POLL WILL RUN FOR FOUR DAYS.
50 Places
No inventions this time. So I'm going with the music one, though there are some interesting stuff in here.
(And I'll say again, please don't vote for anything directly movie-related, at least until after this list of crap. I don't want to do three movies in a row.)
EDIT: What did I just say *tongue-in-cheek grumble*
Does comic books include Newspaper Comics, or are we talking individual comic book issues/storylines/miniseries/whatnot?
Come on '80s songs! :)

From the owner:
"Due to popular demand, it will not include comic strips, since many people express their interest in seeing them as separate lists. Basically it's series, but I will also include runs by creative teams or writers (i.e. you can chose Frank Miller on Daredevil or you can chose the entirety of Daredevil if you want). I won't break it into story arcs for series where that is part of a much larger story (I'd rather you choose all of Sandman rather than simply "Game of You" or "the Kindly Ones").
So to make it much shorter and simpler: it includes series, particular runs, original graphic novels (not collections) and things like that. I will include web-series that are not strips (Freak Angels yes, Penny Arcade no, as that will go with a Top 50 strips later on down the line). No individual issues."
80's songs again for me, been hoping fora music one for a while.
Despite the stuff I want to host, yea, agreed.
I voted for 80's songs as well.
Although one of my suggestions (the Riff O'Rama) seems like it is overdue. We did just have a Rifftrax related one 2 lists ago, so I guess it could probably wait a bit longer. I'm interested in seeing how everything stacks up against each other (Rifftrax vs. Rifftrax Presents vs. Cinematic Titanic vs. Film Crew vs. iRiffs)

Alright then, good to know.
Come on Comic Books!
It probably won't win this time, but I really think the Paranormal one would be fun. There are so many different beings out there to choose from, from mermaids to aliens to cryptids like mokele mbembe and the Dover Demon. Am I the only paranormal nut here?
The celebrity crushes thing would be fun too but I think this list belongs to the '80s
I can safely say I'm sure anais and I voted for the same thing.

He'd not be on my list.
I think the big problem with a celebrity crush list would be the simple fact that this forum contains maybe eight females and a gabillion males.
Of course some people, if they're in a whimsical mood, might not turn in a single gender list....
Yeah, but that would still make the list "lady, lady, lady, BRUCE CAMPBELL, lady, lady, lady, lady, HOT DUDE, lady, lady, lady, lady, OTHER HOT DUDE."

Especially considering that there aren't that many brands that are known to most people, I think a general booze list would get a better response. :)

Yeah.. Booze baby, boooozzze.. :P
Yes spirits will do.
And what of Purple Drank (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=purple%20drank)?
Sizzurp is spirit based so I think it'd count.
If the two people that voted for Top Rifftrax films or shorts had voted for my Riff O'Rama poll instead (which would include iRiffs, Film Crew and Cinematic Titanic offerings with the Rifftrax/Rifftrax Presents films and shorts), we'd have a closer race on our hands.
And for 80's hit songs - what does that mean exactly. I'd assume Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 anywhere from 1980-1989. But I wouldn't want to assume anything.
And a Top 50 Booze poll would be cool too. 1. Jäger 2. Jack 3. Everything else.
Actually that's a fair point; do the British charts count as well as the US ones?

Is there a website to help with this. I'm sure there is, so let me rephrase that: where is the website. I have bands from the 80's I like but I don't know what songs by those bands made charts, if any. I mean, I know the Pixies and Devo were important, but I don't know if they charted (probably Whip It but that's one of my least favourite Devo songs), even on the fringes.
Eighty-EightyNine has all the Billboard Top 40 lists of the 80s.

If you do a search on allmusic.com for the artist, there is a tab on the artist page for charts and awards. Billboard information would be listed there.
For example - one of my favorite songs from the 80's - "Lonely School" by Tommy Shaw would not be eligible for the list of crap, since according to allmusic.com it only made it up to #60 on the billboard Hot 100.
Since it won't turn up on the eventual list ;
Spoiler
I can't wait for this one. It'll be fun watching all the clips of the top 50 and hopefully folks will post clips of their also-rans.

