I bought the Simpsons Season 13 on DVD. Sold the Blu Ray version to get it.  Looks the same, cheaper, matches DVDs on shelf.  I'll go Blu when the show is actually in HD (Season 20).

Season 20 is already out on blu if you didn't know. Unless you are waiting for a re-issue with all the bells and whistles...

That was just the poster I found, the DVD I am getting is just the 2D version. I don't have a 3D TV anyway. I have heard that the use of 3D is excellent in this, and it was shot in 3D too, so it's no postconversion. I CAN'T WAIT! New Joe Dante! *squee*

If you are getting the DVD then the 3D would be the colored glasses kind. No 3D tv needed.

I was hoping they would release all the newest seasons fast without all the commentary tracks and then go back in order when they got around to it. I don't think I have ever listened to any of the commentary tracks.

The last DVD I bought was a VHS. A few actually.
"The Supernaturals"
"The Land That Time Forgot"
"LifeForce" and
"The ButterCream Gang"
All I hope to be deliciously awful.

"The ButterCream Gang"

I listen to them at least once each. They're fun, actually.  For awhile I was ripping them off the DVDs and just listening to them on my mp3 player when I did other things, but it would occasionally be annoying when all they do is watch the episode and laugh.

I'll second saying they are just as much fun as the episodes,I would not buy a DvD that didn't have them.  I like that they will explain some of the jokes that reference stuff that came before my time so that people like me can get them.

I will third that.  They have some really surprisingly insightful comments on comedy writing, what production was like (spending four hours on one sign joke was apparently common), and, hey, Conan O'Brien shows up for a couple eps.  Sadly, much like the show, it starts to deteriorate after Season 9 or 10.  I'm trudging my way through Season 13, and it's painfully boring and un-insightful sometimes.

Anyhoo.....

I finally, finally, finally got a blu-ray player!  YAAAAAAAY!!  The same day I just so happen to notice that "Hero" was available in the $8 bin.  It's a strong contender for one of the most beautiful looking movies I've ever seen (imo).  I haven't had a chance to view it yet, but I've read it's not necessarily demo material as far as transfers go.  Still, it's a title that screams artsy eye candy, and I would like nothing less than a blu-ray version.   In fact, I'm-a go demo it right now! ;D

Welcome to Blu ray!  If you marshal arts movies Enter The Dragon is out on Blu Ray and it is cheap too.

I finally, finally, finally got a blu-ray player!  YAAAAAAAY!!

Nice! Congratulations.

So far, my favorite Blu Ray is still probably Close Encounters, and I think that can be had for under $10.  It's the one I've noticed the greatest "jump" in quality on.  If you're not a fan, I guess give it a miss, but I love that movie.
Thanks, Im.  So, the player I got was actually given to me (Sharp Aquos BD-HP20U). It still runs on flash drives for firmware updates. This model has had issues with it (I've noticed) and "Hero" is the only one that won't play (not to mention there's no BD-Live, which means I can't access PIP special features).  Guess I'll hafta wait for a new upgrade.  I enjoy Close Encounters... just not enough to own it.  I've seen parts of fully restored pieces (Doctor Zhivago, Citizen Kane, any animated Disney), and those, to me, seem to have the biggest upgrades.  I hear 2001: A Space Odyssey is surprisingly flawless as well.

I'll say the most surprising thing about upgrading to blu-ray (and I know this is gonna sound like it's from a press kit... but it's true) is the details in actors' faces truly enhances the depths of the actors' performances.  Not only do I feel like I'm watching the movies for the first time, but I feel like a better judge on the movie's acting (whether for good or for bad  :D).

I got one of those the week the format war ended (it was an out of date model even then), there have not been any firmware updates on it for I think 2 years now.  It will not play some discs, including all of the Start Trek remastered season 2 disks.  I replaced it with a panasonic player because of the Star Trek set.  I'm on my 3rd BD player, last upgrade was another panasonic just because I got a 3D TV, extra bonus was getting wi-fi, amazon streaming, and much faster load times.

Agreed on the facial details, it does let you pick up more subtle expressions, especially when you watch on a larger screen.

Yeah, the last firmware was like Oct '09 (and Sharp has stated they discontinued it).  It's funny how they implement firmware updates, yet you fast-forward a couple years and you still need a new player.  Technology is moving so fast, it can't even keep up with itself!  At least all dvds are supposed to play in all dvd players.  And vhs is still great cuz... um...  Well, let's move on.

Or sit really close to a small screen.   ;)

Doctor Who?

What I find strange is that people with newer players have trouble playing stuff but the Blu Ray player I got back in 2007 plays everything I throw at it with out any trouble.

That's why I didn't buy another Sharp player, Sony and Panasonic are still updating firmware on players that old, but the smaller companies pretty much stop shortly after they sell the last unit of a particular model.  That is probably the only advantage of going with a better name brand.

Starman!

I'm working on getting a cheap HDTV and a Blu-Ray player. Anyways, latest DVDs are......
