"People love Monty Python so much because they've seen the tiny fraction of sketches that don't completely suck."
^^^smart brit friend of mine said that.
Let's see.... how many Monty Python sketches do I love that  I can name off the top of my head? Lumberjack sketch, Guy who's trying to learn to fly sketch, The cheese shop sketch, The other cheese shop sketch, the other other cheese shop sketch, the mattresses sketch, The Fish slapping dance, the Upper-class twit of the year award sketch, the "there's something about larry" cheese shop special director's cut edition sketch, The "Yes man" sketch, The violence in movies sketch, Blackmaiil, The job interview with the chartered accountant who wants to become a lion tamer sketch, the Scottish kamikaze highlanders sketch, Oh you're no fun anymore, The Oscar Wilde Sketch, The Spanish inquisition, Deja Vu, The Atilla the hun show, Bruce, How not to be seen, the exploding version of the blue danube, Confuse-a-cat, Airport Security, The Angelina Jolie show, Dennis Moore, MIster neutron.
Now that makes up at least slightly more than a tiny fraction of Monty Python sketches.

Tell your "Smart" friend to name the un-funny ones....

Doktor Sleepless

Yeah again at the end of the day it's still a sketch show. Thanks for backing me up.

Okay, you want to know how I see the differences between yesterday's comedies and today's comedies? The older comedies are like classic episodes of the Simpsons. The newer comedies are more like new episodes of the Simpsons.

Doktor Sleepless

Yeah again you like an overrated sketch show.

I take it you don't like sketch comedy shows, Doktor Sleepless?

Doktor Sleepless

Not necessarily dislike, but I mean how brilliant do you have to be with comedy to think of. "Alright for tonight let's have Rosey O'donnel as an umpire, if potatoes ruled the world, and I don't know just free ball it at the end with some props from that old Gallagher show." Which really is the best way to sum up majority of sketch shows, especially Monty Python.

Other than the small point that neither Rosie or Gallagher were around when the Pythons first got together. At most, you could say the Pythons borrowed from The Goons and Spike Milligan in general, but they did push the envelope, especially at that time. Of course it seems a bit outdated now, because they were so hugely influential and so many comedians since have (very) liberally borrowed from them.

See I didn't know if anyone would be familiar with The Goons.  :)

Look up in the sky it's a bird, no it's a plane, no it's Literal man! Literally.

Did you mean it metaphorically? Or perhaps

Yeah. My father is a huge anglophile, which, growing up, influenced me a touch.

The point of what I said was that the caricature you painted was rather unfair, regardless of what names you plug in there to replace Rosie and Gallagher.

Doktor Sleepless

Why mention it then, friend? Yeah though,  end of the day sketch shows are what family guy is. Nothing more, nothing less. Sorry, that's how it works.

you know, I recently went to see Spamalot and it was one of the most enjoyable live shows I have ever attended. I'll tell you, the very last thing I think of when I watch Monty Python is "Sketch show". It doesn't matter if it is, it's hella hella funny. They were the first to break the norms of comedy, and they did something creative all the time without kissing their own asses.

Doktor Sleepless

I'll take rehashed and failed points for two hundred alex.