I'll keep putting my one up until it gets the nod. One is just a narrower version of the other. I'd like to see the RT Presents, iRiffs, CT and Film Crew included in a Top 50 with the Rifftrax stuff. I know that CT and some of the iRiff artists have big followings on here. I bet a few of them would compete with the Rifftrax stuff on such a list.
No love for video games? I know we can't all be hardcore gamers, but it shouldn't be too hard for even the most casual gamer to come up with 25...

i kinda like top 100 cause im afraid a lot of what i like wont have made the top 40 but i havent investigated yet. but whatever happens i shall abide and get a list in!
why is top 40 seperate anyways?
Top 100 would really open it up but it would probably result in fewer songs showing up on multiple lists.
Quote from: Imrahil on February 26, 2010, 12:30:33 PM
So, would it be better to include the top 100 billboard charters or just the top 40? I'm thinking that top 40 would be good, but top 40 in any given week, not just the top 40 for the year...
Thoughts?
Top 40 for the year only would cut out a good portion of the songs I'm thinking about.
Anything that hit the top 100 would probably be too big of a pool to choose from. (Typically 400+ songs each year) Besides most of those songs would hardly be classified as "hits".
I think that anything that made it to #40 or higher on the weekly Hot 100 chart would be perfect. Basically, if Casey Kasem played it on his Top 40 radio show, then it would be considered a "hit song", and therefore would be eligible.
But that's just my opinion.
(If you do decide to have it be anything from the Top 100, then I'll probably have a ton of weird crap on my list that most people here have never heard before.)

Not sure where it began, but Top 40 is usually the mark everybody wants. (American Top 40 with Casey Kasem was a popular radio show for years, and the BBC Radio One UK Chart Show Top 40 still plays every Sunday to this day.

You can search for songs that hit the UK chart here. I guess this would be good if you had a song in mind but weren't sure if it charted.
(Or if your song didn't make the US Top 40 - maybe it made the UK Top 40 and can make your list that way instead!)

Go the other way about it then. Think of your favorite bands that were around in the 80's and search for them on allmusic.com (for US chart info) and everyhit.com (for UK chart info). You might be able to find enough tracks that way to fill out your list.
Several songs on my list are gonna be from my two favorite 80's bands, that have only had 1 big hit song here in the States between them (but a ton of top 40 songs in the UK.) So that is the way I will be able to work around the fact that my favorite band and my 2 favorite songs by that band didn't chart here in the States. They were smashs in the UK.
I can imagine for some of the younger people on this board, the 80's list will be tough since they just weren't around back then (Or if they were around, they weren't aware of Top 40 radio.). But on the other hand, a 60's singles list would be easy for me and I'm sure a few others of my age range.
A top Rock Albums of the 80's (or any decade for that matter) would be fun too. Somebody should suggest that next time.
So far, I've got 19 songs on my list - 12 of them charted in the UK only. 4 in the US only. And 3 charted in both.
I'm sure I'll think of tons of other songs and be tweaking this list all the way up until the deadline.
I lived in Germany from 86-88 and could pick up Radio Luxembourg at night from where I lived. (Anybody else here ever listen to that back then?) So I heard all the hit UK songs from that era. It was a godsend too, as the Armed Forces radio was dull, and the German radio stations (while cool) were in German.

Has there been a list o crap for the top 50 greatest rock bands?
Sorry, brain fart. Top 50 greatest rock ALBUMS. As there been one for that? I remember the rock band one cause Oasis is on it, which suprised me greatly (I mean I like Oasis, but....)
80s isn't too bad of one... Especially since that is the main music i listen too...
Yeah, I grew up in the 'Reagen 80's' so this will be fun for me 8)

if 80s wins I won't be able to think of 25. really. i think there are only 5 songs i like from the 80s---well "singles" anyway.
Somebody should suggest that next time.
that's a good idea

Judging from the video the Buggles are to Devo as the Monkees are to the Beatles. Still like the song though.

I've only just recently bought a couple QuipTracks (and have not yet bought any iRiffs, and wouldn't have had ANY of the Cinematic Titanic films on my list, or Film Crew either, but not as averse to them), so that didn't have anything in it that wouldn't have been in a RiffTrax-only selection for me. Possibly that was the case with others, too.

