I've found one surprise so far--a tune I thought was an '80s classic in fact peaked in late '79, so it's off the eligibility list.  Farewell, Buggles.

TRIBUTE!!!

Judging from the video the Buggles are to Devo as the Monkees are to the Beatles.  Still like the song though.

If the two people that voted for Top Rifftrax films or shorts had voted for my Riff O'Rama poll instead (which would include iRiffs, Film Crew and Cinematic Titanic offerings with the Rifftrax/Rifftrax Presents films and shorts), we'd have a closer race on our hands.

I've only just recently bought a couple QuipTracks (and have not yet bought any iRiffs, and wouldn't have had ANY of the Cinematic Titanic films on my list, or Film Crew either, but not as averse to them), so that didn't have anything in it that wouldn't have been in a RiffTrax-only selection for me.  Possibly that was the case with others, too.

And for 80's hit songs - what does that mean exactly.  I'd assume Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 anywhere from 1980-1989.  But I wouldn't want to assume anything.

With what I really liked from the 80s, there would only be possibly one or two tunes that could be called "hits".  If it was "favorite music from the 80s", then I could submit a list, but likely no-one else would have the stuff I did on their lists (so my spending time on it would have been a waste of energy).  [Band samples: Brand X, Coulourbox, Al DiMeola, Yello, Wall of Voodoo, Jerry Harrison, Phil Manzanera]

Had it fully registered before I voted, I might've gone for "50 Places You Would Like to Visit Before You Die" (but I likely skipped over it because even making it to two medical appointments a week is too much for me, so I know traveling is out... but there's bunches of places I would've liked to have gone if I could have managed it).

trevor horn and geoff downes are legit.  if you've heard yes' drama and the tour.  not anyone could replace jon anderson and rick wakeman and make it be awesome (i know it was a commercial failure but that doesn't mean it wasn't great!).

These things work best when there's at least some kind of limit on the pool.  I think this one is still fairly broad, however.

i agree we cant just do top songs cause then it will be 50 number ones probably.  so top 40 works.  i like brand X...

I may not have been clear.  I wasn't suggesting that "favorite 80s music" would WORK as an LoC, just that because my taste is so obscure, that my music wouldn't fit into "80s Top 40 Hits", which was why I wouldn't vote for (or participate in) that LoC.

Glad to know someone else here even knows who Brand X WAS.  After the first time I got to see them live I was able to go backstage where I got them all to sign the Moroccan Roll album cover (I'd taken it with me), and then talked to Robin Lumley for about an hour... during which I believe Percy Jones was snorting coke (it was the 80s after all).  WAY cool memory!  Even cooler because a local Chicago station recorded the concert, and aired it, so I had a cassette of the concert (since turned to a CD) in which I can hear myself cheering (I was right up against the stage while they played, close enough for mikes to pick me up out of the crowd).  ;D  During the talk with Lumley, we discussed a book that I later sent them a copy of, and I got a 'thanks' letter from Lumley in response in which he said he'd read it, then "pass it along to the other geezers in the group".  Incredibly rare to get that kind of documentation of such a cool life event.

I had never heard of "Brand X" until you mentioned them, but after reading about them on wiki, it seems like I should have.  They sound pretty cool, and I'll have to check them out.

Don't forget you can also use everyhit.com to look up bands  that may have hit the UK Top 40 during the 80's.  The UK charts were quite different from the US charts (still are really), and you may still be able to find enough to cobble together a list.  Just a suggestion.

I'm starting to have a tough time with this list.  There are just so many songs I want to include.  I keep finding songs that I figured would have no chance to be eligible.  That they actually did make the UK Top 40 singles chart and I could have them if I wanted them..

I might end up with 25 songs that all could be #1 on my list (which is gonna make it that much harder to sort.)

Still, I think my top 3 is pretty much set in stone.  Now the problem is trying to sort the rest of them for maximum benefit.  And just hope that others here share the same taste in artists and their "hit" singles.

Whatever happens, it should be a fun list.  Can't wait to see the outcome.   ;D

(Now watch, celebrity crushes will sneak a come from behind victory.  :P )

Just because some people would not vote for anything other than Rifftrax in the poll, doesn't mean the poll shouldn't be done that way.  It also doesn't mean you should skip the poll if we end up with one.  Quite the opposite.  Having people like you (who would only vote for Rifftrax things because they don't find the other stuff worthy) is exactly what the poll would need to get a fair and representative sampling of the opinions of the forum on this topic.

I would hope that everybody would submit lists, even if they did not want to include iRiffs or the others.  Especially if they did not want to include the others.  That's the only way to get an accurate poll result.

I'm beginning to think we should stick to the yearly charts instead of the weekly. I'm having a hard time figuring much out with the weekly stuff. I can't even find out which REM songs have been in the top 40 (maybe I just don't know how to google right).
I know you are but what am I

Tripe

No look if it was in the charts during that year (rather than just at the end of the year) it'll count.

And Orange Crush (#28 in the UK in 1989)

I'll say it again.  allmusic.com (for the US charts)  everyhit.com (for the UK charts)

On allmusic - just do a search for your artist, when you get to the artist page, click on the tab that says charts & awards, then click on the Billboard singles tab.  It will list all the various Billboard charts that apply, but the only one you will want to look for is Billboard Hot 100.

On everyhit - just do a search for your artist - if they made the UK top 40, it will be listed there.

It's super easy!   ;D

MontyServo

Also a yearly charts only would likely disqualify 95% of the songs already on my list.  So I'd be against that for obvious reasons.

Rattrap007

Have to check, but don't think these cracked the Top 40

MontyServo

Man I wish that second one had charted.  I'd love to have that one on my list (even if it was only at #25.)
