I saw this on a lark last week. I was off work as were a few of my buddies. We managed to get day-passes from our wives and decided that we should just gather up for some NTN trivia and Newcastles at the local BW3. Three hours later and we all realized that we had probably consumed more Newcastles during a weekday afternoon than our wives would be happy with... So with an AMC in the same complex as the bar, we decided that a movie was a good way to work off some buzz. I guess the idea of driving drunk through 200 yards of parking lot seemed more reasonable than driving home. Anyways... as we did our best sorta-stagger into the lobby... Sherlock Holmes was starting in 10 minutes. That was easy.

I generally enjoyed the movie with the exception of one fatal flaw. It was a really, really shitty mystery... I suppose they played some lip service to the deduction/logical abilities of Holmes... but generally it seemed the audience was on the outside looking in... with a bunch of dues ex machina stuff flying around at the end.  A Sherlock Holmes movie with a shitty mystery? That's like watching hotel porn that doesn't show the hoo-haa. Yes, I've admitted my alcohol consumption prior to seeing this... I guess a second viewing is in order to see if the mystery aspects were any less lackluster... but I dunno... that part of the plot seemed half-baked at best.

But anyways, I thought the movie still managed to overcome this pretty noticeable detriment for the most part. If nothing else, it was an enjoyable detective/cop buddy flick thanks to Downey and Law. There were a number of occasions where the CGI slapped you in the face like a dead fish and you wondered why they bothered to include it at all... but the action sequences were generally fun. Downey and Law have some good chemistry and garned a lot of chuckles. I would consider seeing a sequel just based on the two leads. Hopefully they can come up with a better mystery the next time around, but even not, I don't go into an obvious reimaging expecting them not to reimage anything. If this Holmes ends up being a little more action hero and little less awesome detective, then I can live with that if everything else is generally entertaining. I think in this case, it was... hardly a homerun... but this is probably a six or seven stars out of ten type of movie for me. I wasn't overjoyed that I saw it in the theater, but wasn't pissed that I didn't wait for the DVD either.

I've originally said that I thought that the film had a decent bad guy but I've had second thoughts....

I still like the one a bit further south near to 75 though, but BW3 is always fun. :)

Saw the movie for the second time yesterday and I still love it. I'm interested to see who will be cast as Moriarty for the next film. Dear God, don't let it be Brad Pitt, please please please please please........
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

The Asylum's answer to this....

QuoteThe latest Mockbuster from The Asylum will be hot on the heels of the upcoming Sherlock Holmes film. Ben Snyder is Sherlock, Gareth David-Lloyd is Watson, and Dominic Keating from Enterprise is Spring-Heeled Jack. Oh, and the poster promises a Tyrannosaurus, a giant Kraken, and a flame-breathing dragon monster. Just like the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle YOU remember! The plot from the website: "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective faces the ultimate challenge when enormous monsters attack London."  I thought that was just going to be The Hound of the Baskervilles or something until I saw the poster.

"Reimagining"....it's a slippery slope....   :D

Guess what's been added to Watch Instantly on Netflix!    :highfive:

I'm amazed it's not showing on SyFy Channel this weekend.

For some reason, I really want Alfred Molina as Moriarty. I just do.

But he can blow anyone else's acting right out of the water.

I find him rather preposterous usually these days.

He used to be good, now I just find him hard to take seriously.

CrowTeeRobot

Check him out in "The Hoax", if I recall correctly, he was quite good in that.