And for 80's hit songs - what does that mean exactly. I'd assume Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 anywhere from 1980-1989. But I wouldn't want to assume anything.
With what I really liked from the 80s, there would only be possibly one or two tunes that could be called "hits". If it was "favorite music from the 80s", then I could submit a list, but likely no-one else would have the stuff I did on their lists (so my spending time on it would have been a waste of energy). [Band samples: Brand X, Coulourbox, Al DiMeola, Yello, Wall of Voodoo, Jerry Harrison, Phil Manzanera]
Had it fully registered before I voted, I might've gone for "50 Places You Would Like to Visit Before You Die" (but I likely skipped over it because even making it to two medical appointments a week is too much for me, so I know traveling is out... but there's bunches of places I would've liked to have gone if I could have managed it).

These things work best when there's at least some kind of limit on the pool. I think this one is still fairly broad, however.

I may not have been clear. I wasn't suggesting that "favorite 80s music" would
WORK as an LoC, just that because my taste is so obscure, that my music wouldn't fit into "80s Top 40 Hits", which was why I wouldn't vote for (or participate in) that LoC.
Glad to know someone else here even knows who Brand X WAS. After the first time I got to see them live I was able to go backstage where I got them all to sign the Moroccan Roll album cover (I'd taken it with me), and then talked to Robin Lumley for about an hour... during which I believe Percy Jones was snorting coke (it was the 80s after all). WAY cool memory! Even cooler because a local Chicago station recorded the concert, and aired it, so I had a cassette of the concert (since turned to a CD) in which I can hear myself cheering (I was right up against the stage while they played, close enough for mikes to pick me up out of the crowd). ;D During the talk with Lumley, we discussed a book that I later sent them a copy of, and I got a 'thanks' letter from Lumley in response in which he said he'd read it, then "pass it along to the other geezers in the group". Incredibly rare to get that kind of documentation of such a cool life event.

I had never heard of "Brand X" until you mentioned them, but after reading about them on wiki, it seems like I should have. They sound pretty cool, and I'll have to check them out.
Don't forget you can also use everyhit.com to look up bands that may have hit the UK Top 40 during the 80's. The UK charts were quite different from the US charts (still are really), and you may still be able to find enough to cobble together a list. Just a suggestion.
I'm starting to have a tough time with this list. There are just so many songs I want to include. I keep finding songs that I figured would have no chance to be eligible. That they actually did make the UK Top 40 singles chart and I could have them if I wanted them..
I might end up with 25 songs that all could be #1 on my list (which is gonna make it that much harder to sort.)
Still, I think my top 3 is pretty much set in stone. Now the problem is trying to sort the rest of them for maximum benefit. And just hope that others here share the same taste in artists and their "hit" singles.
Whatever happens, it should be a fun list. Can't wait to see the outcome. ;D

Just because some people would not vote for anything other than Rifftrax in the poll, doesn't mean the poll shouldn't be done that way. It also doesn't mean you should skip the poll if we end up with one. Quite the opposite. Having people like you (who would only vote for Rifftrax things because they don't find the other stuff worthy) is exactly what the poll would need to get a fair and representative sampling of the opinions of the forum on this topic.
I would hope that everybody would submit lists, even if they did not want to include iRiffs or the others. Especially if they did not want to include the others. That's the only way to get an accurate poll result.
I'm beginning to think we should stick to the yearly charts instead of the weekly. I'm having a hard time figuring much out with the weekly stuff. I can't even find out which REM songs have been in the top 40 (maybe I just don't know how to google right).
No look if it was in the charts during that year (rather than just at the end of the year) it'll count.

And Orange Crush (#28 in the UK in 1989)
I'll say it again. allmusic.com (for the US charts) everyhit.com (for the UK charts)
On allmusic - just do a search for your artist, when you get to the artist page, click on the tab that says charts & awards, then click on the Billboard singles tab. It will list all the various Billboard charts that apply, but the only one you will want to look for is Billboard Hot 100.
On everyhit - just do a search for your artist - if they made the UK top 40, it will be listed there.
It's super easy! ;D
Also a yearly charts only would likely disqualify 95% of the songs already on my list. So I'd be against that for obvious reasons.
Have to check, but don't think these cracked the Top 40
Man I wish that second one had charted. I'd love to have that one on my list (even if it was only at #25.)

For both gogikranz and Monty, the two albums of Brand X's I'd most recommend are (in order):
Moroccan Roll and
Unorthodox Behavior (which are, actually, mid-70s vintage rather than 80s, which was when I saw them live). It's interesting on
Unorthodox Behavior (an album where the band first got together and basically built every tune by just noodling around and saving and expanding on what sounded good, yet the thing sounds like it was composed by one person it is so flawlessly integrated), Percy Jones (bass) and Phil Collins (who was at that time playing drums with them) had just finished a stint with Brian Eno on
Another Green World and one tune on
Unorthodox Behavior starts EXACTLY like a tune from
Another Green World, but then goes in a totally different direction after about 10-20 seconds. ;D
Regarding the 80s Hits list, the tunes by the bands I like that would've made any Top 40 charts anywhere (e.g. Yello's "Oh Yeah", , and even Peter Gabriel "Shock the Monkey") aren't the tunes I'd put as favorites/best of their work. Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" was probably a Top 40 hit, and possibly the only 'Hit' by a band that I actually liked enough to put on a list. Oh well. [We need a 'shrug' smiley. :) ]

OK... I get it: it's more a "what actually gets bought" list, rather than a "relative merits of each/comparative" list. [i.e. how much is owned, versus which - of all of them - are actually 'best'] I do suspect that RiffTrax would completely dominate such a list tho, as I don't think there are that many people who get many of each. But then again, the more die-hard forum members who submit lists may be more 'experienced' riff aficionados than the norm. ;D

No, from the thread's past, what I was saying was that more people would buy regular RiffTraxes in general, and only a small portion of them (in comparison) would also buy iRiffs, so iRiffs wouldn't be fairly represented on such a list because of small
quantity sold,
not because they lacked in
quality.

Oh, yeah! Their shows were incredible [the first time I saw them was at a smaller venue, hence my being able to get close enough to be invited backstage].
And yeah,
Unorthodox Behavior remains one of my top 15 albums after almost 35 years, even though I slightly prefer
Moroccan Roll (which has been in my Top 10 since '77, only being ousted as 'favorite album' by Yello's
One Second in 86).
Other vintage faves (actually most from the 70s): Return to Forever
Where Have I Known You Before, Kraftwerk
Ralf & Florian, The John Payne/Louis Levin Band
The John Payne/Louis Levin Band, Al DiMeola
Elegant Gypsy. From the 80s, the top one would be Yello
One Second (the European version, without 'Oh Yeah' because that was already on
Stella, but shoved on the US release of
One Second thanks to its popularity from Ferris Beuller). In the 80s I finally found music that I hadn't really known I'd been searching for, with 'Westernized World' music (e.g. Bill Laswell, Nicky Skopelitis, Monsoon, etc.)
OK... rather than turn this into a music thread :D , I'll cease putting up album titles here.
It is great to realize that there are fans of 'my music' here. So much of my life people would ask "what the hell is that?" :)

some 80's albums are my favorites of all time and very important to me, but admittedly they never had hit singles.
i think i might be voting for some songs based more on the band behind it than the song in question. but still researching.
I don't know. Maybe you had to be there. I was just a baby during the Reagan years, and I can't really remember anything before '90, '91 or so.
I suppose I'll just never get it.
Yeah I don't remember any music from the 80s so I will be giving this one a miss.
born in 88. you gotta explore, of course i dont explore modern music so i guess we're even.
All you young 'whisker-biscuits' just sit back and let the 80's experts handle this one and when this list is complete, maybe, just maybe, you'll want to explore this unique musical decade for yourselves 8)
I was 5-15 in the '80s (please everybody look where the apostrophe goes). Frankly most of the decade is awful but some of the music is good.

