Doctor Who?

As someone who has loved the books since I was 10 I just wish this movie was not calling it's self Sherlock Holmes.  It looks like it could be a fun movie but it just doesn't look like Sherlock Holmes and the fact that millions of people now think Sherlock Holmes is like this makes me sad.

Now you know how Alan Moore feels.

And you'd be right, in of itself I suppose it's not bad (a little predictable but fuin enough I suppose) but as a Holmes movie it's complete pants.

The thing is there are properties from the period that would have worked much better with the style, they just aren't as well known as Holmes, Sax Rohmer's work for example.

Actually I'd really like to see a new take on those books.

Only if a white guy plays The Fu.

But, of course, what other sort of actor could possibly do it?

See I was thinking David Henry Hwang could be persuaded to write the script. That'd be all sorts of fun.

aww, but then I'd never get my wish of having an Occidental playing Fu Manchu unless Hwang has gotten over the whole Jonathan Pryce thing.

Oh I'm sure we could convince him somehow, maybe he can make Nayland Smith Asian.

Would Asian Nayland Smith be totally racist against the gweilo in keeping with his literary counterpart's anti-Asian sentiments?

Bingo, think Hwang might go for it? ;)
Yes!  Just as long as he's actually Chinese.  Hollywood has a nasty habit of thinking we're interchangeable.

They are on record that they tried to hire all Japanese for Memoirs....   They couldn't get very many to apply.

Maybe there's too much of a stigma attached or the actresses where too afraid of typecasting.

They still shouldn't have gone with Chinese actresses, after all the best Geisha are played by Koreans:
