Guillermo Del Toro will not be directing Harry Potter
QuoteIt has been rumored that Guillermo del Toro might get the chance to direct the last installment in the "Harry Potter" franchise, entitled "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Now children's author Louis Lowry has posted a few comments on her official blog, stating that director David Yates (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) will return to helm the seventh film.

"Bad news from The Giver Movie front. David Yates, the director currently working on the next Harry Potter film, was supposed to begin The Giver film next. But he has just decided he wants to do the final Harry Potter first, thereby postponing The Giver by several years. Maybe the opening of this film could be held simultaneously with my celebration-of-life service after I succumb to old age? Or the producers will decide to get a different director. Stand by. But without holding your breath."

None of this is confirmed yet and there is still plenty of time to pick a director, since the new movie is scheduled to hit theaters in 2010.

Ugh. Yates keeps bringing that composer of his along, and he really sucked the wind out of the room with his Phoenix score.

As far as his directing goes...I haven't noticed any sort of style at all. Cuaron had style, I'll give him that, though his movie was shit.  I say bring back the HP4 guy, who did that one?
Mike Newell and he's going to be directing Prince of Persia: Sands of Time: The Movie.

Mike Newell did 4, but I don't want him back because he directed everybody really weird, none of the characters had any continuity between pictures, and their were plot holes everywhere.

Yates composer is his only drawback, I actually really liked the cinematography of the 5th movie (though not nearly as beautiful as Cuaron's I admit), he seems more of an actor's director in that he brings out the best performances in everybody (the fifth movie was the only one where I actually believed Dan Radcliffe's performance the entire time).

I would be happy with anybody, as long as it isn't Chris Columbus, or Steven Spielberg. I would like to get John Williams back as a composer though, or perhaps James Newton Howard, he does good with these types of movies.

I haven't seen hp5 yet, so I can't judge. However I think it's a bad idea to keep making these movies so cheaply by hiring unknown directors. I also don't see what the hell Chris Columbus is so busy with. When they make the movies cheaply, it cheapens the movies. I know they figure as long as they have the original actors and special FX, that's all they need. But they're wrong.

Also, HP3 is bloody weird since all the actors look at least two years older. WTF happened to Neville over the summer? DId he go on the Subway diet?

Wow, I gotta see Order of the Phoenix just to cleanse my mind of the long hair. And to make matters worse, they actually had Pulp performing as the Weird Sisters. And even THEY had long hair.

QuoteTheOneRing got the chance to speak to director Guillermo del Toro, who revealed that while everyone believes he will go on to helm "The Hobbit" and its sequel, nothing is yet confirmed.

"At this stage anything I say is of no consequence for I am not yet signed to do 'The Hobbit'," he said. "Negotiations advance but are still ongoing."

"The Hobbit," which is a prelude to "The Lord of the Rings," tells the story is of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of exiled dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo, alone and unaided, who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside.

At this point, del Toro is researching both the Hobbit and the rest of the J.R.R. Tolkien library. "All I can say is that I am diligently going through all Tolkien material related to Middle-earth but only as a way of bridging a gap in my reading," he stated. "I still respond the strongest to 'The Hobbit,' but as an avid reader of Mythology I find a lot of his other writings fascinating. A perfect Cosmology forged from very eclectic sources."

Doctor Who?

I love Shire's score.

I have all three of them on CD.

I'm okay with DelToro but my dream Tolkien director is still Ridley Scott.... He's such an exacting director...

However - DelToro made Pans Labrynth which was AWESOME so I'm cool with it (not that that matters lol).

It would appear there's been a long stalemate tho, since the folding of New Line back into Warners. I hope some new "news" surfaces soon.

I would hope they stick with Shore to be honest.

Great, hope you enjoy them. I still want to hear someone else's version.

I don't mind shore's scores at all, they don't instill emotions like James Newton Howard, they aren't awesome like Michael Gaichinno. But they do give the movie a sense that it is an ancient history, and it helps seperate the cultures. If you read the little booklets that come with the Complete Soundtracks you will realize how good Shore really is. (For most of the fellowship score, I can't remember how they put it, but if you look at the notes mathematically, sections of music all have to do with 9. For the nine members of the fellowship)

But since Peter Jackson had creative issues with Howard Shore in King Kong, Peter Jackson changed to James Newton Howard, so we might see him do the score, which I wouldn't mind at all.

Who's this Howard Shore guy? When I think of Lord of the Rings, the only music I think of is Annie Lennox's ACADEMY AWARD WINNING song.... "Song That Apparently Played During The End Credits Of One Of The Lord Of The Rings Movies While People Were Leaving The Theater."

It's a boring song in terms of everyday listening, but it's a good one for the end of the third movie.

I am rereading the Two Towers and am finding myself having a growing curiosity as to why Jackson made Aragorn fall off a cliff while slung to a warg..... Eh whatev' - still my favorite movies ever ;)

Who should play Gandalf if McKellan doesn't return (I say Patrick Stewart)? And who should play Bilbo? And Thorin and the other dwarves?

Cool, cuz he's the best choice for Gandalf. I would like Ian Holmes to return for Bilbo as well, and what's his face for Elrond...
