I personally think the older movies would make better targets and I'd prefer the better targets being made availible than lesser targets that sell better.

I respect your opinion but it's simply not good business.  I'd rather have RiffTrax as it is than not at all.

I know a few people who were disappointed that the B&R rifftrax wasn't being written by Mike, Bill, and Kevin and felt that the fan riffs were hit and miss, but mostly miss. Also something about wasting potential. I don't know, I kinda stop listening to them after a while.

Note: I have no information to prove or disprove what I am about to say.  But I have the sneaking suspicion from speaking with folks at other forums that B&R  may not have sold terribly well. We may have been excited that our riffs were being used, but I heard a number of casual fans gripe about, "Not paying good money to hear fake jokes." Hoefully, I'm wrong and that was just the usual noisy idiots drowning out the satisfied customers. But I get that sinking feeling....

Those who were vocal about their disappointment were really vocal here.   I'm sure there was a section of the fans who decided to hate the track because it was fan written, but might have liked it if we hadn't been told it was fan written ahead of time.  It would be interesting to write a "dark" riff where everyone who wants to participate is given the movie title in secret and they never announce that it's fan written until the end of the actual track itself and see how the feedback goes.  If we really can't write funny material then fine, but if sales and feedback are handicapped just by the fact that we aren't Mike, then that's entirely another story.  How many people do you think were upset when Conor's name was added to the employee section as  "Writer."   I bet a section of the people think that only those doing the riffing are the ones who wrote the whole thing.

I would personally like to thank Bill for stepping in and creating a happy zone.
Way to go Bill!
They should pay you extra for crowd control!

(or at least give you one of those schnazzy "Security" jackets to wear!)

It also helped that the most vocal dissenter left before he got here. :)

For the record, I think that is the first time I have used an emoticon, ever.

In other words, time-shift your purchases (of Rifftrax, DVDs, or both) to 6 months or so after release so that each week you get a newly-turned-6-month-old title and the DVD prices are in-line with what you wish to pay.
If all they do is new releases then your suggestion would have me ignore the entire site for the next 6 months and then start purchasing them one at a time again.

Right. Is that so bad? You would simply have to have patience for 6 months (during which time, realistically speaking, one or more older titles are bound to be released that you could go ahead and pick up) and then after the 6 months you'd be back on a steady stream of titles as long as you limited yourself to one per week or two to keep in sync with new releases (like you already do).

It's like going on a diet. You either have the will to hold back for the greater purpose / gain, or you don't.

Again, the only problem here is impatience.

Oh, come on.   Jump to conclusions much.  They tried the DRM-free thing as an experiment.  I'd prefer that they at least try something to make the older movies a better possibility, then to just continue the way things are going.  If that still doesn't work then they wouldn't have to continue to do it.  But if the experiment works it could be good for business too.  I'm not saying they should run the company into the ground just to riff older movies.  That's ridiculous.

Or you could just rent the movies first, buy later.

Because they haven't tried doing old movies before?

Oh right, they have. And they sell 80% worse.

If there was a way to get more people interested in the older movies, we'd be all set, right? Have any good promotional ideas? I'm trying to think of something. But all I can think of is doing a live show, which they've already done.

Edit: I think I'm going to head over to a friend's place and bounce ideas off of him. See what we can come up with.

That's why I said to do them at an increased price, to see if those willing to purchase them would help support difference in sales.

We're willing to pay more for 3 man riffs, or for longer movies, or for special guest riffers, why not see if we'd pay more for older titles too.  That's what I was talking about.

yeah, but then questions will start to pop up like "Why is this riff 5.99?" or however much it is

So you're hoping the 20% of people who buy the old ones (and I suspect buy most or all of the riffs) will pay a huge mark-up?

That's a shitty way to reward the fans.

Going to San Fransciso repeatedly isn't exactly vast promotion.  And the last 2 live shows were Plan 9 and Over the Top, which had already been made into tracks and not changed that much.  It's pretty hard to promote something that people have already seen.
