Also, I'm gonna speculate that the movie will be Howard the Duck

Yes, good call.

The names of images are "timecapsule.jpg".  Perhaps the premise will involve Joel and the others finding a time capsule of bad movies.

Part of the fledgling website talks about "our legacy of movies with commentary"  I think the concept is that they are filling a time capsule of bad movies for future generations.

After we posted that the 'bots are back, you may have asked yourself, "I know what Mike, Kevin, Bill, Jim and Paul are doing, but what about Joel, Trace, Frank, Mary Jo and Josh?" Well, here's your answer...

Cinematic Titanic

So what is Cinematic Titanic? In a nutshell, Joel and the gang have secured the rights to 12 bad, MST-quality films. They will all be writing and performing new riffs, with silhouettes. The plan is to offer downloadable and burnable DVDs through the site -- sort of one-stop shopping.

We're told that while there will be an overall premise to the show, there won't be many "host segments" or the like. And the silhouette won't be of people in theater seats. Instead, it will consist of people up on scaffolding on the side of the screen...as seen in the Cinematic Titanic logo.

The date and title of the first release have yet to be announced, but you can be the first to receive the news by signing up for the Cinematic Titanic newsletter. Just visit http://www.cinematictitanic.com for more information.

That's an interesting wrinkle or two.  The downloadable/burnable dvd angle fascinates me, it'll certainly be better than back when I had to hunt for a new MST3K box set that'd always be sold out (before I just preordered them all) and it's still a different enough concept from how Rifftrax works.  The scaffolding  silhouette seems a little weird, but interesting.  I think the only thing keeping me from jumping up and down for joy now is wondering what a full-length dvd download is going to cost.

The only news that i could get out of Skywalker Ranch, is that they might be screening the new Star Wars cartoon there sometime soon. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the Cinematic Titanic event. But who knows...

I'll keep digging.

I have a feeling the cartoon will be utter crap though.

lmao...

I know I shouldn't pre-judge... but really... Jim got his "big news revelation" kind of stomped on...  :D

Couldn't be any worse than "Max the Hero", though.

Yeah i know what you mean, its tough to wonder the cost of all of this, but i am excited to see that they are trying to make some similarity to the classic silhouette which i always just loved.  I am excited to say the lease! woo!!

I'm wondering what a bunch of DVD downloads are going to cost them in bandwidth.  The Rifftrax are only thirty to forty megs a piece.  How are Joel et al. going to make money hosting a bunch of four gigabyte files?

I know this was touched on way back in the thread, but I felt compelled to say something.

There seems to be this knee jerk reaction to "take sides" already. We're on the day of the announcement and I've already seen the phrases "Rifftrax forever!!!" and "riding on the coattails" in this thread alone. It's disgusting and undeserved. I mean, I understand the feeling to display loyalty to Rifftrax and become a tad defensive, but it leaves me raising an eyebrow a bit. First, some basic ideas which I believe to be true:

1. More is good (Version 1)

Guys, you're now going to be getting more riffing content, supplied by some of the other amazingly talented people which brought us MST3k. They wanna riff. I say let them, and I shall cheer them on wholeheartedly. I'm excited about Joel and Trace getting back into it. I want more riffs, but Mike already works at a breakneck pace. Therefore, having someone else step in to bring me even more riffing content? Yay!

2. More is good (Version 2)

This is the economical version of the same statement. Rifftrax and the Titanic Project produce a rather niche item, a product which every single one of us on this message board have labored to try to explain to someone else who doesn't get the concept at first. The "Riff Industry", as I call it, is a growth market. Therefore, anytime someone endeavors to add to the collective availability of this niche, it adds visibility to the market as a whole and encourages new customers to explore and discover what this is all about. If anything, the Titanic project is a *good* thing for Rifftrax. This isn't Pepsi vs. Coke. There doesn't only have to be one winner.

3. I apparently now live in a world where people wonder if Joel is riding on Mike's coattails.

Does anyone find this silly? I lived through the Joel vs. Mike flamewars of the early internet, which is a weird bizzaro equivalent of serving two tours in Vietnam. If we descend back into that again, I will leave this message board and never come back. Add to the fact that it could also be said that Rifftrax is riding on the coattails of MST3k, which is riding on the coattails of Rocky Horror, which is riding on the coattails of your mom. Rifftrax ain't the first to market, folks. Deal with it, pinkboy.

4. Competition is good.

In a healthy capitalistic society, two competing entities earn market share by attempting to become more innovative and offering better content, and more of it, at a better price.  When there is no competition, there is no drive to innovate. Now, I will never accuse Rifftrax of not trying hard, as I have been more excited than anyone about the developments of the DIY website, the Rifftrax DVD player, and the ability to get more use out of my DVD collection. Furthermore, Rifftrax is not exactly operating in a vacuum -- they are competing with thousands of sources of entertainment to earn your 3-4 dollars every time they release a new track. But having a new entry into the "Riff Race" places an immediate need on Rifftrax to say to themselves, "Are we doing everything we can to make sure we're releasing the best product possible?" Anytime Rifftrax feels the need to try a bit harder, the consumers of their product win.

Anyways, that's my thoughts, and I'm sure I could go on a bit more. But that's all for now. Please, let's not have this descend into some debate over which is better or "staying loyal". I for one welcome our new MST3k overlords.
