O - and Serkis is a must for Gollum

Seconded, thirded, and fourthed. Nobody can ever outshine Serkis as Gollum. I could never, ever hear the sound that gollum made in my head when I read the books... and then Serkis came along, and it was like a thunderbolt. He's just... Gollum. Through and through.

Would you go so far as to say he's Gollum "balls to bones"?  Shout out to the Oracle for that one.....keeping it real, ah yeah!

QuoteIan McKellen answered a few fan questions on his official site, including whether he will return to reprise his role as Gandalf in the upcoming "The Hobbit" films.

"Yes I will, if Peter Jackson and I have anything to do with it, he being the producer and me being, on the whole, a very lucky actor," said McKellen. "Encouragingly, Peter and Fran Walsh have told me they couldn't imagine 'The Hobbit' without their original Gandalf. Their confidence hasn't yet been confirmed by the director Guillermo del Toro but I am keeping my diary free for 2009!"

Del Toro has yet to sign on the dotted line, but with so many producers and actors stating that he will be directing "The Hobbit," I'm sure its as good as done.

I'm just wondering if we'll be seeing any characters from Lord of the Rings make cameos in Hobbit, like Elrond or Legolas (It could happen because he's Prince of Mirkwood.) and we know Gollum will be a given. Oh, and Liam Neeson should play Legolas' dad, Elven King of Mirkwood.

QuoteIan McKellen was keen to reprise the part of Gandalf: Jackson had told him, "You must play Gandalf whether I direct or not." Andy Serkis also admitted, "I'd find it very hard to turn down [playing] Gollum again, as he's very much become a part of me." Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen, Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood and Christopher Lee have said they would reprise their roles as Legolas, Aragorn, Galadriel, Frodo Baggins and Saruman if they were required for either prequel. Composer Howard Shore had also said he has thought of some themes for the film.

This one, can rest easy

HELL. YES.

Maybe an Ian Holm cameo at the end as "many years later" Bilbo would be appropriate.

J-Proof

Frank Caliendo should just play all the characters....

Are any of these characters even in the Hobbit, or are they just going to change the script to have Aragorn magically appear? *pop* "Hey, Bilbo. Just thought you should know - don't date rock stars' daughters. KTHXBYE." *pop*

bratpop

That's nonsense. They're just going to pull a pre-sequel out of thin air and crap all over J. R. R. R. R. Tolkein? Who's going to write it, the magic script genie? Let me guess, prior to LOTR, "Strider" was just hanging out in the woods getting stoned. That should be a fun time.

Gosh, maybe someday they'll make a movie from the appendices of Dune about plants. That would be awesome.

Pshaw, there's a whole Tom Bombadil book. What they should do is make a two and a half hour movie about him and advertise it vaguely only saying it's part of the Lord of the Rings mythos.

You're a really pleasant and positive person, and I want to know more about you.

Wait... there's something not quite right about that post....

I thought so! ;)

I disagree with his attitude, but I share his concern.  The whole thing stinks of a corporate cash in.  There is enough material in the Hobbit to make two movies, a pre-sequel writen by a Hollywood writer is a bad idea.  Basing something on background lore is just an excuse to introduce new material.  This "lets tie the stories together so everything fits very well" attitude is one of the things that doomed the Star Wars prequels.

Just my 2c, did my best to be pleasant and positive.