Actually, since we are on the subject. The one that always confuses me is where does the period go in a sentence that ends in a parentheses? Inside or outside the parentheses? I'm gonna guess outside since that is how you just did it. But I usually get tripped up by that one.
Actually it's either/or depending upon how much of the sentence the period ends is contained within the parenthesis.
My personal parenthetical rule: if it's a complete sentence within the parentheses, the period goes inside. That just makes sense to me.
Yep I amended my post to reflect that (it occurred to me that the distinction isn't as obvious as I assumed it is). :)
That's probably the way I've been doing it all along then. Not realizing it was correct either way depending on what was written. I know that sometimes I'll have it inside the parentheses, sometimes outside. I just would wonder sometimes if I was doing it right.
I'm about to piss off some uptight English teachers, but here's the bottom line: Whatever gets your idea across to the reader clearly is the best way to go, and damn the rules. Trying to apply rules to the English language is a fool's errand.

It's not that I was trying to follow perfect grammar. It's just that sometimes it would look wrong to me and I would want to change it. Other times it would look fine. I just wanted to know if it was supposed to be one way or another.
But I agree. As long as it's concise and to the point, it's all good.

To a point this is correct; many of the grammatical rules are artificial shibboleths.
Some, however, are intended to make sure the correct sense is conveyed, like the one about apostrophe placement. :)

Sure, since a punctuation mark is basically a rule in and of itself, in this case "I stand for something that has been omitted." Other gramatical rules, on the other hand, are utterly pointless. Yes, I know "to boldy go" is a split infinitive. No, I don't give a crap. ;) Does "to go, boldly, where no man has gone before" really sound any better?
Correct and that's actually a prime example of one of the artificial ones. English has many Latin derived words in it (as well as those from many other languages) but it isn't a romance language so to apply a rule from Latin is completely intentional.
Like I said, many many of the rules are just there as shibboleths.

Ok, so if you know the correct application of the grammatical rules it showed that you were "educated" and therefore of a specific social class (the middle one since they tend to care about these sorts of things)
Shibboleths can be natural; the original use was a good example (the other tribes of Israel pronounced the SH, the Ephraimites pronounced it with just a S) or artificial; how one pronounces the word "waistcoat" for example.
Shibboleths can be non-verbal as well, such as whether your cutlery includes fish-knives or not.

I just want everybody to be aware that if I have any underage girls on my list (circa '70s/early '80s), that these are all women who were still born years before me and my "crush" is from a time when I was underage as well. If that makes any sense.
So Who do we PM our 80s lists to anyway ???
I think we need official rules first. For those of us who don't really remember the '80s, we don't want to see a bunch of obscure deep cuts that you old foagies remember that happen to have charted for week. For example, I know there's a bunch of Devo fans here, but just put "Whip It" and leave it at that. I know it's not their best song, or indicative of their work as a whole, but this should be a list of songs that the rest of us recognize. Let's settle that decades-old dispute of "Is Hungry Like The Wolf better than Take On Me?"

What you are describing is to use only the yearly top 40 charts for eligible songs. That would kill 95% of my current list. That would also be extremely boring. I could care less to see a list made up entirely of clichéd overplayed '80s songs such as the three you mentioned.

I see where you're coming from, but wouldn't that lead to another messy list like Guilty Pleasures with 50 songs tied for #1? As long as I don't have to compile it, I guess...
I think as long as they charted in the top 40 for any given week, they're fairly memorable. I don't think this list has as much freedom as the guilty pleasure list, with plenty of songs that will appear on many, if not most, lists. There will be some obscure and lesser known in the States tracks, but it's not like we're going to see Ultravox's Vienna running away with the whole thing to the dismay of everyone.

I hate it when people mention specific items before all the lists are in, and they are something that is on my list. (That's always been a List Of Crap pet peeve of mine.) (snort) That's not going to help. A minor example, the biggest song of 1986 was "That's What Friends Are For" by Dionne Warwick. Seriously, when was the last time you heard that song played? Or how about Billy Ocean? Okay, you may have gotten "Caribbean Queen" or "Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car" but what about "Suddenly", "Loverboy" or "When the Going Gets Tough"? All were top 10 hits in the US, but do you ever hear them played on retro stations? Nope. Sherriff's "When I'm With You"? Debbie Gibson's "Shake Your Love"? "Somewhere Out There" from "An American Tail"?
No, there's not going to be a huge outcry for Billy Ocean or Firehouse in the list because we've mostly forgotten those songs, just like you won't be seeing "No Scrubs", "Sunny Came Home" or Cher's "Believe" on a 90s list. But those "obscure deep cuts" were all over the radio at the time, so I'd expect to see them.

