T and Christopher Lambert (got the DVD back in the day). So this, while not 'good', isn't utter crap either like so very many other works they've done. Riffing was solid, but I was just interested enough in the movie to see what happened next.

By contrast similar films like, 'No Retreat, No Surrender' was more ridiculous, and of course "Death Promise' was an absolute classic. This was worth owning as far as I was concerned, but those other two should be purchased first if you haven't gotten them yet.

Yeah it's not a horrible movie overall. It's just a low budget beat em up with a travel brochure built in. It makes me want to test my theory of going half away around the world on a drivers license. Oh and buying a really rare antiquity from a former seventies movie star.

Fodder's just this guy, you know.

We really loved this riff - I hope they do the sequel too.

I could have Googled it. I just didn't think Guam had the budget for two tourism films.

This one was made in Canada
Ooh, then maybe Brandon Tenold will do it on one of his Canuxsploitation-A-Thons!
