If there was a way to get more people interested in the older movies, we'd be all set, right? Have any good promotional ideas? I'm trying to think of something. But all I can think of is doing a live show, which they've already done.

Going to San Fransciso repeatedly isn't exactly vast promotion.  And the last 2 live shows were Plan 9 and Over the Top, which had already been made into tracks and not changed that much.  It's pretty hard to promote something that people have already seen.

Too true. Maybe we could start a thread about this. Get some brain storming going.

One thing I'm interested in is how much a guest star effects the sales.

All most all of the guests have been on older movies.

Does that help?

If I had to guess, I'd say that depends on the movie more than anything. I'd imagine Jurassic Park featuring Weird Al sold very well while Missile to the Moon featuring Fred Willard didn't. Both great comedians and big celebrities, but that extra bit of obscurity may have discouraged a lot of viewers.

So you're hoping the 20% of people who buy the old ones (and I suspect buy most or all of the riffs) will pay a huge mark-up?

That's a shitty way to reward the fans.

I disagree with it being a shitty way to reward the fans.   Apparently 80% of the people wouldn't buy those movies anyway so I'd prefer that the 20% be given the option to at least get trax for those movies, even if it's a higher cost.  It would be like the cost being higher for the On Demand titles from Legend.  People pay $9.99 for the older movie with Mike's commentary.   These titles obviously aren't for everyone and they cost more.  Same principle.

For those who posted before I wrote my lengthy thesis above...

Please see if I addressed your question there, and if not I'll try again.

(If you want your question answered... I can be bribed, you know.  Sell-out, and all.)

Mr. Corbett (Capricorn One)-

I would prefer it if you and your associates (Capricorn One) would bend your efforts more towards fulfilling my personal needs as regards riffable movies (Capricorn One), and less towards such trivialities as "profit", "feasibility", and "reality" (Capricorn One).

That said (Capricorn One), and in all seriousness, I really think the current model flies pretty darned well.  ST Next Gen had a pretty steady formula of a Holodeck episode, then a Data's Head episode, then a Good episode going, and that went for 7 years.  So 1/3 MUST HAVE, 1/3 Will Have, 1/3 "Eh" for RTs seems like a good strong run if the audience is large enough.

Ooooh, could you do ST episodes?  Or has that field been plowed too many times already?  Hmm....

Anyway, thanks for paying attention and taking valuable time away from you next effort! (Capricorn One)

But ENOUGH people AREN'T buying the $9.99 DVDs. That's why they aren't making a lot of those.

Hoefully, I'm wrong and that was just the usual noisy idiots drowning out the satisfied customers.

When has that ever happened?

There's a big difference between Black and White movies that the copyrights have expired on and a cheesy movie from the 80's.  I'm curious how the 80's riffs sales are compared to the $9.99 DVDs.

How many people do you think were upset when Conor's name was added to the employee section as  "Writer."   I bet a section of the people think that only those doing the riffing are the ones who wrote the whole thing.

If so, they kept more quiet about it than the people who wrote to support@rifftrax.com about DisembAudio during the beginning weeks of RiffTrax!

Conor

In all seriousness, I'd be willing to answer your questions as well.  I don't know if you'd rather hear it from Bill or not, but I've been around since day 1 and could shed some light on whatever needs light shedding upon.  Would have to wait til tomorrow to find out some specific data, but if you want, I can help.  Don't want to overstep Bill on the thread though.

Poor, hence they aren't making them.

QuoteBut we do have to keep this operation running, and at present the bigger titles -- and the NEWER titles -- sell way, way better than anything more obscure.   This is true about certain movie genres, too.   And I don't mean a small difference, but 80% less revenue.

The guys REALLY do listen to us. They really DO try to make us happy, look at their track record.

There have been talks about people wishing for more 80s movies for months now, they know we want them, they just don't sell. I don't really see how we can get upset at them for that.

If 20% of us are prepared to buy all rifftrax releases, we have to make up for the 80% difference in sales. So out $3.99 track becomes $19.95.

How many people do you think are going to pay that?!

I sure won't.