Maybe we could do a special Top 100 list of crap for this one? If everybody agrees to send in lists of 50. It's not my list to run, so it would have to be up to the listmaster to decide. I could come up with another 25 easy.
yeah. You send in a list of 25. #1 gets 25 points, #2 24 points... #25 gets 1 point.
You send it in and the host compiles everyone's list into a top 50..

Judging by the way the votes are going, the next two Lists of Crap are going to be Celebrity Crushes and Top Hit Songs from the '80s. Whichever one doesn't win now will have to be the favorite for the next one.

Actually that would be kind of funny, like that game where each person adds something new to a folded up bit of paper. So it'd go something like this

Eff that noise, that song would absolutely be on my list. And Cher's "Believe" would be on my "Top 50 Drunken Karaoke / Celebrity Impersonations" list.

I already have questions. For example, let's say a song was released in the '80s, but didn't chart in the States until the '90s. It's still an '80s song, right?
I assume this will all be explained when the new thread happens, but I'm impatient.

Eff that noise, that song would absolutely be on my list. And Cher's "Believe" would be on my "Top 50 Drunken Karaoke / Celebrity Impersonations" list.
I'm not slamming Colvin. I'm just saying that those songs have slipped from the public memory. Say 90s music these days, and people seem to think it was just Nirvana, about 7 years of silence and then Brittany and La Vida Loca. With maybe some Radiohead popping in in the middle.

Every time I see seal I think, he's the nice parent, the one who buys the kids ice cream and takes them fun places, Heidi is the one the kids (and Seal to a certain extent) are scared of.

I saw Seal in concert (before Kiss From A Rose became a big hit but during the tour from that same album). He was really good. I think this was before Kiss was even released as a single cause it was just another album track during this show. The big songs were Crazy, Don't Cry and Prayer For The Dying.
I think I still have the t shirt from that show.

though i was a 90's kid i think i would have to sit out 90's i really dont like anything that was popular then except maybe nirvana. i listened to a lot of weird al and whatever my folks had back then...

I think as long as they charted in the top 40 for any given week, they're fairly memorable. I don't think this list has as much freedom as the guilty pleasure list, with plenty of songs that will appear on many, if not most, lists. There will be some obscure and lesser known in the States tracks, but it's not like we're going to see Ultravox's Vienna running away with the whole thing to the dismay of everyone.
though it totally should...
Funny you should mention that song. I never actually heard it until it was on an '80s compilation I bought in the early '90s.

Quote from: Tripe H. Redux on March 01, 2010, 07:08:36 AM

I was gonna say that The Sun Always Shines On TV was better than both. Maybe we are both right.

*Coldplay Rant*
Personally, I LOVE and ADORE Chris Martin. Listening to his music, albeit not great music, just makes me happy. It's the definition of audible prozac. Something about him and what he does strikes a cord with me. I don't care if you don't like Coldplay, and I think the Coldplay riff in Twilight was AWESOME!
Bella: Do you have to be dead...
Mike: To like Coldplay?
So, go ahead, be a Coldplay hater. I don't care. I love them now, and might possibly always love them.
Also, the only reason I don't loathe Gweneth Paltrow is because Chris Martin seems to think she's ok. Apple and Moses aren't what I would name my kids, but I really have no opinion other than that.
*Coldplay Rant Over*
I have no opinion on Bono
Dear god the 80s song is a bitch for me.. Not that I can think enough, but i can narrow it down with out feeling guilty!
I took my I pod 80s playlist (the condensed version mind you) and narrowed it down from 306 to 145... Good god.
Now to leave Rick Astley on or off.. He'd never give me up, let me down.... well you know.

Nifty. So who do we submit our lists to? Not that mine's nearly done.
I'd love to suggest a topic, but then again an extensive research into Fanfiction would be a must in that I think it would be interesting to see which Fictional character from a given franchise has begotten the most Mary Sue/Marty Stu created children.
Yea, how do we submit our suggestions for next time?
I think we need to wait for a bit for the next list to actually begin. After that they'd go to Im.
I have one I'm thinking of for next time.
